Blissful Ignorance

So... here's a thread for Princess Tutu. Which I just started watching recently. It's quite the metatastic brain-melting little anime, and quite a bit richer and darker than the kiddie-sounding title suggests. I've only seen through episode 20 so far (so don't spoil me without warning!), but it's already in my top 10 favorite anime series.

I'd offer a summary for it... but you wouldn't BELIEVE how complicated a task that would actually be. And you don't really understand it until you watch it-- kind of like FLCL that way. It just never comes out right when trying to describe it to someone else. The most simplistic way to summarize would be, I suppose: The NeverEnding Story meets Swan Lake meets Kiki's Delivery Service. And that really doesn't tell you much about it.

But, if you like: classical music, ballet, theater, mythology, fantasy, fairy tales, books, storytelling, or the movie Dirty Dancing, you'll probably find something to like in Princess Tutu. Or love. There's a lot to love. This series really josses its audience in the sense that how you see it in the first two episodes is nothing like how you see it 10, or 20, episodes later. Every episode is better, more confusing, more weird, and more wonderful.

So... anyone else have love for this show? And remember, I haven't seen the last six episodes so please don't tell me the end if you know it. Thanks.

Ooh! My friend (the lovely Zapenstap) got the series from a girl she teaches and made me watch despite my apprehension. I've watched eps 1-9 so far and I'm finding it really enjoyable. Ahiru is very cute, sort of like Sakura, but much sillier. The storyline is great, too, and not predictable! I didn't think I'd like a kids anime about ballet, lol, but it's quite good! I love the fairy tale aspect of it.

The only thing that weirds me out is the animals. Neko-sensei, the anteater, the iguana...they're just sort of strange, but it is fairy-tale-ish.

So, I totally recommend it also and can't wait to see the rest!

One of my all time favorites. Definitely in my Top 5. I just love practically everything. The soundtrack,the fairy tales, the characters ... it's just so beautifully crafted.

Thanks, Jami! I've only seen the first arc of the series (1-13) and it's definitely one of my top ten too! I couldn't find anymore or I would have watched all of it... I actually intend to buy the whole thing and I don't buy much anime.
