As I watch you move
Across the moonlit room
There's so much tenderness in your loving
The way she breathed his name never failed to mesmerize him. Coming from those full, tempting lips, it sounded like a prayer to his ears. How could one simple word convey such gentleness?
He never took his eyes away from her the moment he stepped into her room. She was staring out her window, watching the star-studded night sky.
She turned to him, her honeyblonde hair rippling in the moonlight.
"Relena." He said in his quiet monotone, his eyes glinting with a myriad of emotions that always took her breath away. She smiled serenely. He was here.
"Heero." Again, that lilting tenderness. It washed over him, calming the raging emotions beneath his emotionless exterior.
He was so near. She held out her arms to him, and he stepped into heaven.
He held her like this every night, away from everyone's prying eyes. The dusk was theirs, theirs alone, and no one was allowed to breach that sacred ritual.
His eyes drifted shut, and his hold on her tightened, nearly crushing her to him, as if the embrace would merge their bodies together and fuse them for all eternity.
She lifted her face to him. Sky blue eyes gazed into Prussian blue ones. She did not say anything, her gaze searching, understanding.
She smiled sadly, and lovingly caressed his cheek. A bit of the sorrow he was feeling showed through his eyes, and he dropped a loving kiss on her forehead.
She closed her eyes, willing the gathering tears to go away. She will be strong for him. She will weep when he has left her side. But now...
"When will you be leaving?" She asked in a quiet, resigned whisper.
It almost wrenched his heart to say the next words. "Tomorrow morning. Lady Une needed to assign all of us in this. I will be gone by the time you wake up."
Tomorrow I must leave
The dawn knows no reprieve
God give me strength when I am leaving
He had to clench his fists tightly when he was called to Lady Une's office. It took all of his willpower to grate out "Mission Accepted", the other pilots looked at him in concern. All he ever wanted was to say "Mission Denied".
So raise your hands to heaven and pray
That we'll be back together someday
"I see." She replied in quiet acceptance. She knew better than to try and stop him. He would never be deterred from his task, even if it meant his death. All she could do is pray for his safety, and his immediate return.
"Relena." He said her name like a plea. She smiled at him bravely. Stepping away from him slightly, she gently tugged on his hand, and led him to her bed.
They sat down, and once again moved into each other's arms. She leaned into his chest and closed her eyes, and smiled again when she felt him lay his head on top of hers.
He wanted to stay in her arms forever. She was all that kept him sane and alive, it was her light that beckoned him out of his darkness.
And yet, it was for her that he would turn away and leave for these missions. There was nothing he would not do for her, for her safety.
She was all he ever had.
Tonight I need your sweet caress
Hold me in the darkness
Tonight you calm my restlessness
You relieve my sadness
As we move to embrace
Tears run down your face
I whisper words of love so softly
I can't belive this pain
It's driving me insane
Without your touch life will be lonely
She never showed him the tears she wept whenever he left her. She tried so hard to be strong for him. His heart ached at the fragile yet strong woman he held in his arms. His solace, his strength, his home.
His love, his mate.
His Relena.
"I love you Relena. Always remember that."
She looked up at him, her eyes shining bright. She gave him the smile that was only meant for him.
"I love you too, Heero. Forever."
He managed a smile at that. "I know."
A peaceful slumber cocooned the young lovers from the loneliness the morning will bring.
* * *
Each step was harder than the last. He had to go. He had to. For her.
Morning has come, another day
I must pack my bags and say goodbye
Goodbye
"Heero."
His steps halted. He could not look at her, lest his resolve would crumble, and he would stay with her.
She stood in front of him. Reaching up, she clasped his face close to hers. So close, he could breathe in her lavender scent.
"This is not goodbye. Never goodbye, Heero." She breathed, before leaning in for a soul-searing kiss. He wrapped his arms around her tightly, branding himself with her warmth, and she gave herself up to the sheer intensity of it all.
"Never goodbye, Relena." He said hoarsely as he looked her in the eyes. "Because I will protect you. Always. Mine." He kissed her hands.
And then he was gone, he did not look back, but raised a hand to acknowledge her parting gaze.
She smiled.
"I will wait for you."
