Longing, we say, because desire is full of endless distances - Robert Hass
She had given him a book of quotations, most of which were scrawled out neatly in her handwriting. The hardbound cover was worn down, the corners bent and wrinkled and pieces of the cover was torn in some areas. He guessed that she had not been the first person to write down her thoughts in that journal. He remembered that she had once mentioned that her adopted mother gave it to her on her fifteenth birthday...
"The extra pages she left were so I could continue writing down my own thoughts," she explained as she handed the weatherbeaten book to him.
He fingered the last page where her writing had ended, a melancholy feeling welling up inside him. There were a few pages left. He counted maybe ten or so. She asked him to write down his thoughts in them, just as a way of telling his story in a few verses.
That one last quote he had read rang true. He would never forget the look in her eyes as she fought for her last breath and passed away in his arms, a slight smile on her face. Leukemia, they had told him, it had spread too fast and without warning. What started out as a harmless cyst in her ovaries developed into something he could not protect her from.
He remembered being angry. They were light years advanced in medical technology and yet, there was no cure. He could only watch as she battled against it inside of her; he could only hold her hand as he watched the life ebb out of her along with the tide.
There was a time in their lives when he could follow her wherever she went. He could protect her from anything. There was a time when he could reach out to touch her and she would be there. He found his way to her because he needed her. But this time, she stopped him from going anywhere with her. He had an obligation other than herself. This time, she needed him to stay behind.
"Daddy?"
Heero looked up from his desk to find his fifteen-year-old daughter standing at the doorway of his room. "Kimika, honey? What's wrong?"
Kimika shook her head and smiled, her dark blue orbs so similar to his glittering with the same empathy that she could only have inherited from her mother. "I've fixed us dinner. Akira-niisan will be back from baseball practice soon..."
He nodded, feeling a weight lift off his chest. "I'll be right down, koneko*. I just need to finish a few things."
"Okay, Daddy. But don't take too long, there's a lot of gyoza waiting for you," Kimika replied before heading back downstairs. She paused and turned back to him, her eyes still sparkling but with a trace of sadness. "Dad, it's okay to miss Mom sometimes. She'll always be ours to miss."
"Aa..."
He turned back to the journal on his desk, the last page now turned to reveal a blank one. Slowly, he picked up a pen and wrote:
If I could live with you now, you would know that I could never be happier than I am now with what you have given me...
