All I Can't Have
Chapter 3
Relena moved about her room in a state of undress, thinking and trying to find the perfect thing to wear. She usually wasn?t nervous in anything, but she had to look good tonight, although she wasn?t really sure why. She had tried on jeans, skirts, dresses, tanks, suits, and currently, if she were to go out in what she was wearing at that moment, she would be strutting the streets in a bra, panties, tights, and a pair of dark brown stilettos.
Cringing, she knew who she would have called a week ago if she faced the same problem? but there was no way in hell Relena was going to call Cass now. And besides, she growled to herself, they are probably still out.
Relena sat back on her bed, analyzing what is was she was doing. She was about to go out with the President of the L colony while Heero dated her secretary. Relena shook this from her head forcefully and stood up to pick out her outfit. ?Screw him,? she muttered, unsure whether she was referring to Heero or James.
Heero drove back to the mansion, having just dropped Cass of. Heero sat in the car for a moment, staring up at Relena?s lit window. Every now and then her dark shape would pass by, she was pacing. He could almost see her, walking around, her hand on her chin; the stock Relena expression of thought.
Despite himself, it was her that he had thought of the entire day. That smile, that skirt, that blouse?shit. Heero forced himself from the car and started heading up towards the mansion. He hoped she wouldn?t bother him about Cass, and yet he also hoped that she did. There she was in his mind again, smiling and leaning back, her skirt much to high?. shit!
Relena finally exited her room and was heading out the front door when Heero opened it to come in. As all there other encounters, this one began by the several minute silence. Relena saw his eyes go over her, although no reaction showed on her face. She had finally decided to wear a small, classy red dress; thin red straps, the dress slinky and fitted to her body, billowing out a bit as it comes to a stop at her knees. Upon her feet she wore strapped stilettos, her toes a pearl white.
Relena was the first to move. Pushing back a strand of stray hair that hung down from her regal updo, she moved past Heero, but he stopped her with a look.
?Where are you going, Miss Darlian?? he asked, his voice emotionless.
Relena flicked her gaze up at him, her shoulder nearly touching his as she passed him and went out the door. ?On a date,?
Relena was met by James at the door and she blanched. His blonde hair styled in a boyish manner, his dark suit bringing out his oh-so-blue eyes, Relena couldn?t believe a President of a colony could be this?dashing. As she moved towards him, his eyes on hers, another pair of eyes flashed across her mind. Darker, touching something inside her?
?Relena Darlian, my God. You are a vision!? James said as he took her hand to kiss it, breaking Relena from her thoughts.
Relena smiled and put her arm through his. ?Thank you. So, before you screaming fan club attacks, I think we should head inside,?
?Touché’”
They headed inside the lush, velvet, and oddly empty restaurant, called a name which even Relena couldn?t pronounce. James held out a chair for her, they ordered wine and food, and setting his chin upon his hands his eyes questioned her. Relena smiled back.
?So, Miss Relena, care to tell me a little about yourself??
Relena gave him a light shrug. ?What is there to tell? Born a Peacecraft, as everyone is well aware, I was, I suppose, royalty for a little while. After the Revolution, or the War-I don?t want to offend, I decided to follow not my birth father, whose teachings I respect and believe, but of my adopted father. The father that was?everything to me. Now here I sit, Vice Foreign Minister of the Earth Sphere- ambassador to the colonies. And?well, now I am on a date with a colonial President which is probably going to be seen as entangling relations by my colleges.? she laughed. So did James.
?I should hope not. You just might be this century?s Helen of Troy, Miss Darlian,?
?I should hope not!?
Laugh. Laugh. Food and wine is served, chatter here and there?
?Your turn,? Relena said, taking a glass in her hand. James filled it.
?What??
?Tell me a little about yourself. Surely all that is said in the tabloids isn?t true, is it?? she teased as she took a drink. Somewhere inside her she felt? guilt. But before she could look into it more deeply, James jumped into her consciousness with an immediate burst of chatter.
?No! I promise you, I have no unclaimed, or claimed, children running about. I am not secretly married to Stara Jones, space?s favorite pop star, and I do not own a corporation which mass produces secret weapons for the destruction of the universe. Although I will admit that I didn?t try and squash that Stara Jones one as much as I did the others. Ow! No hitting! Let?s see, my past. Born the son of a circus man, I wandered off from home at 14 to be taken in by a rich old widow. I loved her dearly, it was her that got me sent to good schools and such. So, entering the 2nd grade at the age of 16, I saw the mayor of the city I had grown up in kick a homeless child out of his way. It was then that I knew I had to change things. So, several years and years of college and political turmoil later, here I am!?
?Sounds like you- oh, I?m so sorry,? Relena muttered as her cell phone began to ring. ?I don?t have to take it-?
?No, it?s all right. We both live in the same world, remember? Go ahead,?
?Thank you, James,? she picked up her phone from her purse and flipped it open.
?Relena Darlian,?
Silence.
?Hello??
?Hello Relena Darlian. Are you enjoying your date?? a voice whispered, Relena couldn?t even identify if it was male or female.
?Who is this?? Relena asked, James was staring at her.
The voice laughed and the line clicked, they hung up. Relena slowly lowered the phone from her ear, closing it.
?Relena?? James voice called.
?Relena, are you all right?? he asked, reaching out a hand across the table to take hers. Relena looked up at him, she squeezed his hand gently and then released it.
?I?m sorry, do you think we can cut this a little short? I? I feel like heading home.? she said, standing up.
James nodded. ?Of course, it?s fine. What was that call all about, are you all right?? James asked her, concern crossing his features, as he stood, dropped some money on the table, and escorted her out.
?It?s nothing, I am just a little tired.?
?Well, the least I can do is take you home in my car, the limo-?
?Is fine,? Relena said, stopping him and turning to face him. ?I will be ok, I am a big girl, James. Thank you for the night, it was lovely,? she smiled, her limo pulling up to the end of the walk.
James rested a hand on her cheek. ?And so are you,? he said, leaning forward. Relena turned her head, his lips gently touching her cheek. He kissed her and then pulled back, neither angry or embarrassed.
?Till next time, then, Miss Darlian,? he said, bending down to kiss her hand good-bye.
?Yes, good night James,? and with that, Relena let herself into her limo.
As the limo began its journey back to the mansion, Relena pulled out her phone and put it in the palm of her hand, just staring it. My house phone I can understand, but? my cell phone? Relena turned it on silent and placed it back in her purse. She knew she should tell Heero, but hell, with all the bugs his damn security team had had installed they probably knew already. Then why hadn?t he said anything? It?s just a prank, probably another ?underground terrorist group? consisting of a 40-year-old computer geek and his mom. But no matter what Relena told herself, she couldn?t make the feeling of uneasiness?of dread? go away.
Heero hadn?t even noticed he was pacing his room until his beeper buzzed at his desk. Finally stopping, her moved over to it. ?queen?s home?
Heero set it down and glanced at his door. He good intercept her on her way back to her room, find out what all had happened. Heero glanced at the clock, it was only 10:30-the ?date? had barely lasted three hours. Heero caught himself almost yanking open his door. What had happened to make the date be cut so short? Had James tried something? Or were they meeting up later?
Heero slowly released the door handly, silently cursing himself at his lack of control. He didn?t know how much longer he could contain it. An image of her earlier that day flashed through his mind. ?Damn it!? he growled, clenching his fist. Moving over to his phone, he picked it up and dialed. A small, sunlit voice answered, although she had probably been just getting ready for bed.
?Heero? What is it?? Cass asked.
Relena didn?t notice it was raining until she stepped out of the limo and water soaked her in moments. The driver rushed out, about to open an umbrella. Relena shouted as thunder rolled and lighting cracked the sky. ?I?m fine, you get home!? she called as she hurried towards the mansion, her hair and her dress already in shambles. She stepped into her home a wet puppy, soaked from dress to bone, as she slowly squished her way up to her room. Normally Heero would wait around for her on late nights, telling her some such security nonsense or simply just staring at her, but tonight he was nowhere to be seen. Well, good Relena thought bitterly. She didn?t care to see him anyway. Especially not like this.
Relena entered her room and immediately began to unzip her cold, wer dress. The banging of the open window stopped her. Relena moved over to her window, which she had left open earlier that night to get some fresh air. ?Shit,? she muttered in a very lady-like fashion as she attempted to wrestle the window shut.
At that moment lighting snapped once again across the sky and Relena saw a figure down below, a figure looking up at her. So, doing what all reasonable, intelligent and strong women did, she screamed bloody murder. Maybe it was the tension from the earlier calls, stress from work, or maybe just the storm, but that figure down below sent such a dark foreboding into her that she could not stop screaming. In the next moment to strong hand grabbed a hold of her arms and spun her around, Relena, fearing that someone had indeed come for her, raised a hand to punch her attacker. Heero deflected it easily. Shaking her, he gripped her tighter.
?What is it, Relena? Calm down! What?s wrong!?? he said, his voice rising as Relena had never heard it do.
Relena pointed a shaky finger to the window. Heero nearly threw her to the ground as he released her, moving to the window. He stared for a moment, the lighting flashes lighting up only half of his face, she could not read his expression.
He turned back to look at her after a few moments. Relena had caught herself upon one of the vertical poles that held up her canopy. Her hair, wet and sticking to her face, gave her the look of a half drowned woman. Her dress, half unzipped and heavy with water, hung down defiantly, a shoulder and the top half of her breasts having escaped their scarlet prison.
?I see nothing,? Heero told her, his voice almost husky.
Relena looked back at him defiantly, finally having come to her senses. She stood up and pushed passed him, looking back out the window. ?He was?he was right there,? she said weakly, pointing.
?There is no one there, Relena,? Heero said, putting a hand to his head and walking away from the window, away from her. Relena turned on him.
?I saw someone down there, I am not crazy!? she yelled, not really knowing why. Of course Heero hadn?t seen him, at her scream the freak had probably split.
?Relena, maybe you had to much to drink. I have seen you drunk before-? if Relena had been bit faster she would have hit him, but Heero caught her hand in mid-air. He simply held it there as his Prussian eyes boring down into hers.
?How dare you! Do I look drunk to you?? But Heero was not listening to her, his eyes had fallen from her face to her dress- the dress which had completely unzipped itself in the back and was sliding from her. Heero still held her wrist where he had caught it and with this grip upon her he pulled her to him, his warm body now pressed against her cold, shivering one. Relena couldn?t breath.
Heero?s free hand moved to her back, starting in the middle and sliding down the curve of her back. Relena arched against him slightly, her eyes on his face. The places where his hand slid burned, she could barely think. His fingers played down lower, caressing her flesh, reaching the point just above her buttocks, his breathing was low and volumable. Relena felt the fire building slowly in her, her body pressed against his, taking in his warmth. She felt him grow hard against her, his chest moved in and out heavily.
And then he pushed her from him, his eyes away from her. Turning, without saying a word, Heero left her room just as suddenly as he had entered it. The door slammed shut. Relena just stood there, her eyes upon the dark wood of the door, her dress fallen to her waist. In a burst of fury she ran at the door and fell against it, locking it. Her body shook with passion unanswered, her mind was to weak to process what had just happened. A hand still upon the lock, Relena lay her head against the door, focusing on the sound of the storm around her. The storm inside her. Slowly, always slowly, Relena closed her eyes and cried.

Been waiting for this one for a little while. I loved your first two. The second one sort of beat upon the wall of horror fiction, but this third one succeeded in knocking that wall down. Good job!
The voice described makes me think of the killer's garbled voice in "Saw". Creepy stuff, I like it; it's different. Makes me wonder what's really wrong. Looking forward to your next one!

She sure picked something nice to wear!
James sounds like a great guy!
That phone call was definitely scary!!! :-?
Makes me wonder who is behind it all. I also want to know how Heero and Cass'
date went! I hope it was terrible!! I know it's mean, but I'm a H*R shipper all the way!
Poor Relena! I would have been terrified after a call like that!
Plus she declined James' offer for company, and then that figure under her window!
Soooo creepy!!!
I loved this part:
I expected him to storm off, so like Heero, unable to deal with his emotions properly!
Nice update!

Ooh la la! So much has happened! I can't wait to find out about the creepy guy spying on her (maybe it's James, somehow? hehe) and what the heck is going on with Cass. And *sigh* the almost-passion between Heero and Relena was wonderfully written. I can't wait for the next installment!
