Inuyasha woke up with a startle as he found the angel nowhere near the room. His eyes searched the small place but she was not there. He quickly stood up and went for the door. He was certain he could have missed it if he didn?t glance at the kitchen table. On the table was a small piece of paper, probably a note. Frowning, he read:
Good morning.
I'm buying breakfast right now and will be back as soon as possible, so don?t worry. I'm afraid you've eaten all the ramen we have.
Love,
Kagome
Putting the note back on the table, he went to the refrigerator -not because he was hungry, but simply to check if she was just using food as an excuse to leave him alone. Shutting the fridge close, relief outweighed the building hunger and suspicion instantly. There was nothing inside the fridge but only a few pieces of raw vegetables.
Knowing that breakfast and the angel were still on its way, he stepped in the shower and took a sharp intake of breath as the cold water hit his warm body. Closing his eyes, he welcomed the numbing sprinkle of iced water on his head and back.
Did he really cry last night?
As far as he knew, crying was a girl's deal -not for boys and especially not for men. According to his observance as demon and several earthbound rumors, crying males were very seldom when it came to everyday life. Multitudes of tears from men and women alike were acceptable only when it came to issues such as wars and the death of a loved one. He was not sure what exact millenium, era, century his being made real sense but vivid awareness only dawned on him clearly around Miroku Satoshi and the boy only cried when he was a toddler. The boy shed tears because of silly stumbles and shallow bruises but aside from terrible-two mishaps, Miroku shed no tears.
But there was just so much emotion last night that he could not contain. It became hard for the half-demon and the tension was released through being close to her, hugging her fiercely till she could not breathe and finally, collapsing to a weeping feat. As much as he wanted to feel ashamed of being brutally honest with himself and for the act of crying, he was undoubtedly at ease, his heart was beating mildly and waiting? waiting for Kagome to return, to have her in his arms again.
He had forced himself on her last night and the raging passion he felt was sprinkled with a little guilt. But kissing Kagome was too much of an ecstasy. Her lips were full, soft and moist -it was all too perfect that it beautifully locked with his. The feeling was too alive and present, Inuyasha could have chosen to die with such a marvelous memory. It was a first for both and Inuyasha knew it was better -the greatest better that could have been instead of one good fuck with some slut or whore. Just a kiss was enough to rapture his heart with so much? so much love.
Inuyasha shivered at the thought of loving. He perfectly knew he was so wrong about his heart. But his heart, his frail human heart loved Kagome and it felt so sane. Everything about their situation brought about so many feelings he never dared to feel and think about.
Who cares if he was hanyou and she was an angel?
There was a thin line that united them and it was being human. Inuyasha wouldn?t have it any other way. He loved her. Yes, he terribly loved the angel. He would have laughed, should have laughed at the actuality of it all but it was true. Not there was no one else to love under the circumstances but he knew, deep inside, that the moment he saw her when he entered Goshinbu -she made her mark on him, he, unconsciously sealing himself to her.
The demon inside him fenced with his heart. It was not right, not from him. How could he think such impossibilities?
He was demon, but he was not dumb. He had to give God some credit. Though they were demons -He had spared them to be slick and wise. Inuyasha decided to use that as an advantage.
His sensitive ears heard the door click and open, interrupting his silent musings. Hastily he closed the shower and grabbed a clean T-shirt, wore his boxers and pants and hurried out the door.
Relief flooded him once again as he saw her whole, standing in the kitchen, starting to cook. She gave him that slaying smile and he rushed to her and could not resist but wrap his arms around her and give her a deep kiss on the mouth. He closed his eyes and seethed into the loving feel of their kiss and the essence of her scent.
She was shocked, he felt it. Her body stiffened but as he held her closer, he felt her hands mat on his chest gently. She did not pull away and he must have been smashed.
Inuyasha groaned as he felt her palms on his chest, she was humbly submitting to him, this angel -his girl, this woman -Kagome. As he opened his eyes to look at her, he released her and saw the very cute blush on her face that amused him to no extent.
"W-well?" she spoke in a whisper. "Good morning to you, too."
Inuyasha snorted and took her hand in his. He went to the chair and pulled her to sit on his lap. He carefully slid his arm around her waist and looked up to her face. "So. What happened last night?"
Kagome winced and she swallowed hard. Her beautiful face that was always so vibrant now dimmed with a darkness of fear and loneliness. She reached out and touched his face. "Inuyasha?" she started, uneasiness obviously blotted in her voice. "The Head Demon Sesshoumaru? he came last night."
His human heart gave a loud thump. Frowning, he studied her face and knew she was really affected by the demon's appearance. His fingers deepened against her skin as he held her close. "Did he touch you?" If ever the demon did, he would certainly have no second thoughts about putting up a fight.
"No," she whispered.
Inuyasha said nothing and reluctantly let her leave his arms, letting her prepare their breakfast. He studied her from the chair where he sat, knowing that there was something else that she was hiding from him. He chose not to interrogate her forcibly but he will make sure he would know about what Sesshoumaru told her or did to her. He clenched his jaw as he recalled the stain of tears on her beautiful face and the anger he so much desired sparked up inside of him. At least now he knew who was responsible for her weeping. No one was allowed to make her cry.
They ate breakfast together and he dried the plates she washed. He now stood inches closer to her than before, unafraid of who saw them or what might she think. He lingered on the vibrant warmth her body had, wishing he always could wrap his arms around her and kiss her again. They talked about school, the group date Miroku was proposing, and many other unimportant things. Well, it was important to Kagome, but Inuyasha had other things in mind. He tried hard to keep listening to her, but all the while his thoughts led only to the beautiful Head Demon. Every time he took a breath, a curse clouded his vision, sending thousand negative energies and bad chants to Sesshoumaru's lair. Loathe filled his brain and if it weren't for Kagome's presence, he would have exploded out of frustrating anger.
"Inuyasha? Are you okay?" her voice asked, interrupting his cruel intentions. Worry mirrored her eyes as she stared at him.
Inuyasha nodded. "Of course I'm OK." Its you who I'm worried about. If only your kind were a little more honest. Maybe they were still intact with their heavenly fervor just like every time they would be sent to give a message -not revealing very important details to the humans, leaving the pitiful creatures to figure out the mystery themselves or so they say, 'it depends on His will.' Kagome was pretty much doing the same thing to him. Leaving him wondering, thinking about what were behind her actions and simple words. If only those stupid angels knew how frustrating guessing was. If he didn?t love her enough, he might as well have scolded her mad till she broke down and told him everything that happened.
It took a while when he noticed that she had her shoulder bag hung in her arm and he frowned. "You're leaving me again?"
Kagome gave him a puzzled look. She walked over to him and touched his face. "Seriously, are you feeling alright? I asked you twice already if you wanted to go with me. I'm going to Sango's. Do you want to come?"
Inuyasha stared at her, feeling lost as he stared into her brown eyes. What did he show you, Kagome? What are you really thinking? "Yes."
The angel rolled her eyes and shook her head. "Then start moving, Inuyasha! Sango's feeling sick, remember? I want to check on how she's doing."
Yes, Sango was sick. How natural for her guardian to think of visiting. What more can he expect from an angel? Inuyasha got on his feet and went for their cabinet. He pulled out two cotton hooded sweatshirts and handed the other one to her. What was this woman thinking? She goes out doing things for others and she forgets about herself! Stupid girl. It was a cold morning outside, Inuyasha could tell.
Kagome took the piece of clothing with surprised eyes. "Thanks."
Inuyasha grunted and got ready to leave. He slipped his feet in his running shoes and combed his hair. He went to the door quickly and opened it for her. "Oi? come on. So we could get back before dark." When Sango and Kagome got together, it was like they haven't seen each other for a long time. They chat about things that both of them already knew about. They -women, were confusing beings.
Kagome nodded quickly and stepped outside the door.
They walked together, her arm linked with his. Inuyasha could feel the warmth in his cheeks and the strange sensation on his fingertips -cold and warm at the same time, and the supernatural fluttering inside the chest.
He was conscious of the eyes that glanced at them as they walked, probably wondering why a beautiful woman was with him. But in reality, what the hanyou did not or never will know, was why the people stared at them was because of the odd aura they created, a clash of extreme opposite melodies that seemed radically disturbing yet very admissible.
Keep her safe. It was all that the half-demon thought of while they strolled leisurely to Sango's house. As much as he intended to protect her from demons -if ever Sesshoumaru sent some to harm Kagome, his defensive air was now for a common reason for males who escort beautiful women. A lot of young men that they have encountered gave his innocent trusting company either inviting or perverted looks and Inuyasha made sure to mirror their deaths with the glare of his amber eyes, making it clear to back off what was his. The humans were submissive, thankfully. Surely he did not want to ruin such a splendid moment of togetherness in public just because of them.
The angel unhooked her grip from Inuyasha's arm as Sango's place came into view and she hurriedly went to the door and knocked.
Inuyasha stood behind her, on-guard of whatever may come. His pulse tightened for a fraction of a second before the door opened. His instincts knew the troublemaker too well. Just as he thought, it was Miroku. He watched as Kagome's form waver with shock and she put her clenched fists on her waist.
"What are you doing here, Miroku!" she exclaimed, giving the young man an accusing glare. "You're not taking advantage of Sango's condition, are you?"
Miroku shook his head quickly and opened the door wider to welcome them inside. "Please come in, Kagome-chan!" He turned to Inuyasha. "Inuyasha, you came with Kagome-chan?! How charming, the both of us! We come to protect and serve our beloved."
Inuyasha raised a brow at him and snickered. Sometimes, the kid could really be pathetic. Seeing that Kagome had left for Sango's room, he sat on the couch. He caught a glimpse of the trouble and worry behind Miroku's happy face. He shook his head disappointedly and crossed his arms across his chest. "She'll be fine, Miroku. Sniffles aren't really fatal, you know." Nobody told him about Sango's cold, and he knew Miroku was too worried to even wonder how he found out. His keen sense of smell alerted the sickness that emanated from the place. It was good that his body was sniffles-proof, that he knew. He then wanted to take Kagome home quickly. What if she caught some of the germs from Sango's sneeze?
Miroku nodded at his statement and smiled. "I know. Its just that I don?t want anything to happen to her, may it be just a little bruise or a little cold." He kept glancing at Sango's door. "I mean, don?t you feel that way about Kagome-chan? Women appear tough at times but the truth is, they still need our support or help in some way."
Watching Miroku fuss over the kitchen to get something for Sango, instead of offering them -the guests, a glass of water, Inuyasha couldn?t help but think that maybe Cupid shot the poor guy too much of his lovesick arrows. The feeling must really be this powerful to have buried all the demon's years of effort of making him the worse man to be in love with. Inuyasha frowned at the senior, unable to comprehend that it was really Miroku Satoshi -his prey for all his life, that was speaking to him in a very sensible way. If there was someone who could tell if he was lying, surely, it was his evil life-long friend. And now, Inuyasha knew that Miroku was really vulnerable. Terribly suffering from a love-bug.
But oh, was his product a real thinker now! It was true, he did feel the same way about Kagome. Wasn?t he thinking about her safety the whole time? Maybe sniffles or a bruise would be better to befall Kagome. At least it was physical and less heart-scarring. To see her up against someone like Sesshoumaru wasn?t a very comfortable idea. Though he knew Heaven's angels were more powerful than any other demon that could exist, the problem was, Kagome was half-human now. She was suffering the state of vulnerability and her mind now had every single space fit enough for doubt, fear, and regret. She could ask for Heaven's help to battle against Sesshoumaru, if ever that was the case, but Inuyasha was too sure he recalled what Kagome said herself several weeks before.
'To be human is to be free of that knowledge.'
Inuyasha wasn't too sure what exactly could Kagome do. According to the little information Kagome gave him this morning, it was as if Sesshoumaru came to her in their place. Why then wasn?t there Holy Intervention?
"Inuyasha?"
Was it possible that God was punishing her because of him?? That it was possible that the Maker Himself be cruel after all?
"Inuyasha!"
He blinked twice and saw Kagome's face above him, giving him a frown of chagrin. "Yeah?"
"I said, 'Let's go home. Sango needs her rest now,'" she repeated, her clenched fists on her waist. "You're really acting all weird on me, Inuyasha. Something must be bothering you, right?"
"Sango is okay now?" he asked, trying to appear attentive. He stood up and went for the door. His eyes searched for Miroku but found him nowhere.
"No. I told her that I could stay over but her mom called and would be coming over," Kagome said. "Miroku volunteered to pick up Sango's mom from the station. Sweet, huh?" She giggled and held onto his arm again as they began to walk back towards the apartment. "I told Sango I should stay and wait till her mom came but she insisted we leave. She said she didn?t want us to catch her cold and then she'll feel responsible and guilty if ever we did get sick."
"So she doesn?t mind Miroku being sick then?"
"That's what she told me," Kagome said. "You know what, you're pretty weird today."
Inuyasha saw that she was observing his face so he lifted his face to study the sky instead. "Well, you're the one not telling me everything." Her touch left his body as he walked. She stopped and stood at the sidewalk, probably staring at his white head. He turned to look at her and saw the confusion in her eyes. Before he could come closer, she seemingly changed her expression and hopped right back beside him.
"I actually had the feeling that you scolded me," she whispered, her fingers twiddling with each other. Her head was bowed, gaze locked on the pavement.
"I actually did."
"Why?"
"Like always," he replied hardly. "You're always being unfair. You demand my honesty but when I want the same thing from you, you deprive me of it."
"I'm sorry," Kagome murmured, her hands holding onto the sleeve of his shirt. She pressed herself closer as they walked, magnetized to him, not wanting any distance. "I just want to stay like this, Inuyasha. Without worries and distress."
Inuyasha stopped walking and glanced at her. He pulled his arm from her grasp and put it securely around her shoulders. "In this world, Kagome, you know as much as I do that life like that isn't possible. What we could do is at least try to help each other." He hoped she got what he was trying to say. It simply meant, I need you to need me, too, Kagome. Like the way I need you.
The angel only nodded, leaning her head on his chest as they sauntered back to their home.
