Living in A minor 2/?

Warnings: Still AU; Flustered Heero and Player Trowa. Potentially disturbing mental images of Duo.

Pairings: 1xR, 2xH, 4xC

Disclaimer Haiku: I do not own them;
Some big corporation does.
But I borrow them.

Author's Notes: WOOHOO! Made it through chapter 2! I apologize for it being so long in coming...being a one-shot queen myself, I'm not used to the kind of dedication these multi-parters take! I'll try my darnedest to shorten the time between chapters.
This chapter may be reworked at some point in the future...It's a bit short for my tastes, and it hasn't been beta-read, so it's totally up for revisions. Still, I really wanted to get it out soon. Enjoy!

Living in A minor
A fic by Vi

The choir room was packed and noisy by the time Heero made it back from lunch. Quatre sat at the piano and idly played bits from musical numbers. Catherine lay by his feet, head on her backpack, eyes closed as she hummed along. Duo was in the back corner tuning his guitar, with a gaggle of junior girls fawning over his every note. Next to the blackboard, Hilde took turns gossiping with friends and shooting poisonous glares at Duo's fan club. Carefully stepping over backpacks and bodies, Heero worked his way over to the tenor section, where Trowa appeared to be looking over his sheet music. Upon closer inspection, though, Heero discovered that he was reading a note composed in swirly feminine script.

"Who's that from?" Heero asked as he settled into his seat. Trowa hardly looked at him.

"Abigail," he replied nonchalantly, and kept reading.

Heero shook his head. For someone who made it a point not to socialize with most of his classmates, Trowa certainly had no problems attracting a date for Friday night. Or Saturday night. Or the odd Wednsday. "Is she Friday?"

Trowa shook his head. "Nope. Saturday. Anita is Friday."

"Working through the sophomore class alphabetically this year?" Heero asked.

"It does make it easier to keep track, doesn't it?" Trowa put the note away. "Maybe I'll start on the B's next week."

"What are you planning on doing Saturday night?"

Shrugging, Trowa pulled another note out of his pocket. "Drive-in movie, possibly. I got my truck back from the shop. Why?"

"You should make Quatre ask Cathy out and double." Heero was starting to get a little irritated by the blond boy's constant state of melancholy. "Spare us a year of emotional turmoil."

"In that case, maybe you should bring Relena and we'll triple."

Clenching his teeth, Heero feigned innocence. "What do you mean by that?"

"You know exactly what I mean. We're not stupid, Heero. Every one of us saw what was going on at Bo's."

"Nothing happened at Bo's. I didn't even talk to her."

"You didn't have to."

Before Heero could fashion a suitably acidic responce, the source of his discontent made her entrance and instantly short-circuited his brain.

"Speak of the goddess," muttered Trowa, and turned his attention back to his note. Which was a good thing, because otherwise the look on Heero's face would have been cause for another round of taunting.

How could he explain what she was to him? She was more than just some girl, more than his friend. In four years of high school he'd yet to come across anyone quite like Relena Darlian. Their relationship had been brief but intense...enough so to make them seriously consider what was in store for them after graduation. That discussion, held one emotional evening after mid-terms, had been the beginning of the end for them. He could still remember the look in her eyes as she explained to him her plans for the future. I won't be just some housewife, Heero. I can't.

Heero's reverie was interrupted by the clapping of Miss Noin's hands. "Backrubs!" she ordered in her no-nonsense tone, driving the class to their feet.

They assembled themselves loosely in two lines, turning to massage the neck and back of the person they stood next to. Hilde squeezed in next to Duo, and Cathy positioned herself surreptitiously behind Quatre, not even noticing the obvious reddish tinge that was spreading over the back of the blond boy's neck. And women think we're oblivious, Heero thought to himself as he watched the both of them, smirking at every clue and hint that was dropped by one and ignored by the other. Before he could make a sarcastic comment to Trowa, though, a pair of familiar feminine hands rested themselves on his neck and robbed him of the power of speech for the second time in the last ten minutes.

"Have you been going to the chiropractor?" Relena asked in her best concerned-mom voice. "You've been walking like your back is getting worse." Carefully she began to knead the muscles between his shoulder blades, working out the knots with skilled fingers.

The tenderness in her touch made Heero clench his teeth. "I'm fine," he managed to grunt through his locked jaw. "I've just been stressed lately."

"And you carry all your stress in your lower back," Relena murmured under her breath, more to herself than to anyone else. Her hands strayed lower, probing the taut area between his ribcage and his tailbone. Heero closed his eyes and willed himself to think about baseball...drag races...Duo in a tutu...

"Switch!" Miss Noin yelled, and everyone turned to the person at their back. Heero hesitated for just a second, then finally reached up and used his thumbs to massage Relena's neck at the base of her skull. It was a spot he knew she had problems with. He was rewarded with a little shiver that ran up the length of her back, and she tilted her head slightly to the left.

"Mmmm...thank you, Heero," She said, in a tone that was very close to the way she had sounded when they had-

"All right, guys, line it up, guys to the left, girls to the right. Tallest to shortest." Noin stood at her music stand, trying to shuffle a very large stack of assorted sheet music into some semblance of order.

"Partners already?! Isn't it way early for that?" Duo asked incredulously. He had been hoping to have another week of standing next to Hilde before he had to work with anyone else.

"We go to Florida in March," Noin reminded him. "Which means we need to start on some of the more difficult pieces now...which means, I want everyone to be comfortable with their partners for as long as possible before we go."

Heero eyed the line of girls next to him. Quatre was shorter than he was, by just an inch or two. Trowa was taller by about the same amount. Catherine would probably wind up with her brother, and Hilde usually wound up with Quatre. Wufei's partner last year had been a girl named Dorothy, and she probably would be again this year. Duo was standing next to one of the new girls, Midii something...and Heero was standing right next to...

"Hey there, partner." She had pasted a big smile on her face, but Heero could see the strain in her deep blue eyes. "Looks like it's you and me again."

He didn't need to turn around to tell that Trowa was smirking at him again.
