Part I: First Taste
A silent prey on the run, through the night, that?s what she was. The moon hung high in the dark, diamond twinkling sky. Full and bright, it showered down upon the young looking yet old hunter with its glory and brightness. He chased her, silently through the shadows. He turned around the same corners she did, he ran the same length of the sidewalks she did, and he ran through the same parks she did. He did all of this to just get to her. He had to get to her before his Mistress did. If his Mistress were to get to her before he, she would not apply mercy to the girl, his Mistress wouldn?t even care how important the girl was to their underworld and it?s people. But if the girl were that important, wouldn?t his Mistress make sure to take careful and extra precautions? He didn?t know. He didn?t know how his Mistress worked these days. She was always away killing to keep them alive. But, that was before? This is now.
The only sounds floating through the silent air that night were the sounds of steady breathing, metal swings creaking noisily in the light breeze that caught them, caused them to sway to and fro, and the sounds of sneakers slapping against the pavement while he chased her in silence. The girl stopped every now and then. She had to catch her breath. He decided that he was going to pounce on her and then take her out right there and then, but he just couldn?t do it. Not yet. It wasn?t time. As he stayed hidden in the shadows, all he could do was marvel at the pure beauty that radiated from the young twenty-year-old. Under the velvety fingers of the moon overhead that untainted beauty radiated more powerfully. It took his breath away and accelerated his heart. Her sea-green eyes sparkled like emeralds as she glanced over her shoulder into the shadows behind her. It were as if she knew that he was there watching her watching him. Something about that thought, about her silently knowing about him, sent chills down his spine.
This girl was different.
Lifting his wrist up, he flipped it up and tore his eyes from hers to glance down at the ancient watch. He didn?t have much more time left to dawdle around watching her. He now had two worries to worry about, his Mistress and the first rays of sunlight. He thought that the first rays of sunlight were bad enough, but then his Mistress was worse. If the first rays of sunlight got to the girl before he or his Mistress did, the prophecies would then turn from one wrong fate to another. He didn?t want that. If his Mistress got to her before the sunlight did, the prophecies would then go to the worst fate that this world could possible imagine having as the end of the world. His chest squeezed tight, his dead insides constricting painfully as he inhaled. He wrapped an arm around his abdomen and felt the blood that smeared his silver, gold and navy blue robes. He was low on energy. He had to feed soon. He had lost a lot of blood from yesterday?s fight with the Master of Darkness.
Niuhimian.
Niuhimian had been the Queen of Darkness. He had killed her by driving a scythe through her abdomen, cutting her in half. Her blood had stained everything it had touched black. Everything her black blood touched, it withered into nothing, shriveling up things completely invisible to the mortal eye. She was no more. She could not cast her wicked spell of seduction upon the mortals no more, for it was his turn to cast it. He had to make the girl one. He, however, didn?t want the girl to experience the same fate that he had gone through. His fate was coming to a close, ten thousand years later. He had seen the world change with every century. He had seen the birth of famous people and seen the death behind it as well. He had seen the birth and the death of Christ. He was there.
His red eyes closed. He leaned his head back against the building. He had to try and save his strength. He knew that this one girl was strong, but he had to be stronger for the transfusion to take place. If the transfusion didn?t turn out the way it was meant to, she would forever remain a zombie. She would be caught in between worlds. She would be caught in between the world of the living and the world of the dead. He didn?t want that fate for her. It was too horrifying for him to think about. He swallowed heavily, feeling the perspiration sliding down the sides of his face. Her soft, slow footsteps were what caused him to open his eyes immediately. He looked at the worried expression on her soft delicate face and realized the emotion that was registered in her eyes.
Fear.
She knows.
Hitomi Kanzaki let her eyes drift around the shadows that surrounded her. They seemed to be closing in on her. Was it a trick of the mind? Running her tongue along her lower lip, she ran a hand through her long golden brown hair that went to the lower part of her back. Shaking her head, she sighed heavily and turned around to head back home. Leafs rustled along the ground by her feet as the wind shifted and began to blow gusts of air from behind. Her hair flew around her face and body as she felt herself shoved forward slightly from the force. There was a set of footsteps behind her. More fear attacked her heart. Something?s not right here, I?m not alone, she thought in fear, quickening her pace.
She looked around at her surroundings and realized painfully that she did recognize this area of the park. How could she not though? She always ran through this park when she wasn?t away at some track meeting in America or Canada. A frown crinkled her brow, twisted her features up. ?Where am I? How did I manage to get so lost? Oh, no,? she moaned. She hugged her arms to her stomach and continued to pick up speed as she walked.
He continued to follow her. He made sure that she didn?t find out that he was onto her. He noticed that she was picking up speed and he was silently afraid that she would start running from him. He had seen her run. She was extremely fast. She had been no match for her opponents at the last races down in Canada. He had followed her then, as he followed her now. Silent alarms began to ring. Hitomi cast a quick glance over her shoulder. She now began to jog. She knew she should?ve stayed inside. Why had she chosen to go for a little midnight run? She always went for a midnight run. The real question was why didn?t she carry some sort of weapon with her instead? She blinked. As she blinked, two glowing red eyes stared at her in her mind. Those eyes blinked back at her. A face then came into full view as it approached her. Long silky silver hair floated around the chiseled features and prominent cheekbones. Suddenly, a set of hands came into view. The long fingers were arched, the long nails aimed for her throat as they flew for her. A twig snapped behind her. Her eyes flew open immediately. She felt faint now.
Hitomi twirled around. Her hair flew in her face as she faced the person. There he was. He stood with one foot in mid-air. A completely dead calm look kept his handsome, ancient features still. The long silver hair was pulled back in an elastic. Freed strands of silver fingers brushed along his prominent cheekbones as the wind caught hold of them and played with the hair. Red eyes glowed bright in the night. They looked at her as she stared at him in utter shock.
?Who are you?? She took a step back. Her voice trembled. It?s him, the guy from your vision.
His foot fell to the ground. He looked at her and whispered a soft-spoken curse. ?So, I take it you realized I was following you?? His voice carried a very velvety, throaty tone.
?Yes.? Hitomi took another step back. ?Why were you following me??
A smirk lifted the corner of his lips. ?It does not matter at the moment, Hitomi Kanzaki. What matters is that you?re here. Now I can talk to you.? He took a step towards her.
Hitomi shook her head hard. She drew her brows together. ?How do you know my name? I don?t want to talk to you. I have nothing to say. I don?t even know you! I have to get home now. Good-night.? She turned on her heel sharply and began to run away from him.
The man with red eyes snapped his fingers sharply. He disappeared from sight. The running clairvoyant looked over her shoulder. She couldn?t find him. He disappeared. Where had he gone? She let out a sigh of relief and brought her head around to look ahead of her. She suddenly slammed into a hard, well-developed body. Stumbling back, she fell to the ground and landed on her butt. Light spots of color circled and danced around before her eyes. She shook her head to clear them and looked up at whom she had bumped into. She swallowed as her eyes reached the red ones. It was he, the man who was following her.
?What do you want with me?? She was shouting at him now. ?I?ve done nothing to you and I?m sorry, but I don?t have any money on me if that?s what you want.?
Thaddeus Delvont? stared at the frightened expression on the woman?s face. In the moonlight, the expression looked more animated to him. He shook his head. ?I don?t want you money, Hitomi. I already explained to you that all I want is to talk to you. Nothing more, nothing less.?
Hitomi began to stand up on trembling legs. She kept her eyes fixed on his face as she swallowed thickly. She tried to push down her fear. ?I have to get home. I forgot to feed the fish and I don?t want them to die.? She quickly turned around and began to run again.
Thaddeus shook his head. He had major regrets about what he was about to do. It was now or never. His mentor used to say that. Aeria Dodente had harshly spat in his face on his first night of feeding. His catch had been a young maiden from the royal family of Louis-the-eighth. She had slipped away from the castle to be with her secret lover. Him. He couldn?t bring himself to kill her off though. He loved her too much to bring her harm. He wasn?t that kind of person. Aeria, being the impatient Martinian vampire that she had been, wrenched his screaming lover from his arms. She had dragged her into a back alley by her hair and fed from her instantly. To this very day, her screams are what haunt him. They keep him up when he?s meant to sleep. He stared after the clairvoyant and then pushed off the ground. He launched himself at her in incredible speed. He was nothing but a blur to the mortal eye as he tackled her from behind. He fell on top of her and then rolled away. He stood up and faced her. She was just lying there motionless. She was still breathing though.
Hitomi felt her head pound as it hit the ground agonizingly. She closed her eyes and then opened them to find a set of expensive, ancient looking shoes in front of her. She lifted her head and began to sit up. Backing away, she tried to stand up on wobbly legs. ?Please,? she begged. ?Don?t hurt me.?
Thaddeus ignored her pleas. He had to do this. One way or another, he was going to get this job done. He was on her in one long stride. He swiftly reached out and wrapped a hand around her neck as she went to step back from him. She was noticeably trembling. Tears made her eyes sparkle. He shook his head lightly and smiled at her. He had to calm her down.
?I?m not going to hurt you, Hitomi. Please believe me. Just listen to me and listen well.? He leaned forward.
Hitomi went as still as a marble statue. She swallowed thickly and blinked absently as she stared straight ahead at the dark trees of the park. A single tear dripped down her cheek. Thaddeus watched her neck in amusement. Her jugular vein was a bright blue as it strained against her neck. It rose and fell at a quick pace. Her breathing had sped up.
?You do not have to fear me, Hitomi, I?m not going to harm you,? he whispered into her ear. This woman reminded him of his last lover. His voice was taking on its real age of ten thousand years.
Her eyelids felt heavy. ?What are you going to do with me??
The vampire shook his head. He released the gentle hold on her neck. ?Don?t worry Hitomi, I won?t harm you. I swear to you.? His voice was as soft as a rose petal. He leaned forward and flicked his warm, moist tongue out to gently caress the soft curve of her neck.
Her life was strong as it flowed through her veins. Thaddeus felt it as he continued to stroke her neck. It felt as if it were already flowing through his veins. In about another hour, he?d be dead. His wounds were too deep. He had already lost a large amount of blood. Hitomi?s head bent back as her eyes closed. Tears sparkled on her lashes and left trails of magic on her cheeks in the moonlight. His tongue began to firmly and passionately caress her neck. At times he would occasionally suckle and nip at the flesh that enticed him. Whenever he had the short chance, he would draw the flesh into his hungry mouth. A soft moan left the woman in his arms. Thaddeus snaked a hand up her back. He tangled his long fingers into her long hair and held her head firmly in place. He gently caressed her neck with his tongue one last time. This is it.
Unsheathing his long, sharp, pointed fangs quickly, he laid the tips on top of the flesh. He could feel her life again, the precious life that he would take away remorsefully. He always felt guilty whenever he fed from his victims. He usually thought afterwards about the life they had and how much better it could?ve turned out. He shook his head furiously. I can?t think about it now, it?s too late. Hitomi made a small sound and began to melt against him. His arm wrapped around her waist held her up. He closed his eyes and growled deep in the back of his throat as he roughly pushed down onto the skin beneath his teeth. He quickly pierced the vein and then entered it with full force. The woman in his arms sucked in a sharp breath of pain and groaned loudly. She began to squirm. Her eyes snapped open and she found herself staring at the full moon that faced her. The light around her was suddenly fading into tunnel vision. She felt herself beginning to fall, slip away, but Thaddeus tightened his grip on her small waist and held her body pinned to his strong one.
He groaned lightly. The sweet, precious life of the clairvoyant entered his mouth, flowing past his teeth. It pooled beneath his tongue and slid down his throat smoothly. His whole body tingled. Hitomi was beginning to struggle against him. To keep her from struggling more, the vampire tightened his fingers in her hair and pulled hard. She screamed out and he bit down harder, the smooth flesh tearing around the two puncture wounds. Everything around him was spinning out of control. He was beginning to sway from side to side with his victim. The ground underneath his feet felt like a dock floating out on a lake, rocking up and down with the steady and yet wild thrashing of the waves that the passing boats caused.
It was almost over. The blood was beginning to slow down. The blood was starting to leave a pasty taste and feeling in his mouth. The pasty taste was all over inside of his cheeks, on the roof of his mouth, between his teeth and underneath his tongue. Thaddeus pressed the long length of her body up against the length of his own. He disconnected his mouth from her neck and held her away from her. He observed her from an angle. Her skin was a sickening, pasty gray. In the moonlight it took on the tinge of a black. Her head lolled from side to side. Blood dribbled from the corner of her mouth and from the torn skin on her neck. He watched as she attempted to swallow. She ended up gagging on her own spit and whatever blood was left.
Hitomi?s eyes were a color of fading green as she weakly brought her head around and looked at him. ?What did you do to?me?? Her words were whispered in a hoarse voice. Her vision was fading painfully.
Thaddeus wiped away the crimson that decorated his once white teeth. He ignored her again. Reaching out, he smoothed away some of her hair that lay across her forehead. Bringing his left wrist to his mouth, he dug his sharp teeth into his own flesh. He twisted his head to the side and ripped open the flesh. He watched for a moment as the dark, black fluid slid down his arm and landed on the ground soundlessly. Hitomi groaned in pain. Her head jerked to the side. She felt her heart constrict painfully. It slammed up against her ribs. She screamed out in pain, tears of blood falling from her eyes. Thaddeus directed his cut wrist over her face. He flipped if over so his blood dropped onto her lips. Another wail of agony tore past her lips as her face contorted into a mask of pain.
?Shh. It?s going to be all right. Drink this. The pain will go away, Hitomi, drink.?
Another sharp twitch in the side of her hear caused her to scream out again. The blood that dripped down into her mouth made her choke. Her arm shot out and wrapped around his outstretched arm. The wrist met her lips. She tried to use his arm to muffle her chokes and screams. Thaddeus closed his eyes in pain. He grimaced as Hitomi began to bite his arm and suck on his wrist. She drew in his supernatural blood without even knowing. His blood would flow through her veins and kill everything it touched on the inside. Externally was an entirely different story. Bile suddenly rushed up her throat as tears made her eyes burn. The pain in her heart was excruciating. It felt as if someone had reached out and squeezed it tightly, not wanting to let go. The painful squeezing continued. She tore her mouth from his wrist. She pushed it away as she weakly turned over on her side in his arms and began to try and crawl away on the ground. She was trying to get away from the sudden pain in her chest.
Thaddeus let her go, his arms leaving her waist. He began to back away from her, cradling his wrist to his chest. He waited till it patched itself up as it normally would after he was done with the transfusion. He watched through half lidded eyes as Hitomi began to crawl around aimlessly. She stumbled every now and then, the sides of her face scraping along the ground as she clumsily tried to pick herself up again. She groaned out loud as her stomach heaved. A loud cry entered the air as she felt her heart skip beats painfully and then stop altogether. It suddenly started again and began to beat slower this time. All feeling in her arms and legs left her. She slumped to the ground. She slowly turned onto her back, her eyes wide in fright as she felt her heart slow down even more.
Van, she silently screamed out in her head as she felt her heart stop again.
?Do not worry, Hitomi. It happened to me to. Your going to die, your body is going to die. Let it pass over.? He was having a hard time whispering to her.
Hitomi didn?t hear him. She wasn?t listening. She was dead. Thaddeus blinked absently and watched her. She just laid there, her head thrown back, her back arched off the ground, her mouth open in a perfect ?O?. Her eyes were wide and were faded of their sparkling green. A frown drew his brows together. He slowly began to crawl over to her with whatever strength he had left. He was almost by her side when something overhead thundered loudly. He lifted his head and watched in bewilderment as a thin bluish-white column of bright light fell from the sky. It engulfed Hitomi in it?s light. He lifted an arm and draped it over his eyes. He watched in silence as she was lifted up into the air. She floated there, bathed in the light, for a few moments before she was whisked up into the sky. The light quickly followed and then dissolved into dust that floated in the air around him.
Thaddeus fell back onto the ground. He stared up at the sky in amazement. He felt his eyes beginning to droop. He knew his time had come. It had come a lot quicker then he had thought it would though. This wasn?t right. He remembered that same light from a long time ago. He remembered that it had taken his Mistress from him. She had disappeared. He looked at the moon and the diamonds that sparkled in the sky. Breathing in the air one more time, his eyes fell shut. His head rolled to the side. Blood, Hitomi?s blood trickled from the corner of his mouth and pool around his head. He was no more. Thaddeus Delvont? no longer existed in this world anymore.
Steam hissed in the air from his body. The clothes began to slowly dissolve into nothing. His body followed quickly. His true appearance of ten thousand came into view?ashes that were caught in the current of the breeze and then whisked away into the night as if they hadn?t existed.
