A Broken Heart

He knew he couldn?t love her, he knew it was impossible, yet here she was, asking him to love; to just try and love.

But why bother? What would be the point? At the end, her heart would be broken, and he would be to blame. He didn?t want to hurt her anymore than he already had, but it seemed he would do it again so that the public wouldn?t look down at her.

If he could he would love her, if he was another person, if he was never in the war, if he was never the perfect soldier. But he was, and everything that he learned and knew was still fresh in his head. It was impossible to erase the memories, to wash the blood off of his hands. He would forever dream of the horrors that he saw too young, and he would not bring her down to see them.

She knew what he would say, she knew all to well. She made up her mind that this would be the last time she would ask him to love her. How she just wish he would just try.

But she didn?t know why she was still asking him. Was it only because she remembered a time when she did truly love him? Did that love fade already, with so many years past? She knew that this did not happen.

The public would certainly stick their noses in it, relishing in the fact that a pacifist could fall in love with an assassin. She tried so hard not to think of it, but she already knew her duty was to the public, and he would never be able to accept that.

He knew what the look in her eyes meant. He had seen it only once before, when she realized that her decisions could have jeopardized many people?s lives. The look of shock and disbelief. Then the look of understanding and acceptance, and the wiliness to make everything right again. She knew this fight she would not be able to win; he saw it in her eyes.

He never had to tell her anything, she just knew. He didn?t know how she did it, but it never ceased to amaze him. And all he could do was have the words ?if he could, he would love her? repeat in his mind. But no matter how many times that came into his head, he knew not to step over the boundaries that he, she, and the public made. If he did, all three would crumble in an instant.

He finally said the words, the ones that would hurt her, the ones that would force her away, the ones neither wanted to be true. But both accepted the fact that this had to be done, that this was the right choice. They both knew this would insure the future, and stable the present.

But neither could leave without doing the one thing both wanted to do for so long. The kiss was sweet and passionate. All their feelings, all of their regrets towards each other was pulled into this one kiss. They knew they would never see each other again, but for those few seconds, it seemed like they were finally a couple.

They parted, looking at one another, their feelings clearly in each others eyes. It?s a shame that public opinion destroyed a true love, one that was as pure as a child. But what ever the public sees as unfit must be banished with forever, and never returned again. All of this for the sake of the public.

For the public, they turned away from each other?

Both leaving with a broken heart.

That is soooo sad..... All the emotions - the sadness, the regret, the longing - so well portrayed.
