Red Sails in the Sunset

A young man in his early twenties tore his gaze from the book he was reading and directed his cobalt eyes to the woman twirling gaily a distance away from him; her bare feet softly padded through the warm sand of the beach, and her honey gold hair emitting a light glow from the sun.

A soft look crossed his features before the same, cold demeanor masked his real emotions. He needed to change is what she wanted from him. He agreed, only because of the pleading look she had given him a long time ago. He had, of course, because he wanted to be good enough for her. He wanted to reach her level, to show her that even he can adjust, away from his soldier ways and become what she wanted from him.

Their shaky friendship turned into a relaxed one. She would always encourage him with the small delights of a normal life. She never pushed him, and he was grateful for that. But he felt dissatisfied?incomplete?he still felt discontented. There was only one piece left to certainly complete his life.

He needed her?

?Heero!? the woman ran towards him before settling herself beside him. Heero adjusted the umbrella to shield both of them from the blazing sun, before gazing warily towards his companion.

His gaze left her and back to the book. If he stayed looking at her, he might have never torn his gaze away. ?You shouldn?t stray too far away,? he said gruffly, still without looking.

She gave him a sharp look. ?Oh come on, Heero. I wasn?t that far away. Besides, you?re not having any fun.?

?Who told you I?m not having fun??

?You?re just sitting here! That?s not what you call ?fun?!? she punched him lightly on the arm. Heero rolled his eyes and closed the book.

?Hn.? He stood up and brushed the tiny particles of sand on his shorts and offered a hand for her. The woman smiled sheepishly and entwined their hands. Heero saw the small tint of pink on her pale cheek, which made him smirk.

Both of them had decided to spend their time together away from the duties. He hesitated at first, but the pout she gave him made him surrender. So here they were today, on the beach, wasting their time together. Just the two of them; no overprotective brothers around, no braided boys lurking behind?just them, and Heero felt content.

After a round of chasing and building sandcastles (which Heero was strongly annoyed, for he really had no clue how to make one), the two sat side by side under their umbrella, watching as sails in different shades of colors glide, the wind guiding them through the blue surface of the water.

Silence passed between them before Heero started to speak. ?Do you love him??

A sad expression marred her lovely face, her eyes slowly made its way in his direction. He saw as she struggled to control the tears; biting her lip, she replied in a shaky voice.

?Heero??

?Answer me, Relena.?

?I ? I don?t know. He is kind and passionate?both of us never wanted this, Heero. The ESUN wanted us to be together since both of us were a huge impact on Earth, so they? betrothed us. I never knew that they can do this!? Relena hid her face on her hands, sobbing as reality is taking over between her and the only man she loved and will love.

Heero looked away, as his own heart twisted in a painful knot, knowing that after this day, her betrothal with another young politician will be announced to Earth and the colonies. It hurt him to the point of killing. But he made a promise to her a long time ago, and he would never break it.

?I better go, Heero. I still need to arrange some things? tomorrow,? Relena started to stand up, Heero followed suit. ?I should probably put this in my car.? She pointed at the umbrella beside them. Heero nodded and turned away, ready to leave.

He felt smooth hands on his face as Relena tilted his head to face her. He tried looking away, but her pleading look stopped him. ?Heero, I will always love you, no matter what.?

Her words triggered something inside his heart. Forgetting the betrothal, he let his emotions take over. He cupped her face and pressed his lips against hers. It was his only way to express what he really felt. Relena placed a hand on her chest before putting it over his, and he took it as a sign that her heart will always belong to him, and only him.

He released her and looked away, while Relena lifted the umbrella with one hand. ?Are you going to be there tomorrow?? He knew what she was talking about.

?I will.?

He felt her sigh sadly. ?Good bye, Heero.?

Without sparing another glance at her, he replied, ?Farewell, Relena.? Then he felt her presence was no longer there. He glanced back at her retreating form.

The sky overhead was tinted with a crimson color, with the slight shade of pink. Clouds gathered together as another perfect day wanes before them. People from their spots start to gather their belongings, with smiles on their faces as they look forward to another day on the beach. The ocean surface was also growing empty, as the sails returned to the shore, ready to be used again the following day.

Heero ignored the rest as his gaze settled on the remaining red sails as they ride into sunset before him.

To an average man walking past, he would think that the young man standing alone near the shore was cold and stoic, but a keen observer would see the distant look on his face.

A lone tear trickled down his cheek, as he reflected his changed, but incomplete life. His heart shattered as he grasped the fact that nothing can ever complete his life, because she was the only missing piece.

I don?t know ?bout you guys, but I cried after finishing this one-shot.

AWWWWWW....hmmm I wonder if the politician's hot??
Na-h!!!!
Cannot be hotter than Heero Yuy!
Wow, this was really sad, I mean it finally is okay between them so they
can admit their love and she is being married off to some guy!
This reminds me of the Teen Titans show where Starfire almost gets married
to some green mucus thing....jajajjaja.....poor Relena!
I still think Heero was a bit out of it. The real Heero would have abducted her
and taken her to some secluded place to elope! Awwww, that'd would have been sweet! *_*
Heero, fight for her dammit!!!! :x
awesome one-shot!
