Chapter 10: The Homecoming

Jeremy and Relena were waiting. Apparently, Trowa had arranged for Duo and Hilde to pick them up and take them home. Them, assuming Jeremy also lived nearby. She assumed he must if he worked for the Preventers, however he never really seemed to give her a straight answer about any of her questions. She had been disappointed at first that it was Duo and Hilde, not Heero, but then again, she wasn?t sure if she was ready to face him yet.

Relena spotted Duo first. His long braid hung out from his black cap, swinging as he walked. Hilde literally bounced as she walked by his side, a grin from ear to ear. They looked like they were having a lively conversation about something. Relena was glad that she would soon be with her friends; Jeremy hadn't been very talkative.

Hilde saw Relena first and happily screamed. She jumped up and ran the rest of the distance between them, attacking Relena with a hug.

"Relena! I'm so glad you're back! I've missed you so much. I have so much to talk to you about! Guess what happened while you were..."

"Hilde," Duo laughed, prying the brunette from her friend, "Let Relena breathe a little first!" He then turned his attention to Relena. "Hey 'Lena!"

Relena switched her attention between the two of them, a grin spreading from ear to ear. "Its so good to see you both, too."

"Come on, we better get you home before you brother send out a search team," Duo said, stretching slightly, "Hilde can fill you in while we go home. Duo then turned to Jeremy and reached his hand out. "Name's Duo, thanks for taking care of Relena for us."

"Jeremy," he said, meeting Duo's gaze and shaking his hand.

The four climbed into the car and made their way home.

Relena waited until the staff had left for the night and the streets were dark before she decided to venture to the office. It had been a hard day, facing the mired of questions that awaited her return. Why did she leave? Was she okay?

She knew that the people who asked these questions cared about her and meant well, but all the same, it took a lot of patience to individually entertain everyone's questions at the house. It was so hard to explain her disappearance and the questions about Hugh. The office, she knew, would be no better, not to mention the stacks of work that awaited her.

She quickly unlocked the door to the building and slipped inside, carefully making sure that she locked the door back. Flicking on the lights, she found the office was just as she remembered leaving it. The coffee pot, as usually, had not been cleaned from today's use. Stacks of paper waiting to be filed were on her secretary's desk. She sighed seeing this, realizing that her crew had been able to weather their storms without her, just as they were suppose to.

The Preventers had always stressed the importance of every person in Relena's office being reliable and trustworthy. It was imperative that if something were to happen to Relena, especially in the early days when trust was so very fragile between Earth and the Colonies, that the office could hide this fact for at least a while. This would give the Preventers several days to decide what course of action to take.

Rounding the corner, she approached her office. The door was shut, but a small amount of light shined underneath the door. Cautiously, Relena opened the door.

"I see you've made it here," a deep voice said. The man stood with this greeting and placed his hands on the desk, leaning slightly. The light hit his chest, hiding his face and masking his identity, if it were not for a few identifiable long strands of light blonde hair that were caught along his sides.

"Millardo, its good to see you," Relena said, moving to hug her brother.

Millardo hugged her then motioned for her to sit, to which she complied. He than began pacing around the room, as if searching for what he wanted to say.

"Relena, first of all, are you okay?"

"Yes. I was well taken care of."

"Good," he said stopping, then paused for a moment, sighed, and began pacing again. "I see you have a cut on your head."

"Yes," she sighed, trying to explain, "I hit my head and went unconscious. Hugh...a man in a boat, found me and took care of me. He's the reason I'm alive."

Millardo stopped and looked at her, considering her answer.

"Why did you leave?" He stated, stopping directly in front of her to watch her answer this question. When she hesitated, he looked square into her eyes, demanding an answer.

"I was upset."

"About what?"

"It's nothing now."

"Something about the Terra Formation Project?"

"No."

"Work?"

"No."

"Heero?"

"No."

"Damn it Relena!? Millardo said sternly, slamming his fists down on the desk. ?You don't just leave without a reason. I may have been gone for several of the past few years of your life, but I KNOW you. I know you wouldn't leave for anything that had to do with work. You would throw yourself into any situation if you thought it would help, no matter the consequence to your life. So really, Relena, really it only leaves one option -Heero. Now tell me what happened. All of it. Including Hugh."

Relena sighed and took a deep breath, ready to tell her brother the edited version of what happened. It was going to be a long night?.

Relena: Jeremy, you sure have pretty blue eyes.
Jeremy: ....
Relena: Do you have a girlfriend?
Jeremy: I thought we covered this.
Relena: I totally ditched Hugh, wanna make out?
Jeremy: O_O Relena!
