The evening news on the television screen went from casual interest to having the undivided attention Relena when a picture of Heero was shown. "A new development in the story of the Montpelier nuclear meltdown. As millions demand answers with potential exposure to dangerous radiation levels it turns out a critical safety inspection was done by a firm with connections to husband of vice foreign minister Dorlin: Heero Yuy.
"A mysterious figure who never addresses the media, some former classmates say he was known for his temper-" The screen was suddenly shut off which came as a shock to Relena. She looked up to Heero who's face wasn't giving up much of a reaction, but she had learned to look for unconscious clues. His blood was pulsing at an elevated rate shown by the subtle reaction his neck. He very slowly and deliberately set the remote down, an act of calm focus. That was one of his favorite ways to not react: focus on a singular task. It was so subtle that to an outsider he would seem little more then annoyed, but to Relena it was telling that he was doing everything in his power to not react in anger.
Heero smirked of all things when he looked at her. "I've told you before, nothing good comes out of watching the news." Her jaw dropped just slightly, and he decided to take that as an invitation to give her a kiss. When he pulled back a finger lifted her chin. "Try not to worry too much."
"I don't know how you can say that." Despite her own anger in the situation, Relena tried to keep her dignified composure. She wasn't the one being accused of a wrong here and she wanted to be a source of strength for him. "How should we respond?"
Slowly he turned his head from one side to the other. "That is the very last thing we should do. Sharks are looking for blood in the water so it's time to stay in the boat. The media can't do anything to me as long as they don't come between us."
Relena sighed, "Heero, you know they can never do that." Heero moved to sit next to her on the couch and she reached her arms around him. His heart rate was still elevated, it told her that no matter the words he was putting on a brave face for her. "If you will please forgive me one stupid question: how did you get involved in nuclear safety?"
He chuckled in response, she was unsure if that was meant to be reassuring or sheer frustration. "My only involvement in nuclear safety was a white paper stating official government policy in the cases of reactor failures should be to prioritize a safe shutdown and bring in outside backup coolant systems just in case the primaries are compromised. As for this case, it was IT consulting. No one has said the reactor was hacked."
She sat there in silence, knowing that was the best she could give him right now. Tomorrow was no doubt going to be a bad day but as for now? For now she could focus on a singular task: making sure he knew there was one person not judging him.
