Kept Promises

Sasuke stumbled slightly: he was hurt, badly. But under the cover of all the whirling people, his tattered clothing went unnoticed. No one was looking out for the deadly Uchiha Sasuke, unseen for almost three years. He had to find Naruto ? and where better than the training grounds? He was dying, and although he had betrayed him, he knew Naruto would not let him die.

Thwack! Crunch!

Yep, it sounded like Naruto was back in his ?secret? training spot.

But when Sasuke stumbled into the small clearing, it was not Naruto?s blue eyes that met his bloodshot ones.

?Sakura??

The teenage girl tilted her head and looked at him, confused.

?I?m sorry,? She said in a voice slightly deeper than the one he had left behind, ?do I know you??

It was her all right. Filled out and with hard muscle visible through her skin. She looked older, not just physically, but her eyes were harder than the petal-soft beauties he carried in his memories.

?Sakura, it?s me. Sasuke.? Could she really have forgotten him in so short a time? And yet, it had been an extraordinarily long time too. He had attacked Orochimaru just before the man had tried to transfer himself into Sasuke ? Sasuke had learnt that Orochimaru feared Itachi, and there was no way he was going to allow such a weak man control him!

But Orochimaru had not been easy to defeat, and he had been close to Konoha, believing that would stop Sasuke from using too much chakra from fear of discovery.

So here Sasuke stood, dying and looking into the eyes of his old team-mate.

?? Sasuke.? Sakura said, as if trying the word out. It sounded rusty from disuse. ?You came back.?

Sasuke did not know what to say. What could he tell her? He wanted to ask so many questions, like why was she in this place, why was she training, how did she get that long scar across her arm, what did she think of him, where was Naruto, did she ever give in to that green kid, so many questions that they seemed to cloud his mind.

?You?ve grown strong, Sakura.? Was all he could manage. She looked at him in disbelief, then smiled slightly.

?I?m a medi-nin now, Sasuke. I returned from my first mission with the ABNU yesterday, and I healed Ke-? She stopped suddenly, embarrassed. With a small shake, she straightened herself and looked him in the eye. Quite a task, since he was considerably taller than her now.

?I have grown, as you said Sasuke.? Regret coloured her tone. ?As have you.?

She was a medi-nin! Nothing could be better, she could heal him here and now, and he could leave without anyone ever knowing he was here!

?I?m dying Sakura.? He looked at her, seeing her flinch. Yes, she would heal him. Did she still love him?

?I know.? Her eyes were downcast, and she was playing with the bottom of her shirt.

?I need help. Will you help me Sakura?? Did she remember declaring her love to him that night? She had said she would do anything for him - did she regret those words?

?I will help you.? She looked back up at him, her eyes dead. ?I swore ? I swore that if I ever saw you again, I would ?? She took a deep breath, and swallowed. Tears sprung to her eyes. He always remembered her crying. Chakra surged around her. ?I will do my duty.?

Sasuke smiled slightly, glad that soon it would stop hurting. If she was with the ABNU squad that must mean that she was something of a genius. He was glad she had found her niche, and that it would help him. His mind wandered slightly; although his younger self had refused to take her with him, knowing that it would ruin her life, now she was older and able to make an informed decision.

?Sakura ?? He said quietly as she approached him timidly. ?Do you remember what you said?? He didn?t need to specify, from the way she stumbled he knew she was thinking of the same time as him. ?Do you still want to come with me?? He looked at her painfully, hoping that he had not pushed her too far. But then, she was still Sakura, and Sakura was nothing if not loyal.

?You?re ? you?re still with Orochimaru?? She asked fearfully.

?No, I have killed him. But I cannot stay here Sakura, you know that.?

?I know.? Again she said only that, her face a mask. He, so used to reading her ever emotion, felt confused. The chakra still burned in her hands as she embraced him.

?I loved you, you know.? She said quietly.

He had no reply to that. But for the first time since seeing her, he felt a small fragment of doubt enter his thoughts. What was she ?

She kissed him, feather light. Then, when he did not respond, she kissed him harder, almost violently. His eyes closed slightly, and for a moment, he forgot.

He never felt it, she made sure of that.

Sakura caught his form as it fell, motionless. Unnoticed tears slipped down her face as she help him close to her for a second, before releasing him to fall: gently, softly, quietly, to the unyielding ground.

Eee, is he dead? It's 'motionless', not 'lifeless' so he could be alive, he could be dead... I'm not sure whether to continue this or not, it could go either way I suppose. Feedback on this one is crucial, cause I need to know what people think, because I quite honestly have no idea what to do.

Should it stay a oneshot or continue?

It better be a part one!!! I INSIST on our idea of Sakura kidnapping Sasuke to make him her love slave!!! *ducks from the flying kunais throw by Sasuke*

Sakura: But... I can't... I can't do this... *pauses* I have nowhere to hide him!
Sasuke: SAKURA!!! *horrified*
Sakura: *blushes*
Cheryl: Ha! Even Sakura is turning against you!
Sasuke: -__-
Muffy: -__-
