Chapter 3: Fenrir, The Beast of the Earth
Andrew stood in the center of a great hall. The hall was magnificently decorated with stone pillars and red drapes strung between them. The room was just slightly high enough that the ceiling couldn?t be seen. The floor seemed to be made out of a blue marble. Andrew looked around and found nine doors, three on his left, three straight in front of him, and three to his right. Well I can stand here all day and do nothing or I can go through a door.
Moving with slight hesitation, Andrew looked at the doorknob of the door directly in front of him. It was made of pure gold, yet was somehow not malleable and was shaped into the face of an aged dragon. The door, though, was thoroughly shut. Andrew pulled on the door a little bit before moving to his left. The doorknob on this door was made out of a black material that seemed to collect all of the light around it. It was carved into the shape of a black widow spider but instead of a red mark on its back, a white splotch was in place. When Andrew studied the white mark, though, it disappeared all together. Much like the last one, and to Andrew?s annoyance, this door was also locked. Well if all of them are locked I might as well sit here. Maybe if I stare at one door long enough it will open for me. But let?s try at least two more before I decide that. The next door Andrew tried was to the right of the first. The doorknob, as the other two doors, was carved. It appeared to be made out of a white material that radiated light strong enough to light the room if it had been dark. Andrew?s eyes squinted as if trying to look through the glow. The material of the doorknob was in the shape of another black widow, this one with a black mark that also disappeared when he inspected it. To Andrew?s dismay this door was also sealed.
Six more doors. Which one is the one that?s unlocked? Luck is the best way to go from here, I guess. He closed his eyes and stuck his finger out deciding that when he opened his eyes, that was the door to go through. He walked along the room for a minute and then opened his eyes. His finger was pointed at a door with a handle that was made of a beautiful emerald. Closing the distance between the door and himself, and inspected the doorknob and found that it was sculpted to show a mountain range. Before he grasped the handle of the door he looked around at the other handles. Each was a different stone and carved in a different pattern. Sapphire, diamond, ruby, opal, and a topaz. Well at least they know their colors. He took the green stone in hand and twisted. The door swung in soundlessly.
?Welcome, it has been a long time since you have come here, Nathan.? Andrew couldn?t tell where the voice was coming from, but the words had a calming effect. He took a step into the room to find the speaker. The door swung shut behind him and with a sudden jolt the whole world shook. The area took on a new look and the door promptly disappeared into thin air. He now stood at the entrance to a cave in the middle of a forest. ?You look surprised to hear my voice after all these years. What has happened to you that I could surprise the unshakable??
Surprised that?s something I?ve never felt before. This is??new.
?Who are you? And what is this place that things disappear and all other paths are blocked? Why did you call me Nathan??
?Memory, that is it, you have no memory, and something else. I cannot define what else you are missing, but I know for sure it blocks your power and produces your amnesia. Well if there is ever a time that you need me it is now. I know how your other weapons feel about how you left us, I still remain in the fact that you had your reasons and that I should respect that of you.?
?Need you? But I have no clue who you even are, how would I need you? I was in school just a few minutes ago. Nothing is going to happen to me.?
?Well then, you sound confident. That is not unlike you though, so I will disregard that last statement.? Andrew noticed that the voice seemed to have a growl in it this time and that it was deeper then most people?s.
?I must ask again, who are you? And what is this place?? When the voice didn?t respond at first, Andrew began to look around him incase there was an exit he had missed on the first pass. When he saw nothing, he turned back towards the cave.
?This place is were you used to talk to Us when you needed us for help or advice.? The voice was patient, but carried hints of annoyance at the question that Andrew didn?t seem to pick up.
?Us, who do you mean by Us? And you still didn?t answer my first question??
?By Us I mean the swords of Swisswahelion Onishi. We are your greatest allies and at the same time your worst enemies.? The voice swelled louder as it spoke.
?Well, um, I think I?ll leave then you sound like a busy, uh, person. I?ll just be going then.? He turned to go but found himself paralyzed.
?This place is in your mind, Nathan. You can?t even leave without my help at the moment. I wouldn?t leave. Well, I guess since you don?t remember I better show you who I am then.? From behind him, Andrew could hear what was unmistakable as a large body getting up off the ground. Again finding himself paralyzed, he could only turn slowly around to face the person. Shit, what the hell is that thing. Out of the cave had walked what was unmistakably a wolf, but the creature was almost three times the size of Andrew. It?s fir was the color of a fresh dusting of snow in winter and it?s eye?s glowed a the same green as the emerald of the doorknob.
?Stop, thinking that I am a unic, Nathan. You should know better by now.?
Did it read my mind or was it spelled out on my face.
?If you think I can read minds, then you are incorrect. However, in this place, that is your mind, the trees here will do things that can tell me what your thinking and how you will act. Although you seem surprised that I am a monster, you possess no fear to say that I am dangerous. Just as well, you can now tell that I am male. Although that fact doesn?t really matter.?
?What are you?? I?ve never seen anything like him, but I must say that even though I feel in danger, I can?t help but admit that he is beautiful.
?Well the easiest way to explain what I am is to tell you my name. I am Fenrir, the Beast of the Earth. I was once a demon, but I met a man that changed that. Now I am a sword that people with power may use. I am one of a set of nine swords. All of the swords have a different power to control. All are connected and yet all are different. Only our creator could control us all. No one else, be it human, elf, dwarf, or any other species you can think of, has ever been able to control more then one of that set of swords. That is to say almost no one. A man that was more then just a man, fore he never told Us what he really was, was the only person that could control not only two of Us, but all nine. While parts are missing, you are unmistakably that man. I sense that you will be in some sort of danger in the near future. For this I will travel from my current location and be there to help you in the future.?
?That helps? I think, but it still doesn?t explain to me how I will be in danger shortly.?
?I cannot explain that now. I must send you back to the world of your friends. Goodbye and remember that my name is Fenrir. You will need it in the future.?
-----------------
Pain shot through Andrew?s body as he sat bolt up right and words resonated through his mind. I?m sorry for the pain and I am Fenrir. Then everything went cold and Andrew heard himself scream.
