Title: Beyond a Promise
Author: Morrighan
Theme: #1 ? A teddy bear with a pink satin bow
Rating: G
Disclaimer: I do not own Gundam Wing. This fanfiction has no commercial value and I am not making any kind of profit or income off of this story, or the use of characters owned by Sunrise and Bandai.
For most people, the teddy bear isn?t much. A symbol of an idyllic childhood, a cherished memory, or a gift from a special person, but the ideology behind it doesn?t go much further than that. Those sorts of memories can be easily forgotten, the stuffed animal discarded in an ever-growing pile in a dark closet when the meaning of its existence is lost. What are they but material things? Maturity often demands the acquiring of fancier, more sophisticated baubles, but even those will eventually be put aside.
Oh how the world has misunderstood and misinterpreted the fuzzy brown bear that sits on my desk. I can hardly count the number of times I have been told that ?it?s not fitting for a government official to hold onto something so childish,? and ?when you replace that bear with something more fitting of your station?? I can only shake my head at that, a quiet smile on my lips. They will never understand. Those black button eyes hold more than just a memory; they hold something more precious and indefinable than the word used to describe their contents:
A promise.
I refuse to cheapen it even further by limiting the description to that; it would be an insult to the giver and besmirch the purity of his intent. No carefully constructed word can fully encompass the true nature of the complexity and melding of so many ideals and truths into a single inanimate object. It is an apology for the pain and confusion of our first meeting, it is a representation of the years we fought for the same ideals in our own ways, it is the confirmation of his promise to protect, it is an affirmation of a love that transcends any conventional definition, for ours was never one to follow the traditional routes.
Heero Yuy cannot exist without Relena Peacecraft-Darlian, and she cannot exist without him.
We are tied together by a little brown teddy bear with a pink satin bow.
