Notes: This is a fic inspired by actual events in my life. Being one of the closest relatives to the now-retired Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Hilario G. Davide, Jr., I was one of those able to witness firsthand his incredible grace under pressure and how he handled himself and his position when several detractors meant to impeach him.
Synopsis: Vice Foreign Minister Relena Darlian is aware of the old adage that you cannot please everyone. So when charges are brought upon her for corruption and nepotism, and a move to impeach her is filed, she finds, at her age of barely twenty, that this is going to be the most incredible test on her resolve and her spirit. It is in this trial by fire that Relena comes to know the people who will stand by her side and get her through this.
When Duo Maxwell came bursting into her room at five o'clock in the morning with Lady Une, Lucrezia Noin and her brother, Milliardo, Relena Peacecraft knew that there was definitely something amiss.
"Relena..." Milliardo spoke to her in grave tones, his sky-blue eyes haggard. "You have to watch the news right now."
Duo looked like he was going to be sick. In the early dawn's light, he looked faintly green as he nodded. "It's really important, Lena...I'm afraid we're going to have to get ready for something big..."
The twenty-year-old girl blinked owlishly as she got up out of bed, putting on her robe. She regarded all of them with a worried glance and reached for the remote control on her side table. Turning to the corner of her room where the television was, she pressed the buttons and flipped to the early morning news.
The next few sentences that left the news anchor's lips caused her to turn pale and sink to the floor.
"In a sudden turn of events, several congressmen and members of the ESUN have submitted a petition to the United Tribunal for the impeachment of Vice Foreign Minister Relena Darlian on charges of nepotism, graft and corruption. This radical decision was reached yesterday after much deliberation and has further divided the ESUN. All petitioners have refused to comment on how they reached their decision but in a statement issued earlier by ~"
The light had long gone out of Relena's eyes as she stared in shock and disbelief past the television screen, no longer hearing the rest of what was being said.
"No..." she whispered. "It can't be..."
