Chapter One
?You know,? she muttered, glaring over at him, ?sometimes you really annoy me.?
?Oh??
Kagome Higurashi nodded absently, hoisting the yellow pack higher onto her shoulder to relieve the ache in her back. She had been planning on leaving quietly, without anyone knowing, but as soon as she had entered the fields, she had been stopped. Kicking at some stray grass, she continued to make her way across the green slopes to where the well was just behind the crown of bushes.
?Yeah, well, you?re not a walk in the park yourself either, you know,? Inuyasha commented, his arms folded over his chest, his hands hidden within the drooping sleeves of his red robes.
Kagome tried her hardest to ignore his barb, but her fingers tightened on the straps of her pack, and she grit her teeth. She wanted to be alone; she hated it when he didn?t allow her a moment of privacy. He always used the excuse that she wasn?t safe on her own no matter where she was; well, she was about to change that.
?Can?t I take a walk on my own??
?And why would you want to do that??
She shot him a glare over her shoulder. ?There?s nothing wrong with wanting to be left alone for a little while, Inuyasha.?
He shrugged a shoulder nonchalantly. Kagome wanted to heave her bag at his head. The prayer beads had been taken off long ago, so she would have no help in that area. Three years had passed since Naraku had been defeated, and most of the time she questioned herself on why she kept returning. She still had the ability to pass through the well; the Shikon Jewel hung around her neck, hidden beneath her shirt.
?You?re leaving.? It wasn?t a question.
Kagome remained silent, bracing her feet as she started to descend the slope cautiously. Inuyasha paused in step a moment, watching after her. Does she hate me that much? he wondered, and frowned at the thought. Seeing the top of her head disappear down the hill, he started after her, quickening his step, practically skipping down the hill to catch her.
?You can?t leave,? he spoke out, coming to a stop at the bottom of the hill.
Kagome casually smoothed out the front of her skirt over her thighs. The breeze flew between them as she turned to face him. The well was just a few feet behind her; if she made a run for it and hopped through, she?d be safe?until he chased after her.
?I have to,? she replied calmly, her hands clasped in front of her. She watched his robes ripple with the light wind, and reached up to push her hair behind her ear, her eyes meeting his.
?Why?? he demanded, his hands balling into tight fists at his sides. ?Why is it that every time you come back here, you have to suddenly leave??
Kagome took a step back. ?You wouldn?t understand, Inuyasha. I?ll be nineteen in a week; I have to go back. I have to start planning.?
?Planning what??
?My life.?
?Your life is fine the way it is! What else could you want?? He swept an arm out in front of him, indicating their surroundings.
Kagome bit the inside of her cheek, shaking her head. Her throat felt tight. ?This ? isn?t my life; it?s yours.?
Inuyasha stared at her in stunned silence. He grit his teeth, growling under his breath, and began to move towards her. ?You?re wrong.?
Kagome stepped away as he came to stand right in front of her. He had grown so tall; she had to tilt her head back slightly to look at him. ?I have to go,? she stammered, turning her back to him. Moving to the well, she fixed her pack on her shoulders, hunching forward somewhat under the weight.
Her fingers touched the edge of the well briefly. Unexpectedly the pack was pulled off her shoulders, and dropped down beside her feet on the ground. Inuyasha slid an arm around her waist, pulling her back against him. He buried his face into her hair, his other arm wrapping around her, his sleeves shrouding her slim body, and his hands gripped her sides. She was so slender, so small, that he could almost wrap his arms around her more then once. Kagome closed her eyes, sighing heavily, and stopped herself from relaxing into him.
He was only making this harder for her.
?Don?t go,? he whispered against her ear, having moved his head down. Kagome clenched her hands into fists at her sides, her nails digging into her palms.
It wasn?t her that he wanted?
?If it?s the Jewel you want, take it,? she whispered in a trembling voice. She felt him tense and braced herself for what was to come next.
Inuyasha growled dangerously low in his throat. His arms slipped off her waist, and he spun her around suddenly, his hands gripping her upper arms. ?Is that what you think?? he hissed, shaking her roughly. ?Is that what this is??
?How else do you want me to think, Inuyasha?? she retorted, cutting him off, her hair in her face. Reaching up she brought her hands to his chest, and pushed him away with an angry grunt, tears burning her eyes.
They both stumbled away from each other. Inuyasha quickly regained his balance. Kagome felt the edge of the well bump into the back of her legs. The sky flew swiftly over her head and, just before the darkness surrounded her, claiming her, blinding white pain exploded in the back of her head and in her eyes.
The startled cry of her name was lost to her.
