Winry remembered "that day" ever so vividly. The sun was shining, the sky was blue, but she was tiptoing around the house scared even before he came.

Naturally, when she heard the pounding on the door and the sudden slam and shout of her grandmoter downstairs, she became terrified. Turning around, she could see that Al and Ed had already gone downstairs. Eyes wide and tearful, she dashed after them, but it was too late. That man had already started speaking to them.

Had he come to take them from her?

Slowly, ever so slowly she opened the door that lead to the main room of the house. The first person she saw was her grandmother, stern, ever mindful. Even though the old woman hadn't looked at her, the little girl knew that her presence was acknowledged. Her blue eyes travelled across the table to see Ed, head bowed, and behind him Al, large and looming, a hulking metal suit of armor now, and then, there he was. Winry recognized the uniform of the soldiers--how could she not?--and the first emotion she felt was hate.

What? Had the military not been satisfied with the deaths of her parents? Do they have to come for her closest friends too? Her only other family in the world...

But upon closer look at this man, she couldn't help but be captivated. Even at the tender age of 11 she could feel herself blushing to her roots when her eyes travelled to his chiseled face and his intense, intelligent eyes. They were so old for one so young.. They were just like Ed's.

Winry backed away knowing that Ed would probably go with that man. They were so alike. Maybe he could help him. Maybe he could keep Ed safe. If she could just help Ed to get to him again, maybe he would even give notice to her.

Why not? she thought. It could be her Equivalent Exchange.
