Healing Chapter 8


A/N: Sorry this took so long? I?ve been debating what to do with this ~ two ideas battling me? Anyway ~ hope you like!

Dedication: Bluefire ~ thanks for the msg. Sorry it took me so long. And of course Rose who I know will be brandishing the noodle of death at me during part of this chapter.

Sometime later than night, long after the sun had left the moon alone to watch over a portion of the earth, Relena emerged from Hugh?s room. There was no peeking around the corner, no signs of shame, nothing at all in her manner that spoke of what the two had been doing.

Relena stopped mid-stride on her way back to her room and looked at the bright moon starring down at her. An inaudible sigh escaped her lips as an overwhelming sense of longing enveloped her. Turning, she went to stand where Hugh had found her hours before.

Her body and mind were tired, but they would not let her sleep and instead of being happy, she found herself feeling dead inside. A wonderful, handsome man had proposed to her, someone she could love, but all she could think of was him. He haunted her, even if he decided to stay away and send Trowa instead. Part of her ached that she wasn?t even important enough for him to have come like Trowa did. Perhaps it was better this way. If he had, she certainly wouldn?t have continued this romantic relationship with Hugh.

Her mind racing, she thought of what Hugh had told her tonight?.

**Flashback**

They had been kissing all the way to Hugh?s room, not caring if anyone saw them. Her body felt strangely tight and sensitive, as if it were expecting what was to come. Somehow he managed to open the door and lead her in. She wasn?t sure when the door closed, only remembered him giving her an intense look of desire and then pulling her onto the nearby bed. Still watching her, he slowly reached in for another kiss. While unbuttoning her shirt, a soft moan escaped her lips as she anxiously awaited his hands on her breasts. Her hands found their way under his shirt, and he shivered as they ran across the muscles of his chest. His body was warm and exciting to her. She found herself wanting to explore more than his chest. As she reached to take his shirt off, he suddenly jerked away from her, leaving her to wonder what exactly she had done wrong.

Forgetting herself, ?Damn it Heero, don?t do this to me again!? She only had realized what she said when she saw a look of confusion cross his face, but that look had quickly been replaced with understanding and then hurt.

?I?m sorry, Hugh,? was all that she could think to say. She remembered hanging her head, as if awaiting judgment, staring at the sheets below her. She was still furious with herself. Her actions were inexcusable.

He sat next to her, his shirt still partially unbuttoned. ?Relena,? she heard Hugh?s even voice say. Still upset with her outburst, she refused to look up. Small wet pools gathered at her eyes, threatening to fall. She felt his hand slip under her chin and guide her to look into his eyes. Surprisingly, they bore no hate, no hurt or anger ? just understanding.

?Relena, its okay. I understand now.?

As much as she tried, she couldn?t think of anything to say to make him feel better. She had betrayed him.

A soft voice whispered, ?I haven?t been completely truthful with you either.?

At first she thought it was her voice that whispered it or perhaps a voice in her head. It wasn?t until her mind registered that Hugh?s lips spoke that she realized that he had said that.

?Hugh??

?Relena, I couldn?t be with you tonight until I told you some things about me. I?ve betrayed you.?

Her heart flipped in turmoil as her head wondered what he could mean by that confession.

?You see, it was a coincidence that I found you that night, but I was heading to you anyway.?

?Heading to me??

?Yes. Relena I don?t know how to tell you this, but my father led up a group of survivors from the war. Mostly children of those who fought. Anyway, there are some who are angry with you for befriending the Gundam Pilots and using them as your security.?

Her body stiffened at this comment and her tears disappeared. Determined she stated, ?They fought to achieve peace.?

?I realize that Relena. Everyone knows that. But you are missing the point. They aren?t angry with the pilots, they are angry with you.?

?I see, they are upset because I have bodyguards.?

?Exactly. How can someone who preaches peace and trust, someone who wants to destroy all weapons keep security? My mother did not agree with my father, saying that you never asked for bodyguards, that ESUN had forced you to be protected.?

?That?s true. I even escape??

?Shh, Relena, I know. Let me finish. She thought ESUN had wanted you to be protected because it symbolic illustrated their goals to protect peace. Anyway, several months ago, my father?s group planned and attempted to carry out an attack on your life. Your bodyguard, Heero Yuy, shot him. He lived for a while, but due to complications died shortly after. My mother, she was very upset after he died. She became angry that Yuy shot him because he was your bodyguard and he used a weapon. She questioned her belief in you. She,? he paused, looking down at the sheets, ?Decided she was too old to lead the group, and asked me to do it. I was instructed to find you, try to get you to fall for me, and then take you to her. She wanted to ?dispose? of you herself.?

?Hugh,? she said sadly, ?I?m so sorry about your father.?

He looked at her and smiled, then kissed her forehead. ?Only you would be upset about the person that died attacking you than your own well-being. Relena, I?m the one who should be sorry. I started out deceiving you, but somewhere along the way, I fell in love with you.?

?Oh Hugh,? she sighed, warmth shinning in her eyes.

?Its funny though. I knew that there was someone else. I could see it in your eyes the first time I kissed you, like you wished I was someone else.?

?No, Hugh, you don?t understand!?

?I think I do, Relena. I know you care for me, but your heart is somewhere else.?

?No, it was, but things change. I?ve changed on this boat! Hugh, you?ve got to believe me. He doesn?t even return my feelings!?

?See, honey, you said return my feelings, not returned my feelings. You still love him.?

???

?Relena, as much as I?ve tried, as much as I?ve tried to fool myself, I have to have all of you. I don?t want to spend the rest of my life knowing I am second best. We can talk about this later, right now we have to talk about getting you off this boat, Relena. My mother plans on meeting you when we dock day after tomorrow. Some of the crew would like to kill you. We must get you off this boat. I have a plan, though??

**Flashback Ends**

She was so wrapped up in her thoughts that she didn?t notice for several minutes that she wasn?t alone. Squinting into the darkness, she saw Jeremy, standing several feet away from her, starring at her. As soon as she acknowledged his presence, he walked over to her.

?Did he tell you?? Jeremy asked.

?Yes,? Relena said quietly, knowing she could trust him.

?We leave tomorrow night.?

?Fine, but I need to tell Trowa.?

?No,? he stubbornly insisted, eyes narrowing. ?Trowa already knows. Its too dangerous for you to talk to him.?

?Thank you, Jeremy,? she said, turning to face him, but he was already gone.


Okay, I think a couple more chapters or so, and this will be wrapped up. Anyway, thanks for all those that continue to read. I hope this doesn?t bother most of you. I think 1xR are meant to be, but I have yet to see (with a couple notable exceptions ? one being Rose?s, the other that I can remember off the top of my head was written by Zapenstap) a good story where Relena has another interest besides Heero. There are several that have Relena as either a slut or Heero sleeping around. I just wanted to show that there could be legitimate competition for Heero too.

No, I understand. I just...I can't do it. I've written a 2+R and a 3xR fic, now, and I've discovered I just basically have frickin issues (I was still trying to revise my 3xR fic into a 1xR one the whole time I was working on editing it). I can explain them, but they don't really make sense.... Bottom line is, I'm glad you were going for a more realistic competition. I've seen far far too many fics where Relena's dating a new guy, trying to get over Heero, only to find out the new bf is the bad guy - and realize she never really loved him (the new bf), and he never loved her, either. Ta-dah, magically, Heero sweeps back into her life, and everything is better. -__-;;

I think it makes this story unique and more realistic to have Relena actually *have* feelings for Hugh, and Hugh to have fallen for Relena, despite his original intentions. ^___^ So, congrats. And, oh yeah, WAPISH! Where's the next chapter?
