Unlike Heero?s caves, which were frigid and dark, Quatre?s glowed the way you?d expect inside an active volcano. It was an active volcano actually. They had entered the side of the mountain sometime before dark and at first the hotness was a relief. Now it was just oppressive underneath all her layers, but she?d be damned if she discarded a single piece of clothing. Heero strode forward purposefully, his sword occasionally bumping rocks and causing echoes. In the hazy glow from the lava flows beneath the ledges on which they walked, Relena thought he resembled a demon.
?Let?s stop somewhere soon, I need to rest and have some water.? Heero didn?t turn around at her words, but he grunted something like an assent. She understood why he was so anxious to get to Quatre. Something about him had been so stiff this morning. Maybe it had something to do with last night. Relena?s mind wandered to memories of last night. . .
?Geez, I feel like a kebab on a barbecue in here. Why is it so warm suddenly??
?It?s a volcano. Quatre doesn?t like the cold very much.? Heero sat and chewed on some meat, (Relena didn?t want to ask and just munched on more questionable greens). It wasn?t a large meal, but at least her head had stopped hurting again. Never ever would she take a feast for granted again. Especially dessert. Thinking back she wondered what happened to all that extra food her guests had not consumed. When she got home there had to be some better management in regards to food preparation and distribution. But that was assuming she got home. No, no, of course you?ll go home.
As Relena absorbed herself in strange thought processes, she was all the more disturbed by the way Heero touched her shoulder. Starting, she gave him a questioning look. He looked into her eyes seeming to search for something. Rolling his helmet from his head and throwing it to the side, he went back to looking at her. Relena didn?t want to continue looking because of the intensity of his gaze, but just couldn?t break away. Finally, the tension was too much for her.
?You know, they say that eye contact is a sign of aggression among animals, just like baring your teeth.? She demonstrated, widening her eyes and smiling to show both sets of teeth. At some point, her eyes crossed. Heero seemed to twitch. After a moment the twitching seemed to transfer to his shoulders, and then his whole body was shaking before the chuckling became audible. Sitting down next to her, the rich sound of his laughter forcing away the awkwardness of just a moment ago, Relena tried to think of some way to capitalize on his sudden good humor. When she had accumulated sufficient courage she reached over and ran her hands through his lovely thick brown hair. He got very still as she ran her hands though it a few times and, with a glint of something in her eye, began to grab handfuls of it and stand it up. Tortured by grease and wind, it obeyed her fairly easily and soon it looked as if poor Heero had suddenly had all the static electricity in the world run through him. Now it was Relena?s turn to laugh. Before she could pull away he grabbed both her hands at the wrists.
?Do you, I mean, would you like to sleep with me again?? He didn?t know why he asked. Relena?s breath drew in slightly sharply and she bit her lip a little. Several emotions ran across her face. Ultimately she blushed and nodded. Heero nodded at her with a rare smile. Then against all expectations, began taking his clothes off!
?Gahhh!? Relena yelped. ?What in name of everything holy do you think you?re doing??
?I?m not used to clothing. With you for warmth plus the natural heat here, I shouldn?t have to. . .?
?Oh no you don?t! There are certain proprieties that civilized humans follow.? Relena?s bad little girl made a face inside her mind as her good little girl lectured Heero. He really is quite handsome.
?I?m not human.?
?You are at the moment! I won?t sleep next to you if you?re, er, naked!? I think you would anyway. Relena wondered if she could smack herself and get rid of all the terrible impulses that accompanied the thought of a naked Heero.
?Fine. We?ll compromise. You like compromise, right?? Relena nodded in mute agreement and crossed her arms over her chest. Heero smiled deviously as he discarded the pantaloons and tore off the tights from the knees down. Now looking as if he were in a mere tank top and tight shorts, Relena wondered why she had a brief flash of recognition. ?Is this to your liking?? With a reluctant nod Relena sat down in the spot she had cleared out for sleeping. As Heero curled up next to her and blithely sank into slumber, Relena burned inside her many layers of robes. Sweating and cursing her luck she entered a fitful sleep. . .
. . . and that was how her night had gone. Heero seemed to be fine in the heat with just the ripped shirt and makeshift shorts, though he had put the sword and armor back on as well. The further in they got the more sweltering the heat got and Relena thought that she had lost at least three pounds in the last hour just from water escaping her body only to be absorbed by the damnable robes. Her cheeks were apple red and she thought that she was going to collapse from heat exhaustion. When they reached a place where the cave opened up a lot, Heero pointed to a rock and Relena practically slumped down onto it. Closing her eyes a moment she tried to enjoy the moment of rest when she felt something tugging at her arm, startling her out of the near oblivion she had momentarily allowed herself. Looking back, she noticed that the tugging was Heero, and he was busily engaged in removing her clothes. REMOVING HER CLOTHES?!
?Kyaaaaa! What are you doing?? She tried to clutch at the top layer he had almost divested her of, but was unsuccessful as he tossed it to the side.
?You?ll die of heat stroke at this rate. I am simply doing what you are too stubborn to do for yourself.? With that, they began a wrestling match that Relena, as exhausted mentally and physically as she was, could not hope to win against the much stronger and more determined Heero. With yelps and screeches Relena was forcefully stripped by Heero until all she had on were her underdressings, essentially a thick satin slip that went down to her knees. Straddling her stomach, a gleam of triumph and something else in his eyes, Heero looked down at the girl he had just fought tooth and claw against. Disheveled and a little irate, Relena looked up into his dark eyes and wondered why it was that even though she had just gotten rid of all that clothing she still felt so very warm looking at him. A rumbling echoed in the cavern and Heero jumped off of her to draw his sword.
?Tell me right now why I shouldn?t fry you to a crisp for invading my realm so audaciously, other than the fact that your antics have briefly amused me. That certainly is not enough on its own.? The voice sounded terribly friendly even if it seemed to be promising certain doom. Something moved in the heat beyond them, the wavy quality of the air obscuring vision from being very clear. There was little doubt this was a large creature though.
?Heero, of Zero Mountain gives greetings to Elder Quatre of Sandrock Mountain, I come to you with no menace.? Heero?s voice was strong, but Relena saw his body shiver a moment. The form quickly came near, revealing a indeed the massive head and shoulders of a dragon, wings outspread.
?You send greetings as if you were one of us, but that cannot be so. Speak quickly and convincingly.? Quatre?s voice was so soft, even though his head was close to them. Relena thought she smelled brimstone and smoke and sneezed.
?The one here beneath me is the Enchantress whom I was charged with dealing with by the Council. Through strange circumstances she has cast a spell upon me that has changed my form, and must wait before she can cast it again. Hence, trapped in this form I appeal to you to take me to the Council at the appointed time so that I may fulfill my mission and return to how I should be.? He lowered his sword and placed it next to his foot. The dragon?s head came even closer, a great eye examining both Heero and Relena underneath him, it was a pretty eye at that. Clear and unblinking.
?It is hard to believe a mere slip of a girl is the Queen of the humans, or an Enchantress. Even harder that Heero, my friend and closest neighbor, was taken in my any of her spells. Do you have proof of your story??
Relena saw Heero?s entire body tense as he tried to think of something with which to prove his identity. Rising first to her knees and then to stand next to Heero, Relena unwound her wand from her hair and placed a hand upon Heero?s shoulder as if to convince him that all would be well. Of all the spells she knew, there was one that she could not forget. Ordinarily useless, she wove the glamour about her, appearing to change in front of both dragon and man into a being of radiance and power. Her voice was amplified and echoed throughout the caves.
?I am the Princess of Peace. Listen to his words dragon Quatre, for he speaks the truth. In a moment of confusion I transformed dragon Heero into what you now see. I will restore him in good time, once I am strong enough to do so. Now, I must conserve my powers if I am to change him back, if you?ll excuse me.? Her illusionary self retracted and once again she looked like what she was: a smaller, less clad, and infinitely dirtier version of the giant goddess that had just filled the cavern. Both dragon and man stood there with mouth ajar and eyes wide. In fact, they looked so much alike, barring difference in species, that Relena stifled a giggle. That was the spell she used to use for formal speeches when peace was new and impressions were important. Such displays were no longer needed, but it was nice to know they still had an impact.
?Indeed, this bit of female is the Enchantress that we have long feared to confront. Well met, Your Majesty.? Quatre made something like a bow in her direction. Relena attempted to curtsy back. ?So, that makes you Heero.?
?Hn.? He looked angry and crossed his arms at the laughter in the dragon?s voice.
?Yes.? Quatre said with a chuckle. ?There is no doubt you are Heero.?
* * * * *
Heero?s eyes followed Quatre as he swept outside with Relena. She had been most adamant about a bath, and since they were near an active volcano, Quatre knew where to find some hot springs heated by thermals. Not knowing what else to do while they were gone, Heero stared down at his hands. The creases and the soft skin were still so foreign after a lifetime of scales. Even so, when he unbent his hands and held them flat, they looked strange. After a moment he realized that there were no lines, like other humans had, as he had not had a lifetime to bend them to form such things. Yet another testament to how out of place he was in this body. He wondered for a moment it the body, the strange wiry muscles, the feeling of thick heavy bones as compared to the hollow ones dragons had, it felt so. . . solid. The unnatural senses he had had as a dragon seemed intact, however, with his sight, hearing, and smell all being much more acute than the average person, but that is all that remained to remind him other than a memory of his former self. For a moment he wondered if being human was addictive. Clutching at his hair in consternation, he stared down at the ground intently.
Being a human wasn?t what was addictive. It was that woman.
Her quick smiles and strange stubbornness pulled at him in a way he couldn?t quite pinpoint based on his past experiences. At once he wanted to wrap his hands around her throat and his arms about her waist. Long ago he remembered hearing that humans were always in heat, and he had dismissed it as a baser instinct unable to be conquered by such lowly creatures, but when he had held her in his arms as they slept last night he realized that even he might not be able to get over the strong instinct that screamed to him that this woman was his mate. It horrified him to be attracted to a human. Quatre didn?t help matters when he returned to talk while Relena bathed.
?So what are you going to do about her? Seems like this has become more than a mission to you. The Elders won?t like it if you interfere. Elder Wufei. . .?
?. . has no power over me. I abide by the Council as I always have. They will have to grant me my request.?
?You can?t be serious.? Quatre snorted smoke into Heero?s face. ?Her destiny is death by Council orders. You cannot appeal. She is not your possession.?
?Then I will make her my possession. By the laws of the High Council, no dragon may take another dragon?s possession. Such has been the way for countless millennia and strict adherence to this rule has kept us all from killing each other for riches. What is one human?? Heero crossed his hands over his chest defensively.
?Pah! One human is of no consequence. The Enchantress is no mere human, however, and they will take exception to your attempt to claim her, unless you plan to eat her.? Quatre chuckled. ?And it looked for a moment as if that?s exactly what you were going to do when you were removing her vestments.?
Heero stood and walked away without a word. Not uncommon for his behavior and Quatre was not offended by it. If he were upset by such small things they would have come to blows long ago. Since Heero was at such a rare disadvantage at the moment, however, Quatre could not help but pick on him a little. With a great bellow and a leap, Quatre took to the air inside the cavern and swooped down upon the stunned Heero. Struggling against the claws, he quickly realized that plummeting onto rocks at this speed and from the height they were attaining would be less than wise. Unwilling to allow his ridiculous friend the satisfaction of his curiosity, he went limp and tried to sort out what to do about Relena. No sooner had her name popped into his mind that he saw the slip she had previously been in lying, dripping, from a tree branch. There were other garment lying out to dry there as well, less familiar to him, but most likely still hers. If they were there, then that meant they weren?t on her. For someone so smart he was being very dense. Giving him a shove in the direction of the clothes, Quatre backed away into a copse of trees to wait. The mocking hisses echoed into the distance. He?d get back at that idiot later, Heero thought.
Compelled by dark forces that he just could not push away, Heero found himself going in the direction he was sure the hot water lay. Still, his stubborn mind refused to acknowledge the implications of his actions. After a moment he came across what he was searching for. Something told him, in that sixth sense that any good voyeur or assassin must have to survive, that he must be very quiet. When he made his way into the clearing containing the ponds of steaming water, he quickly identified a red-white figure in the far edge. His breath caught as he stared, transfixed, at the picture she offered. Her wet hair was dark and hung in strands about her shoulders, with a bit of it crossing her front to mold to the orbs that just broke the surface in front of her. Head lolled to one side, eyes closed, her smile was elusive. Inside Heero?s mind, something came undone. Striding into the water, regardless of his clothing, he made his way across the pool towards her.
Sensing the disturbance in current, Relena lifted up her head and cracked open her eyes. With a yelp, her eyes flew open as Heero filled her vision. His hair was matted against his forehead, obscuring one eye, the other conveying more than she was comfortable seeing. Picking one hand out of the water, she watched the drops slowly move down his fingertips. Clutching her arms around her body, she realized just how trapped she was. There was no leaving the water, to run naked through the mountainside, but at the same time she couldn?t very well stay here like this. Her dilemma have her pause, her mind buzzing furiously as Heero?s hand came closer with a slowness that made her stomach ache with a peculiar feeling. When his hand finally came in contact with her skin, it was just her shoulder that he touched, only to move around the slope of her collarbone.
?What are you doing?? Relena?s whisper was afraid, truly afraid, for the first time since she had encountered Heero.
?Mine.? He responded, eyes boring into hers. There was a spark of something in them that seemed to burn and flicker. Maybe he wasn?t that far away from being the dragon he had always been. ?You are mine. Mine to protect, and to jealously guard.? His hand began to slide from around her throat to the center of her chest. ?Don?t think I am doing this for your sake. I am as selfish as any creature, and I don?t like to share. If I must alienate myself from my clan, if I must strike down a thousand knights come to rescue you, if I must die and resurrect just to keep you one more day to myself, I would do it. I mean to own you completely, Enchantress.?
?Relena.? Her eyes began to tear up a bit, even as they betrayed her lightening quick mood change from fear to anger. ?My NAME is Relena. And I am no one?s possession.? She knocked his hand off her body with a sharp slap that was swallowed by the moisture hanging in the air. Too angry to even care about her state of undress, she stood up and began to stalk past him. Perhaps if she hadn?t stood up she would have made it more than two steps, as Heero lunged forward onto her. Forcing her back into a sitting position, he straddled her legs and pinned them between his own. Leaning forward he brought his face next to her neck, even as she began to struggle, and bit down into the soft flesh. Shock and pain registering, she wondered if he had drawn blood, but continued to struggle anyway. The more she moved the harder down he bit, only lessening the pressure when she stayed still. One hand had snaked around to her back and caressed her spine, and even the arms she had been using to beat and push at him with ceased their frantic attempts to affect him.
Heero, for his part, was very happy with his progress. Mating rituals were difficult sometimes. He had witnessed enough ceremonies to know what was expected of him. All things considered, she was responding well. She had been prevented from fighting him, and that was the first step. However, there was a problem in that, once the female was subdued he didn?t quite know what happened next. Really he was quite a young dragon and he had reached maturity after the last mating ritual. This was all new to him, and quite confusing as well. If he had had a tail he would have used it to gently pet her back, in the soothing motions he had observed, but his hands seemed to be doing quite well. She was so slick, and the water made all his movements slow and deliberate. Releasing his teeth from her neck, he licked the marks that were left behind in an attempt to sooth them. After a moment of that, Relena gave a small groan. Taking the initiative to continue such pleasing noises coming from her, he began to taste more of her body tracing a path similar to that which his hand had traveled at the start of all this. He was rewarded with a gasp that made his smile curl at the sides of his mouth even as he took one nipple into his mouth as Relena arched her back up and projected it out of the water.
Trying to collect her senses was turning out to be the most difficult thing she could possibly do at this moment. A voice in Relena?s mind screamed at her. WHAT are you doing? What are you letting him do? Hello. Anybody there? You are letting this boy do things to your body that you won?t even let others talk about in your presence, you know. You?d better stop this before it gets one step further. In her mind she backhanded the voice and told it to shut the hell up for once, which then Heero promptly helped her do as his mouth began to search out new and more sensitive skin. It wouldn?t do to let him have all the control. Even in his awkward, bent over, kneeling position Relena still had enough sense of positioning to run her hand over the bulge in the thick tights he had made into shorts. Heero gasped and his back suddenly went straight as a pole. Obviously, he didn?t expect that. Relena allowed a chuckle to escape.
In a fit of passion, Heero began to struggle to get off his sodden clothes, only to find thick, tight, and wet fabric to be one of the most unforgiving when it came to removal. The mood broke as Relena watched him fight against the clothes he wore, and she touched her neck to where he had bit her. It still stung a bit, and she probably had an angry mark there. The fearsome, capable, lust maddened Heero had his shirt halfway past his head when his frantic flailing set him off balance. Like a domino, he toppled backwards into the pool with a splash only to come up sputtering with his shirt in his hand. He looked ready to murder something, blue eyes flashing, and Relena couldn?t remember seeing anything funnier in a long time. The humid air mostly muffled the laughter, but she was sure that it must have traveled further than the clearing because she was laughing fit to burst her sides.
After dunking under one more time, she surfaced and stood, no longer afraid of the predatory Heero who had just made himself so terribly ridiculous. Some wind moved about her, not able to move her hair, but certainly making her body cold enough to be noticeable. Like some glistening nymph, she climbed from the pool and sauntered around the edge back to where her clothes were. She did not look over, but she could feel his eyes on her, as through his sopping hair he followed her movements with grim and inexplicable determination. His look held as much threat as promise, and out of the corner of her eye she caught it. With a shake of her head she moved out of his line of sight. She?d think about this later, right now she wanted to dry off and find Quatre and see about getting some food. Unbidden, the recent memory of Heero?s clumsy fall came to her mind and her laughter pealed out in the woods again.
All at once Heero became aware of how uncomfortable and heavy wet clothing was as he wiped some moisture from his face. Things had not exactly gone as he had hoped.
