Hi, this chapter took me longer than I thought, but I?m really happy with the result.

Special thanks to Midge-14, Aristale Wolf, SerenityDeath, and everyone who has posted comments, I?m so glad you like the story so far. I tried to avoid making you wait too long, I apologize if you were on the verge of suicide or about to offer a reward for my head.

Well, this chapter starts with an introduction of some events after the breakup, and then continues to one month later (5 months before the wedding). Hope you like it, and, like always, please post your comments. Enjoy!

Chapter III


After breaking up with Relena, Heero left her room and went straight to the nearest spaceport, he got on a shuttle, sure that there would be men sent by that Neil Hunter to make sure he got on. The shuttle left, but Heero was not in it. He followed those men instead and located Neil Hunter?s house. After installing some cameras, he went back to Relena?s mansion. He wanted to see her again. He would never forget the sadness in her eyes, the way she cried in front of him, and how sick he felt knowing he had caused it.

Looking up from under her balcony, he noticed her bedside lamp had to be on, since there was a glimpse of light in the room. He looked at his watch and felt guilty. It was 3:13 and she hadn?t gone to sleep. He though about her probably crying and sobbing and he felt so much pain in his chest. He knew he had other possibilities, like telling her the truth and convince her to pretend they were over, but he wasn?t sure if Hunter?s men had installed some kind of surveillance; besides, he didn?t want to risk this guy to doubt they were over, they had to be convincing, and the best way to assure that was doing it for real. He chose to leave her alone, not sure what he would do if he saw her crying again, he had almost gave in a few hours ago to the urge to hold her and tell her he loved her.

On the next morning, Duo entered Relena?s office hoping the news he had just gotten were false. As soon as he laid eyes on her he realized it was all true, Heero had left.

?Good morning, Duo.? Relena tried to fake a smile, but it was useless. Even if she accomplished it her eyes couldn?t lie. She felt tired and drained after the long hours spent crying her heart out and not sleeping at all.

?By the way you look, I?m afraid it?s true what I just heard. Did he say when he?d be back??. He sat in one of the leather chairs in front of her desk and waited for her answer. He then noticed she looked too pale and her eyes looked tired and red.

?I don?t want to talk about him, Duo?. She hid her face from him, bringing her arms up in front of her face. She lowered her head, and her hair created a curtain to hide herself.

Duo stood up and walked around her desk. He tried to bring her face up, but she didn?t want to face him. She finally gave in, and instead of revealing a sad, crying face, he saw she was angry. ?What did he do??.

She took a moment to calm herself, and then told him everything that happened. He listened closely to all the detail she gave him, from the cold tones he had used, to the way he had pushed her. At the end of the conversation his arms were around her calming her anger, and his own anger was starting to arise. He was certain Heero loved her, but he couldn?t explain why he had done that to her. He assigned himself the task to find out the truth behind Heero?s actions and bring that shithead back to Relena. His thoughts were interrupted by her irritated voice though.

?Duo, let go, you?re squeezing too tight!?.

Duo backed and looked at her apologetically. She seemed very irritated, so he wanted to assure her everything would go back to normal.

?Don?t worry, Relena. I will find that stupid boy and bring him back to you. I promise?, he smiled at her and started walking to the door.

?No?. Her voice was low, but he managed to hear her. He turned around and saw her fists clenched, dark eyes full of determination, and looking at something she could only see, apparently not focusing her sight at something in particular. She looked hurt, and he could understand her. Heero had treated her awfully, and he couldn?t imagine how she had to be feeling.

?What do you mean, Lena??, he said calmly.

?It is over?

?Relena, come on. We both know him, he would never do something like this unless??

?No! I don?t want to hear about it, Duo. Nothing you say to defend him will erase the way he treated me. He looked at me like I was nothing, and he was determined to end things with me. If he was that determined, what makes you think he will change his mind??

?Relena, you can?t give up on him, he probably had good reasons to do that. He was probably trying to protect you from something, you know he has enemies?. He walked to her and cupped her face with her hands, but she quickly moved away. She was as stubborn as him, he thought.

?If he was trying to protect me, he would have told me the truth. He was only making stupid excuses to break up with me. I was so stupid to believe in him and to let myself plan my future with him. I know you are trying to help, Duo, but you weren?t there, you didn?t saw his eyes nor the way he??. She stopped herself suddenly, knowing she was loosing her patience. She was talking way too loud and was sure her secretary, if not the entire staff, had their faces glued to her door. She decided to sit down and clam down. Duo joined her immediately and took her hand.

?Lena, I understand your anger, and I?ll stop bothering you, but just promise me you will think about what I said. I?m sure he will come back to you?.

She looked at him sweetly and hugged him tightly. He smiled at her and kissed her forehead. When he looked at her again, he knew she was about to say something he wouldn?t like, she still eyed at him sweetly, but she wasn?t smiling.

?You have so much hope in him, but it?s time I stop giving him chances to hurt me. Maybe you?re right, maybe he just wanted to protect me, but if he doesn?t trust me enough to tell me the truth, what ensures me he won?t do it again. Duo, it?s time I move on, or he will continue breaking my heart?.

5 months before

?You have got to be kidding! How did you get these tickets? I heard they were sold out months ago?, a very excited Relena said at the sight of two front row tickets to the premier of her favorite ballet, The Nutcracker. She knew she had seen it hundreds of times, but it was her favorite. She hugged the man across the table and then kissed him lovingly.

?You are welcome, it wasn?t that hard to get them, I just mentioned your name. I just wonder, why do you like it so much??

They continued eating as she happily answered his question. ?Well, my parents were always away, I barely saw them. My dad always traveled and my mother had all these clubs she belonged to, but every Christmas we all went to see The Nutcracker. It was one of the few times we spent together as a family, so I guess it reminds me of them?.

He took her hand in his and gently kissed it. She smiled at him and continued eating.

?Well, I?m glad it was a good surprise. It always makes me so happy to see you smile like this. How about if we go out for dinner before the show?.?

Relena just couldn?t stop smiling. ?That sounds great.?

?Anything new??, asked Heero. Taylor had been doing a good job so far; the cameras he had installed a month earlier had confirmed what he had told him, this Neil Hunter was crazy for Relena, and not in a good way. He was obsessed, which didn?t eased his mind knowing he was currently dating her.

Taylor waited a moment to answer Heero, he was always so afraid he would be caught, so he hid in quite interesting places. Heero watched him trough the cameras and saw him hide in the upper level of the library.

?Okay, it is safe to talk?, Taylor answered. If Heero had a sense of humor, something he seemed to had lost since the breakup, he would have laughed. Taylor was taking his role too seriously.

?How many times do I have to tell you I only contact you when I?m certain you are alone! You don?t need to hide?, Heero spat angrily, this was the fourth time he had this conversation with him.

?I?m sorry. Anyway, I?ve done some research on the ?thing? you mentioned on our last call. Mr. Hunter has made a lot of transactions lately. He has opened a mayor bank account, and every three days he makes deposits. Also, he has recently bought a castle in France and it is renovating it. He has mentioned he is planning to make it a museum to honor the soldiers of the war. He is also hiring a lot of staff lately, mainly cooks and maids, but he hasn?t mentioned anything about it. Other than that, nothing else has stood out.?

?Well done, try to get him to tell you why he is hiring staff and talk to the ones he has already hired. Find out their names and some extra information you might find. Have them ready for next week?.

With that, the call ended.

?So, Relena. I?ve been wanting to call you ever since I saw the paper two weeks ago. How is Neil??

Relena rolled her eyes, Dorothy was very obnoxious sometimes. ?He is fine. We?re going to see The Nutcracker next week. How about you? You got any Christmas plans??. She suppressed a yawn. She really didn?t care if she had plans or not.

?Well, I was actually thinking on spending the holidays on Earth. Maybe we could have lunch next week?.

Relena really hated Dorothy?s tone. She made it seem like she was asking, but in fact she was demanding. Relena couldn?t understand how she always accepted her demands.

?That sounds good, Dorothy. We hadn?t seen each other in quite a while?. Thank God for that, she thought.

?Great! I?ll call you to discuss the day and place. Oh, and don?t forget to invite Neil. I?m dying to meet him. Bye!?

Relena slammed the auricular after hearing her chuckle. She was not only obnoxious, she was evil.

I agree with Midge-14 whole heartedily.....and just so you know I just about did put out a reward for your head.....I was starting to get anxious on ever reading any more of this....You're killing me very slowly!! I can't wait to read the part where Duo's interigating Heero about what happened....That's bound to be hilarious.... Hope it's soon!!
