What I Can Offer


Thursday night found Hatake Kakashi at the Konoha Tavern in the midst of a three day drunken stupor. He?d spent the day up visiting the burial grounds of Konoha?s fallen, and had barely managed to shuffle his way back to the barstool that he?d seemingly taken permanent residence upon. The age old custom had yet to fail. His mind although misty from the two bottles of Sake before him; spun like a pinwheel on a summer?s day, whirling round in various vivid memories.

Obito?s final gift the Sharigan, a cascade of fluorescent pink, and a quiet voice laced with sweet dejection. Eyes like emeralds trained on him emptily, blood stained hands. A retreating back; softly spoken parting words. Giving no heed to the small cup used for drinking, Kakashi snatched up a half empty Sake bottle and took a long guzzle from its neck. The cool liquid ran down his chin in places due to a clumsiness not his own, and dripped onto his Jounin vest.

Strange Chakra flowed through the room unexpectedly, silencing the Tavern at once with its presence. A flash of red drew Kakashi?s lazy gaze to the bar stool next to his, and an ounce of recognition went through his mind; prompting him to acknowledge the traveler in a slow tone.

?Welcome, Gaara of sand.?

A ripple of murmuring went through the Tavern. The Chuunin exams hadn?t been forgotten.

?What Business do you have here in Konoha?? Kakashi asked the sullen looking young man idly.

Gaara?s pale green eyes flickered to his face briefly before turning back to stare blankly ahead.

?My business is my own.?

Kakashi took another swig from his sake, deciding to leave the youth alone.

?Jus tell me if ya need anything.?

Gaara?s murmurings were lost to his ears when Kakashi raised the Sake bottle to his lips once more and gulped the drink down.

The next think Kakashi knew he was blinking his eyes owlishly as if he?d been sleeping and Rock Lee was suddenly in Gaara?s very personal space demanding to know what his business in Konoha was.
?As I told the old man, my business is my own? Gaara was saying languidly.
Lee?s jaw clenched, his fists balled.
?I?m a Jounin here Gaara, Konoha is my Business? he said crisply, struggling to keep his voice calm.
?Amazing? was Gaara?s quiet response.

?What?s that supposed to mean?? Lee asked through his teeth.

Kakashi stood quietly swaying a little on his feet, and smiled through his mask at Lee.

?Now Lee must there be a confrontation tonight? How about I buy you a drink, sooths the nerves you know? he told him good naturedly.

?It amazes me that a weakling such as yourself has been able to even struggle to Jounin rank? Gaara explained calmly.

Lee?s face drained of its color and he shook with fury.
?We?ll just see how weak I am Gaara; I challenge you to a match!? Lee roared.

With a smirk Gaara stood from his seat and shrugged.
?If you want a repeat of the Chuunin exams I will gladly compensate you? he chuckled.

The Tavern which had been deadly quiet since Gaara?s arrival broke out in anxious murmurs, making Gaara?s smirk grow.

?Come then Lee lets settle this once and for all, and let?s be quick.?

?Gaara?..?

The room grew silent once more. All heads turned to the Taverns entrance; Lee?s eyes grew to the size of saucers, Gaara?s shoulders stiffened. Kakashi was immediately sobered. Standing at the entrance clothed in loose cargo pants and a long sleeved t-shirt was Haruno Sakura.
