Chapter Two ? Broken Dreams
Dinner was terrible. The whole room was full of tension, at least from the pair who sat across each other. Kagome kept her gaze lowered, not daring to meet his eyes. Her mother had a cheery sort of air about her, speaking with Souta about school and his friends, while her grandfather eyed the two of them in silence, nibbling at his food. Inuyasha poked at the meat and rice in his bowl with his chopsticks, his eyes narrowed in thought, still fixed on her.
?How was school today, Souta?? Mrs. Higurashi asked, smiling over at her son. The two women sat on one side of the table, while the guys were on the other. Between them, delicious plates and bowls were set up, and the jug of juice was half-empty, a thin ring of condensation leaking out over the dark oak wood table.
Souta beamed at his mother, his cheeks stuffed with rice. He went to speak, but his mother stopped him, smiling fondly at her son, nibbling thoughtfully on the soft beef in her chopsticks.
Kagome glanced up briefly, looking across to Inuyasha. He had barely touched his food, only moved it around in his bowl. Raising her chopsticks to her mouth, her hand faltered in mid-air, the meat brushing her bottom lip. Her eyes widened. The entire house suddenly reeked. Inuyasha slowly lifted a brow in silent question, his own chopsticks halted against the side of his bowl. He growled quietly, watching the expressions on her face shift from apprehension to curiosity. What was going on?
Her chair toppled back, clattering loudly as it hit the ground, and Kagome hastily excused herself, rushing from the kitchen. Mrs. Higurashi looked to Inuyasha, watching as he had lifted his face to the air, sniffling silently, his right ear twitching.
?What is it?? she asked, a concerned look on her face. Her daughter wasn?t one to rush away from the table, unless? Souta looked to his grandfather, then to the white-haired hanyou next to him. Inuyasha could only shake his head, growling incoherently under his breath.
He, too, left the table, hurrying out the way Kagome had gone.

She had disappeared behind the house, making her way along the fence, searching for something; something she knew she couldn?t see. Her fingers trailed over the thin wooden boards of the railings that bordered around the Shrine and Higurashi residence. Abruptly she stopped in her tracks, tipping her head back. A hand lifted, shielded her eyes from the bright sunrays falling down through the open branches.
This had to be?
?Damnit,? a growl interrupted her thoughts. Hands grabbed for her, and in one swift movement, she dodged them, slipping to the side. She flattered herself back against the fence, meeting the hanyou?s annoyed glare with her own startled stare.
?What is it? What happened??
?What do you mean ?what is it?? Don?t give me that shit,? Inuyasha snarled, his stance defensive. He was prepared for anything. Kagome opened her mouth to reply, but the sight of his upper lip curling in yet another growl made her press her lips together in a tight line. ?You don?t just rush away from the table like that without a good reason, Kagome,? he went on.
Since when was Inuyasha one to preach on the etiquette of a family dinner? Kagome pursed her lips, her brows furrowing in an exasperated expression. ?I just??
?You just what?? he cut her off, straightening, and folded his arms over his chest. The prayer beads rustled against his clothing, and she found her attention drawn there for a moment.
Inuyasha slowly narrowed his eyes, watching her. ??what?s your problem, anyways??
Kagome snapped back to reality, absently chewing the bottom of her lip. Why was he staring at her like that? She brought a hand up, made a sweep over the top of her head, and breathed a soft breath of relief. ?I don?t know what you?re talking about, Inuyasha,? she murmured in an uninterested tone, moving away from the fence.
Inuyasha scowled at her back, watching as she moved away from him. She was acting so strange, and he was going to get to the bottom of it. ?Oh no you don?t,? he muttered, reaching her in two long strides, his hand reaching to grab her by the wrist.
Kagome whirled on her heel, a clenched fist smacking away his hand. Inuyasha could only stare at her. Something was different, but what? To hell with it, he thought angrily.
Gritting his teeth, he lunged for her. As if born with the reflexes, she was airborne, easily slipping out of his reach. He felt her slide past his hands, felt the rush of wind against his face. Inuyasha spun, narrowing his eyes further, and crouched to the ground before then launching himself into the air. His feet touched the roof of the shrine, and using that as leverage leapt higher into the air.
Kagome landed roughly next to the tool shed, nearly tumbling backwards as she lost her footing. With her balance askew, she wasn?t quick enough to dodge who was coming up from behind, and she found herself slammed forward against the metal wall. Inuyasha gave a grunt, grabbing her wrists and pinning them behind her with one of his own. He pressed himself into her, holding her still as she struggled, using his knees to pin her legs by digging them into the back of her thighs and his free hand pressed into her shoulder.
?I want answers, wench,? he hissed against her ear, ?and I want them now.?
Kagome bucked her body, her hands squirming in his grasp. ?I don?t have to answer anything, Inuyasha; I have nothing to say to you. Now ? get ? off of me!?
?Something is different, and I know it?s not me.?
?A smart one, aren?t you?? Kagome taunted uncharacteristically. She grit her teeth, feeling his nails dig into the skin on her shoulder.
?Don?t get smart,? he snarled quietly. She gave a soft snort. Inuyasha pressed his nose against her ear, sniffing, and frowned. ?It?s you. It has to be.?
?Will you just back off already?? She didn?t give him time to reply, as her fingers found the front of his pants. Slender digits nimbly slid under, cupping him, and squeezed firmly.
Inuyasha shouted in surprise, but his grip held steadfast. ?So, that's how you want to play, huh?? His hand moved off her shoulder, trailed down along her side, and he skimmed his fingers over her stomach.
Kagome squeezed harder, then tensed. It was no longer flaccid. Her breath caught in her throat. ?Uncle,? she breathed out sharply. ?Uncle!?
?I want answers, Kagome.? His hand slid under her shirt, his claws lightly scratching her skin. He felt the muscles in her stomach tremble under his touch. Kagome tried to jerk away, the metal warm pressed against the side of her face.
She gave a slight jerk of her head in an indication of ?no?, and Inuyasha growled softly, his hand venturing higher. Kagome squeezed her eyes shut. Her jaw hurt as she clenched her teeth together against what was expected. No, she wasn?t going to let him get away with what he was planning on doing without a fight. And with that in mind, she twisted her wrists over each other somewhat, straining the muscles in her shoulders, and forcefully pushed them apart, breaking free of him.
As his hand slid up the underside of her breast, she whirled to face him. Inuyasha was surprised, but he hid it well by scoffing, and brought his other hand up to cup her chin, his eyes narrowed and dark. Kagome sucked in sharply, staring at him with wide eyes. The blood drained from her face, and Inuyasha felt his own blood run cold in his veins at the look of sheer terror in her eyes.
Kagome slowly lifted her eyes, looking up at the sky through the thick, gnarled branches that sheltered them from above. She opened her mouth to speak, but her words were lost as she was unexpectedly yanked away from the tool shed by the collar of her sailor outfit. The explosion that rang out behind them was deafening, and the blast threw them both through the air. The grip Inuyasha had had on her shirt was gone, and Kagome cried out feeling the sharp pain sear along the right side of her back.
As she hit the ground her body bounced off, rolled through the air then rolled along the ground as she hit it once again. Jagged scraps of metal and debris flew past her, the dirt raining down hard on her body.

?Milord??
?We will finish this another time.?
The servant cowered, bowing quickly as his master swept past him in thick robes. The smell of burning wood lingered in the air, and the servant shot one last look towards the burning mass of debris that had once been a cozy residence. He bit the inside of his cheek, scurrying after his master, and as the doorway parted to reveal dark mountains and dead grass, he stepped through, stealing one last glance over his shoulder.
He couldn?t help it; the female had drawn his attention?
