Summery: Heero gets lost, or does he? Someone is really trying to get between them before they've even got together. But who is it really?

Lost

It was a horrible feeling. Relena didn?t cry, she didn?t hear; she only knew. And knowing was the worst thing of all. It was a horrible feeling to walk down her hallway and know what she was going to find. She didn?t even look at the pieces of clothing left on the dark hallway floor. She knew that when she pulled up and saw his car and all the lights in her house off that he would be there, hurting her beyond anything he could ever imagine. She tried to stop herself from taking the next step, she tried to forgive him before the crime happened. But she couldn?t, she couldn?t stop the inevitable from happening like it was happening now. In her house, her room, her bed.

She approached the door but didn?t turn to look in the room. Instead, she just stood there, completely visible if he should peer her way; but he didn?t. He was preoccupied. Slowly she turned towards the noises that had just become audible. A woman?s voice, her moans. And a man?s voice, his grunts. Heero?s grunts. She finally looked and found that she wasn?t as hurt as she thought she would be. She was simply numb.

Heero was there, his wedding ring gleaming on his left hand. Relena?s assistant was underneath him moaning and screaming. Relena watched them and even took two steps towards them. Betrayal wasn?t a burning feeling; it was as cold as ice. Heero didn?t seem to notice anything around him except what he was doing. It was almost as if the woman wasn?t even underneath him. Relena wondered if she even had a face.

Heero was startled to see Relena standing there staring at him. Her eyes were clouded over and her lips were the same color as her skin. He stood up quickly as if he had been burned. And that?s what he felt like, like her mere presence there while he did this was melting the flesh off his bones. She had always been able to hold him accountable without any effort. She just stared at him, never looking at the barely legal girl she had hired two weeks ago. He pulled the blanket out from underneath the girl and wrapped it around himself. The assistant gasped and crawled up to the head of the bed, where she desperately tried to cover herself.

?Relena,? Heero said very softly, as if to wake her from a horrible dream she had been having.

?Heero, don?t say anything.? Her voice had come out as steel. ?I don?t want you to feel like you are responsible for this.?

?Relena I can explain??

?No?? She shook her head. Her face finally screwed up and the tears came, but she still shook her head. Relena knew what she had to do. She didn?t have any other choice. She moved again, gliding over the floor like a ghost. She ended up on the other side of the room at her vanity. The drawer was open and, instead of a hair brush, she felt the cold, hard steel fit her hand perfectly. She pulled it out and looked at her reflection in the mirror. The princess of peace holding a weapon of death. It was out of her control.
The gun barely recoiled in her hand as the bullet flew from it, striking the frightened girl in the chest as she ran from the room. The bullet went right through her, leaving a pin prick of red in her naked chest and a bloody hole the size of a quarter in her back. Blood spattered across the wall she slumped against.

?Relena!? Heero yelled, not believing what she had done, what he had made her do. He didn?t run to the girl; she was dead, and he knew it. He had trained Relena to shoot, and she had been deadly accurate. He had made sure of that. Then he felt the pain in his head. A sharp evil noise that electrified his body in the cruelest way.

?This is out of my control,? she said before putting the dark, evil tip in between her perfect lips and fired, destroying her beautiful face. All he remembered were her words repeating in a robotic voice and the color red.

*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*

Days later, he was being kept in solitary confinement. They had covered it up. The people he thought were his best friends had covered it up. He was now the shooter. He watched as Duo, Wufei, Trowa, and even Quatre had helped them cover it up. They had put his fingerprints on the gun and compiled the story that made him the killer. The newspapers were now reading that he had snapped and killed Relena in an argument about pacifism because he hated that word, and then he had killed the assistant when she tried to break it up. His affair never even made it past that room. He knew Relena was important, but he never knew they would orchestrate a cover-up on this scale to preserve the symbol she had made herself.

He didn?t remember sleeping; he barely ate, but gladly accepted every pill they shoved down his throat. He was getting what he deserved, after all. He had killed her, just like he had promised. And, though she didn?t know it, she had killed him. Things couldn?t get any worse, until they actually did.

He guessed that he had been there for over a week when the first human face he had seen since being knocked unconscious became the most unwelcome one?Zechs. The man strode towards him without even a hint in his face that his sister had killed herself just days before. Heero was too weak to stop or dodge the big man when he knocked him across the face, feeling his bones break. He said nothing. Zechs didn?t say anything or look as though he was angry or hurt. Heero briefly wondered if this was their only family resemblance?never showing their true emotion until the very last minute.

?Hurry up and kill me,? Heero heard his voice utter, not by command. Zechs laughed at him.

?Yuy, if you kill my sister or force her to kill herself, this will be very much like what happens to you.?

?Don?t play games, just get it over with.? They had the same cheek bones, Zechs and Relena.

?And if that should happen, Yuy, everyone you know will turn against you, and your life will be over.? Only his eyes were cold.

?What does that matter?? The same nose, too, almost the same lips. Zechs watched Heero like one watches a meth addict convulse.

?Think about her life, those last painful moments of her life, someone so innocent who has already suffered so much. Would you have her suffer at your hands?? His mouth wasn?t used to smiling like Relena?s was. She loved to smile. Heero rarely smiled back though, and never in public. But when he did, was it meant only for her. She smiled for everyone. Heero couldn?t help thinking these things, just like he couldn?t stop the image of Relena?s faceless body holding the weapon of death from flooding his brain.

?No.? Zechs smiled; it was a chilling gesture. ?Excellent.? He stood, ready to leave, but thought better of it. He kicked Heero across the face, knocking him out.

Zechs exited the sterile room shaking his hand and wincing at the pain in it. He was thinking hard and did not hear Lucrezia call out his name. The only thing he thought when he saw her was how beautiful she was.

?Where have you been? I?ve been looking all over for you. We can?t find Heero. He was scheduled to get back today, but nothing has come through. Have you seen him??

?He just got back. He collapsed, and I was going to find a doctor. He?s sustained some minor injuries. Will you get a doctor??

?Yes, of course! Oh, good. Now Relena can stop freaking out. Have you seen her??

?Uhh?no. He?s pretty beat up. I don?t think she should see him just yet.? He quickly realized that there was nothing he could say to stop the process. He just hoped he had fed Yuy enough drugs to keep up the hallucinations.

?You may not think so, but she certainly does. There is no way you could keep her from him.?

?Just get a doctor, Noin!? He said loudly and harshly before leaving her there, confused and a little dazed. As she watched him go, she saw a little bit of blood drip from his right hand.

?Funny??

*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*
?Heero?? He opened his eyes and saw her. An angel without a hint of flaw in her eye. She looked so real. ?Heero, can you speak??

He just looked at her, tears forming in his eyes. Was he still being held captive, or was this his fate? To be tortured by her angelic face, which would surely only contort into a devil?s. He waited and she spoke more, like bells, he realized. For a long time they just looked at each other, and she never contorted. She remained Relena.

?Is it you?? He coughed weakly..

?Yes! Heero? It?s me. Are you okay??

?Are you real?? It was spoken so softly, she could barely hear it.

?Yes, of course I am. How do you feel?? She was about to say more when he reached out his hand and stroked her cheek. He traced a single finger from her brow down to her lips and across the bottom one. She barely moved while all this happened, afraid to startle him.

?I?m so sorry.? It was barely a whisper. She leaned in and just skimmed his upper lip with her lower one.

?Why?? She breathed

?I don?t know. Please forgive me?? He pressed his lips against hers.

?Heero, you haven?t done anything wrong.?

?I have.?

?No, you haven?t. Everything is fine. Really. I was just worried about you, that?s all. You didn?t tell me you were leaving on a mission.?

?A mission?? He kissed her once more, loving their proximity. ?I didn?t go on any mission, Relena. I? I cheated on you.? She laughed, but he could only frown.

?Heero, you?ve barely asked me out. This was our first kiss as a couple.? She looked concerned now.

?No, Relena, we were married and I cheated on you.? He needed her to know that he was sorry. He wasn?t shrinking back from what he did.

?Have you been dreaming? None of this ever happened.?

?You killed yourself? I saw you. They all framed me.?

?No, Heero. Nobody framed you; everything is fine. You left for a mission on foot and returned a week late. Everything is fine.?

?I love you, Relena.? He caught her off-guard. She was just moving away from him to call for a doctor. Her heart skipped a beat, but something inside tugged at her. Her gut feeling told her to wait until he was in his right mind.

?Heero, I?? She hesitated, fighting her heart.

?Say it back to me!? The realness in his eyes made her want it more than anything. He looked like he loved her. She cursed herself and her instincts.

?I love you, Heero.?

*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*

In the minutes it took to tear herself away from Heero, insisting that she had extra work to do in the office, the uncomfortable feeling of a bad dream coming true was churning in Relena?s stomach. She fought her way through the crowd on the hospital floor and to the garage where her car was waiting to take her home. Once she got back to the Peacecraft mansion, she found Milliardo sitting alone in the dark of the kitchen drinking blood red wine.

She stopped in the hall and looked at him; he didn?t say anything or even acknowledge that she was there. He just finished the glass and poured himself another. He seemed to be in a melancholy mood.

?Relena.? She had just decided to go upstairs to her room, where she could think, when he spoke.

?Yes, brother??

?You know that I would do anything for you??

?Thank you, Milliardo. What?s wrong??

?I?ve done some horrible things,? he said, downing the other glass. She didn?t know what to say, or what he was saying. He stood up, throwing his long platinum hair over his shoulder, and walked past her and up the flight of stairs. She watched him go before moving around to the counter where he had been sitting. She found a corkscrew, the wrapper off the wine bottle, a very sticky glass, and the empty bottle.

?What?s wrong with the men in my life?? She said out loud before throwing it all away.

Opening the door to the master room, she virtually collapsed. The room was contemporary with cool colors and clean lines. She had always hated the stuffy Victorian bed set she had grown up with. Would this become Heero?s room, too? With the way he was acting, it seemed like a definite possibility. Would he like it, or hate her messy clothes pile? It was a lot to think about. She and Heero had slowly been easing themselves into a relationship. He had just agreed to go out on a dinner date and talk about strictly normal things when he left so abruptly; in fact, he had all but disappeared. Now he was kissing her and confessing his love to her. Things were wrong, or at least out of sorts. She should accept what he had said and assume that he had been in some great peril on his last mission, but there was no report to confirm that. Her nature told her to think it all out before bed. With a clear solution, she could sleep better, anyway. It wasn?t long before she drifted off into dreams about two-faced Heeros, Milliardos in straight jackets, and Duo in women?s underwear.

*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*

Relena was actually busy for the next three days with work. She called Heero everyday from her office to see how he was doing, and she got down to the Preventor Medical Clinic to visit him at least once. Heero had always healed faster then the normal human, but had been taking some time after this last mission. Relena had often pondered about Heero saying those strange things, but hadn?t been able to give it the amount of thought it needed. Relena was not alone.

When Duo and Trowa went to go visit Heero, they were met with the empty clicking of a gun. Heero didn?t say anything but, ?I will kill you.?
Trowa merely frowned and checked his chart, while Duo rolled his eyes and tried to make light of the situation.

?At least your wonderful nurse didn?t give you any bullets.? Duo said eying his gun.

?You framed me,? Heero said, dead serious.

?Yeah, yeah. But I tied my hair up; Relena will never know it was me. Don?t worry.? Duo chuckled at his own joke.

?Why is she still alive?? Heero asked in the same tone

?No one has killed her yet,? said Trowa, still looking at the charts.

?Can?t say I haven?t tried? wait, yes I can,? joked Duo.

?Leave my wife alone, baka,? Heero said with a bit more anger

?Whoa! What did you say, Heero? Buddy, Relena is not your wife. Maybe she?d like to think that, but you barely even admit to me that you don?t hate her!? Duo said with all the patience he could muster. Yuy was not making sense.

?I knew you were dating,? said Trowa, finally putting down the charts. Duo turned around in disbelief, staring at Trowa, who didn?t look back at him.

?You all covered up the murder, framed me for shooting Relena and that assistant.?

?What assistant?? asked Duo.

?The one you cheated on Relena with,? Trowa offered. Heero?s eyes lit up in recognition; Duo?s jaw dropped.

?Yuy, buddy. I don?t know what happened to you, but whatever did, you had to have been drugged. None of this ever took place.? Duo was sufficiently shocked

?No, I saw it.? Duo dropped his jaw again at Heero?s comment

?We won?t debate that, but you never actually lived it. Look at the charts. Your body was pumped full of hallucinogens and your brain experienced some form of transmitted internal electric shock. You were captured.? Trowa showed the charts to Heero, who took them violently out of his hands. Duo?s mouth was still hanging open.

?Heero, what was the defining message you received from a person or letter just before you were recovered?? Trowa asked.

Heero though hard for a moment. The only person he remembered speaking to besides Relena was Zechs. ?Don?t kill Relena, or, no! It was don?t hurt Relena, don?t make her suffer.?

?How did she suffer, exactly?? asked Duo, feeling that he had stumbled onto something big.

?She killed herself; I made her kill herself.? Both pilots could hear the shame in Heero?s voice.

?How?? asked Trowa.

?We were married and I cheated on her. Someone doesn?t want me to marry her?? hero said without emotion.

?Yes,? said Trowa. ?I think that?s exactly it.

*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*

?So you are saying that Yuy was kidnapped, brainwashed, drugged, and now believes that he was married to Relena, and cheated on her, and watched her kill herself?? Chang Wufei asked inside the dark office. The four pilots were sitting around his office explaining things to him.

?Where were the records of Heero?s mission schedule?? asked Quatre.

?They don?t exist; they weren?t even fabricated,? said Trowa.

?Who cares if they get married? I mean, it?s not like anyone else can stand Heero?s violent mood swings. And though I love Relena, she?s kind of single minded. Has she even looked at a man other than Heero? Both of them are equally creepy and meant for each other.? Duo finished in time to find the other three just staring at him. ?What!??

?I don?t think he ever left the building,? mumbled Trowa ignoring Duo?s last comment.

?That would be incredibly ballsy,? said Duo, automatically entertaining the idea.

?Where do you get that from?? inquired Wufei.

?The room Heero was quarantined in had been in use for nine days, the exact time span Yuy was gone for,? Trowa finished.

?Who signed the release?? asked Quatre.

?It doesn?t say,? said Wufei, looking over Trowa?s report ?I can think of at least a dozen people who would hate to see their union, chief among them being Zechs.?

?True, but do you really think Zechs could do something like that?? asked Quatre. Nobody said anything, but Wufei noticed the unmistakably dark look on Duo?s face.

*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*

Relena was drowning, drowning in mundane paperwork, in mundane workdays, in a mundane life. She decided she hated that word mundane, but it was useful and applied to many things. It was a mundane walk from the kitchen to the end of the hall where her door was, until she saw him.

Heero was propped up against her door with one arm on the wall, the other on his hip. He was dressed in very tight black shirt and fitted jeans. She felt her grip on the briefcase slip a bit, but she caught it.

?Hello, Heero.? She smiled, tired but happy. He nodded to her, then opened the door for her and followed her inside. ?How are you feeling?? she asked, slipping off her blazer and hanging it up. She looked back at him in the poorly lit room. His eyes flickered. Never a smile, just a flicker of something in his eyes.

?Fine,? he said, looking back at her intently. She didn?t know what do to with him in her room. He had been there before, but always accompanied by other men or cameras. She was running out of ideas, until the most natural one appealed to her: talk.

?What are you doing here? I mean? is there something I can do for you?? She realized it was a mistake the moment those words left her mouth. The flicker in his eyes returned violently.

?Can you think of anyone who doesn?t want us to get married?? He said it as if he asked her which piece of apple pie she liked best.

?What? Heero, I?m sure there are plenty of people who would hate to see that; hundreds, probably. But why are you asking me this??

?Can you think of anyone who would drug me and brain wash me?? Heero said, cutting her words in half.

?It?s hard to think of someone who could.? Relena said slipping off her shoes and rolling down her leggings. What was left was a slightly see-through lace top and tight pencil line business skirt.

?Would Milliardo?? His tone was different, now intimidating.

She shot her head up, shocked that he would even say something such as that. She meant to object fiercely, but remembered the other night when she had the strange conversation with Milliardo in the kitchen. She shook her head.

?No.?

?Fine. I had a favor to ask.? This surprised Relena; never in all her life had Heero asked a favor from her.

?Yes, of course.?

?I was abducted from my room in the west wing. I need a different place to sleep tonight.? He was standing next to the wall by her bed in the same manner as in the hall.

?Let me wake Pagan and he will make up a guest room for you. She stood up and reached for the phone. He caught her hand and used it to pull her against his body. Not soft like she had dreamed of, but firm, toned. He didn't say anything, but ran his hands over her cheek bones and through her hair, moving her closer to the bed. She reached up to kiss him but he didn?t, he only trailed his open mouth over her jaw line. Until they hit the bed. Relena smiled. It was a funny feeling, like alcohol, good alcohol.

*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*

?Zechs what the hell is going on?? Lucrezia yelled at him in the deserted street. ?What did you do?? She shook with all the fury she felt.

In the dark, dirty part of town, Zechs was trying as hard as he could to ignore her voice. However, its volume was making it impossible. He stopped but never turned to look at her. ?You wouldn?t understand.?

?You know those boys came to me. You know what they said because you did it!? Her voice took on a pleading tone. ?If the pilots find any evidence, you know I can?t protect you; not with them working together.?

?I won?t get caught; I can?t afford it now. None of us can.? He said to her while she tried not to be affected by the pure blue of his eyes and the tan of his face.

Lucrezia went to him and felt him rest his weight against her. Tired is the feeling she got from him. People often made mistakes when they were tired.

?I just wanted to protect her. It?s not working. Lucrezia, I don?t know what to do!? His breathing was heavy, and he was depending on her more and more to hold him upright.

?Milliardo. I love you. But you know I have to put her above you . I don?t have any other choice.? Zechs collapsed against her in the rain. She leaned over him to check his breathing and smelled the wine. ?Dammit, Zechs!? She said, her tears mixing with the rain.

Far on the other side of the street in an abandoned house, there sat two men darkly watching the couple. Their enhanced senses allowed them to catch every world they spoke. One whispered to the other, ?I knew he would betray us.?

?What kind of deal with the devil did you make, Milliardo?? Lucrezia asked the now sleeping man.

?Not the devil?? Lucrezia tried shaking him awake, but began to doubt that he had even said anything to her at all.
