Prologue

The doe stopped, twisted her ears back and listened intently. After a long moment of hearing nothing her
eyes of brown which had been roaming dropped and she continued her grazing, using her long muzzel to dig
through the thinning covering of snow to reach the frozen grasses below. She was a beautiful animal, rich
caramel in color, with brilliant white dusting the underside of her tail. She was slender from the long winter but would be
satisfying to him after he had endured the winter where game had been dangerously scarce. The Doe's Fawn was
undoubtably hidden well, protected from other predators but easily found if the mother failed to satisfy his hunger.
He watched her intently, while with each cautious step she took left a small impression behind in the snow, making it easier
for him to follow her movements if she were to bolt. She halted mid-step as a Northerly wind picked up, blowing his scent
in her direction, alerting not only her but other potential prey in the perimeter. She took a slow step back, her eyes darting
from place to place trying to locate him. He inched forward on his belly, using his forepaws to pull himself along at a
painstakingly slow pace as not to give away his position. His tongue darted forth from his mouth to lick his jaws in
anticipation. He tensed ready to pounce and devour his prey, who then decided it was too dangerous to loiter and
began to dart away. There was nothing he loved more than a good chase and was about to lunge after her when sudden
gunfire startled him. He was on all fours in an instant, his whole attention on the Doe as she collapsed onto the snow,
a bullet hole right above her left eye. He bared his teeth and his hackles rose in immeditant defense. He sniffed the air
gingerly and turned. An estimated 20 feet away there stood a broadshouldered man, clothed as a dressed-down marine in
Black Cargo pants, Brown boots and a navy jacket. His Ebony hair was windblown and messy, but his Brilliant Green eyes
were alight with a mixture of Merriment and Excitement. The man tapped his hip with his his drawn firearm, while a half
sheepish smile turned his lips upwards. "I'm a pretty good shot aint I Noventa?" he shouted jovially. A growl rose in the
back of his throat in response and he trotted towards the man with his head down low. "Its been a long time since we've
seen each other hasnt it boy?" he asked bending down to pat him on the head. He waited until his hand was mere inches
from the top of his head before snarling in warning. "Are you flippin' PMSing Nava?" He asked shoving his hands in his
pockets. "Its been a whole year since we've seen each other and you greet me by trying to rip my hand off" he accused.
Nava stood and scrossed his arms over his chest. "Obviously a year isnt long enough, otherwise you would have gotten it
through your head that I am not to be treated like some little mutt" he growled. Isen frowned, giving him a mildly disgusted
look. "Yeah a year has passed and I still havent gotten used to that freakish transformation thing you've got goin' on" he
retorted. Nava's eyes narrowed but he chose not to respond. Instead he gestured to the fallen Doe that lay in the snow
several feet away. "The first rule of hunting Redwine is if you kill it, you get first choice of the kill" he explained. Isen
blanched, waving his hands in front of him. "You go ahead Noventa, I'm not too hungry" he protested in disgust. Nava
shrugged, shaking his head. "First you ruin my hunt, then you refuse the kill." "What a rude human" he muttered walking
away. " I happen to resent that comment. You call me rude because I refuse to stoop to the level of an animal and
partake of raw, bloody meat. I like my meat cooked thank you." Nava rolled his eyes and kneeled before the Doe. "What
is your purpose?" he asked, removing his gloves. Isen plopped down beside him and fiddled around in the snow. "What do
you mean whats my purpose?" he asked. He rolled some snow into a round ball and set it gently on the ground, before
making a smaller one. "There must be some reason why you're here annoying me" Nava grumbled. With one clawed
finger he carefully made an incision from one end of the Doe's belly to the other, using his other
hand to widen the opening. Isen tilted his head to the side and rolled one last small ball of snow, setting it atop the other
two. "I present to you my masterpeice, a faceless, armless snowman!" he cried in triumph. His eyes slid to Nava, who
ignored him and started stripping the animal of its juices and meats. Isen stuck his tongue out, wrinkled his nose in disgust
and fell back in the snow, thrusting his arms out above his head. "You are one nasty dude Noventa" he murmered. "Mean
as a copperhead too" he added. "Thank you for the compliments but I'll ask once more, why are you here Human?" Nava
asked swallowing a mouthful of meat. "Mcmillian wants you back at base" Isen sighed. "I hate working with that crazy
human" Nava growled. "Anywho theres something going on there, and he wants you to come back to be a part of it." Isen
explained vaguely. 'Crazy Human thinks I'm going to be his Lapdog for the rest of my life, but he's in for a rude awakeing.'
"I refuse." Isen sat up, crossed his legs and propped his chin up on his hands. "He thought you might refuse and wants it to
be known that he will find you if you decide to run from us" he replied coolly. Nava paused and turned narrowed eyes to
regard him coldly. "Make sure that he knows I am capable of ripping his men apart with my bare hands alone, before
deciding to waste their lives in a meaningless chase" he said lowly. Isen nodded and stood, brushing the snow from his
clothes. "I'll let him know those exact words, but since you've given me such valuable advice let me give you the same
courtesy. You will be caught eventually, and punished severally, so use your better judgment before deciding to be insolent.
Come back to base with me, spare yourself the exhaustion." Nava murmered a curse causing Isen to give him a chilly
stare. "If you decide to come with me, keep your obcenities to yourself" he warned walking away. 'So the little pup wants
to play hardball eh?' he wondered. 'It could be fun' he reasoned with himself. 'Oh yeah being the obediant mutt to Mcmillian
seems like such fun. Bring out the whistle and leash Noventa' his mind mocked. "Get back here Redwine, you can carry my
luggage" Nava called to his retreating back. Isen turned, a disbeliveing look on his face. "Luggage?" he asked looking
around. Nava gave him a devilish grin and pointed to the Doe in front of him. "That is just sick!" Isen cried. "I am not
carrying that thing all the way to the car. No dead animals in my car buddy, no blood on the upholstery, nope no way."

"I cannot belive you made me carry that thing" Isen muttered angrily. "Blood on the jacket and nasty animal smell
everywhere. Its a rental too, what am i going to tell the dealership? I hope you're happy, I'm gonna smell like garbage for weeks, and I seriously doubt the blood will come out of
carpet" he grumbled. "I am very grateful, better you smell like refuse than me" Nava replied. "Yeah right, just whatever
Noventa. Put your seatbelt on." Nava raised an eyebrow and crossed his arms. "No." "Look Nava, the first rule of car
safety is always put on your seatbelt, so please put it on." "Alright dont be such a pain Isen, everybody knows safety is the
most important thing so for the sake of safety I'll put it on." Nava grabbed the seatbelt, then paused thoughtfully.
"On second thought, Who needs seatbelts when you have a pefectly capable driver in the driverseat. You are a good
driver arent you?" Isen nodded mutely. "Then it's settled, no seatbelts required" Nava said faking cheerfulness. Isen tapped
his fingers on the steering wheel in a steady rhythm and looked to his passenger with a fake smile on his face. "I'm a great
driver. In fact I passed my driving test the first time with flying color" As he spoke Isen turned the key in the ignition and
threw the gears in reverse. "You could even say I'm the safest driver you know" he assured Nava as he switched to drive
and hit the gas, sending Nava slaming back hard into his seat. He took them up a snowy hill to their left and sped down the
other side, slaming on the breaks at the bottom. Nava lurched forward, hitting his head on the dashboard and Isen
hid a smirk as Nava sat momentarily dazed, rubing furiously at his forehead. "So what do you think, pretty good huh?
Maybe good enough to do professional driving" Isen gushed feigning eagerness. "I think you're license needs to be revoked,
thats what I think" Nava muttered darkly. From the corner of his eye Isen saw Nava grab his seatbelt and lock it securely in
place. 'Isen 1, Nava 1' he thought smugly. This errand could be fun after all.

" I remember it clearly, the day you slipped away, was the day I found it wont be the same.
