Dear Bleach Fans

What happens when a 15 year-old spirit-seeing boy meets up with a female death god? Just ask Kurosaki Ichigo, our hero in the popular manga/anime title, Bleach. (borrowed from About.com)

Dear Bleach Fans

Post by sitboy007 »

I doesn't seem that anyone has posted it here, therefore i will. As of March 15th, Viz has Licensed Bleach.

For all those who don't know, that means that U.S company has purchased rights to dub the anime, which could be a good or bad thing. Most of the time, the dubbing is incredibly bad and the anime is ruined for American audiences (ex. Naruto and FMA *from what i have heard from people who have seen the original*). But sometimes the dubbing is good (ex. Escaflowne and GW).

The biggest upset though, is that a liscensed anime can rarely be downloaded off the internet. Which, in the cast of bleach, is very depressing since it is an ongoing series. Therefore, new episodes will get harder and harder to find.

Hopefully American business won't completely screw over one of the best, and most popular animes out there.

Anyway, I just thought that i would inform people who didn't know.

Here's the link

EDIT: (about two hours later)

Ok, before people think that I am completely wigging out let me explain my self.

My only problem is that since Bleach is an ongoing series like Inuyasha, new episodes will be harder to find once networks start airing dubbed versions. Personally, I dont want to have to wait for episode 73 in the English version just because no one will sub it from the japanese version. If anyone can tell me where i can find Inuyasha or Full Metal Alchemist downloads please inform me because i can't find any.

As for DVDs, for someone who has no money, and can't buy an entire box set of a series, or even a single DVD for that matter, just to be able to see a show in crystal clear clarity, not being able to download is a major bummer. Hence why I haven't seen a single episode of Full Metal Panic, because my only way of watching it is through DVDs that no one have. (Dammit MediaPlay, why did you have to go under, R.I.P.)

So there's my defense that I'm NOT freaking out, but just irked because of the possibility of waiting years for a single episode.

Note: I'm basing most of this off of my experiences with cable TV anime (FMA Inuyasha, etc) where it takes months to air another set of 10 episodes and downloads are near impossible. And ok, I'm being slightly paranoid.

DISCLAIMER: Following post is not directed at the OP (sitboy007) but to Bleach fans in general who have let Teh Stupid take over.

>_<

Just because a series gets licensed in America does not mean that the series will go to hell in a hand basket.

Yays I get to buy Bleach on DVD and see crisper animation! Yays I get to buy even more Bleach merchandise!

As far as dubbing goes.... With any company it's hit and miss. I've listened to/watched some FMA and it's wasn't terrible. Same for Naruto, but then I haven't heard Kakashi's voice yet (I should probably watch my downloaded version of the dub in that case). And if they're really that bad, but you love the show anyway, buy the DVDs and choose the Japanese language with English subs. Simple as that. It's what I do for Furuba because for whatever reason I can't wrap my mind around Yuki speaking in an English voice (so sad I prefer his female seiyuu to his English voice).

And really, it's not that hard to find subs of an American licensed series. Look at Naruto. You just have to find the right source (even if that means using a different group).

But what I really want to know is why people think an American business will screw over an anime series. When did licensing become some big bad thing? They're making the damn thing easily available to us for goodness sake! Granted, there have been instances in the past where a series was ruined by some company but that's not always the case. Hope for the best and just support the series author. Is it elitism or purists? <s>Kill all the fans that get into Bleach from the dub! They aren't true fans! Damn fanbrats!</s>

Dear God, a born pessimist is being optimistic. What has the world come to?? See what you made me do! I weep for that and that only.

Note that most of what I'm saying here ISN'T directed at you Sitboy in any way, shape, or form. It's just me ranting in general because of serious bouts of stupid (thanks LiveJournal!) by Bleach fans that think, ZOMG END OF THE WORLD!!11ONE11ELEVENTY!!1 OH NOES!

And from what I read (though whether that source is reputable I don't know), Bleach was pretty much licensed by Viz from the beginning but was only recently made public.

Sometimes fellow fans make me cringe. Other times they make me giddy like a school boy. Except I'm a girl. Whatever.

For most part, I'm not really into American dubs. It's one of my pet peeves, really bad dubbing of anime, regardless of language.

But then I'm a freaking elitist when it comes to dubbed anime.

I think why most people object to licensing (other than really, really bad dubbing) is because a) no more free subs (but we all know this isn't really true) b) censoring.

Censoring of anime, or editing out of certain scenes because it's judged 'inappropriate' for American audience pisses people who are devoted fans of the series. And sometimes they get the translation WAAAAAAY off (like with some of the Naruto jutsus). In the editing, they sometimes leave out key scenes or characterizations (like what they did with CCS).

I'm wondering that too. Back in my day people were thrilled when an anime got licensed! It meant we could buy clear visuals and real merchandise! No more raggedy 6th generation copy VHS that you had to watch in total darkness because the coloring was so muddy you couldn't tell what the heck was going on! And if it meant paying $30 for one single language VHS with a mere 2 episodes on it, we paid it dang it!

Seriously. I've only been watching anime (and knowing that it was anime) for about 8-9 years, but everything's changed so much in such a short time. The overall fan attitude has gotten absolutely horrible. Me thinks the internet spoils people too much.

Really? They're not at all well hidden. I googled and got links to downloads on the first page. Get the downloading program BitTorrent if you don't already have it. And try searching again. Or join Yahoo groups or livejournal communities dedicated to a certain show in particular or sharing anime in general.

As much as I am happy that "Bleach" is licenced, it does kind of suck that I have to wait months (if not years) to resume where I left off especially since it is also going to be broadcast on Cartoon Network. Oh, well, it could be worse.

I have been apart of a discussion on a "Bleach" dubb at Gaia. Although, there are others like here who are worried that it may get a "One Peice" treatment, others aren't as worried since it will be shown on Adult Swim and that the basis of the plot is death, so it would be impossible to kiddify.

As for those of you who are looking for fansubs of licenced anime to download, may I remind you that it is basically dishonest especially if the DVD is unedited and you are doing it for keeps. Don't have the money? This may suprise you, but you don't have to buy DVDs to watch them. Many public libaries carry anime DVDs and there is always renting. Netflix has a super anime selection and can cost only $10/month. I don't know about outside USA, but I am sure a websearch can give answers.

Thanx for the Netflix idea. I doesn't seem to cost that much so I'm sure i could try it. About the public library thing i'm not sure if libraries where i live rent out anime, since most stores don't even sell it *so depressed about the death of MediaPlay*

The thing that i'm curious about is how long it will take for DVDs of bleach, in particuar, to come out. *twiddles thumbs*

I do have bittorent, but the episodes don't work with my media player *stupid generic piece of crap*, thus i have to download some whole new player just to watch episodes, and the laptop i use is not mine, thus i'm preffering not to download a bunch of misc. programs. So i'm stuck with direct downloads, so if anyone wants to point me in the general direction of those i would be grateful. :D

yes, internet has spoiled us "younger" peoples, but as far as the attitude thing, maybe if people who have been into anime for a long time tell newer fans the upside of liscencing, not downloading, etc, then maybe the attitude would change, instead of just complaining, and scolding, and bitching about how we/they don't know what we're/they're talking about.
Maybe that wasn't the nicest way to say it, but i guess i'm just kind of tired of being told that i ("I" meaning the general new generation of anime people, even though i have been into anime for 6 years), that i am dishonest and have a bad attitude about the anime industry.
This came from my frusteration with people in general, not just here.

Now that i have that out of the way, thanks for suggesting some alternatives not just attacking people for their opinions.

And if you read this all the way to this line, thank you for reading my long winded ness

Thank goodness I'm in a great Bleach LJ community. Or rather, thank goodness that I don't even read any bad replies to it in the community, since I'm a 'quiet' member. And that's all.

I am not saying never download. I am saying licensing is not the end of the world.

Anime making is a business. It needs revenue. If people want anime to continue to be made then they need to support it financially. That means either buying the licensed products or importing the Japanese ones. (And it's generally much cheaper to buy the licensed product even before the international shipping gets tacked on.) If people really love an anime, they should give credit where credit is due. And that means letting the creators and all the other staff members involved pad their pockets with the money that they have earned. Anime is their job, their livelihood. People who download everything for free and never purchase anything deprive them of their rightful income.

Licensing is a good thing because it perpetuates the anime making cycle. It pays the people who make the anime, thus allowing them to have funding to go on making more anime. Bootlegs and downloads don't do that.
