The Wedding Bouquet

In an ornate window in the attic sits a beautiful vase. In the vase is a bouquet of lavender orchids, pink calla lilies, and white roses. On this display are three spotlights shining incessantly.
Time has dried these flowers, but their ethereal beauty still holds on. Day or night, sun or moon, the vase shimmers in all its golden glory. The oak table the vase has come to rest upon is bright and dark, no dust marring its appearance.
As the first tips of pink urge the night away, a man enters the attic. His dark hair flecked with gray is messy and just below his chin. Dark circles paint beneath his tired blue eyes. In his worn hands he carries a feather duster and gently cleans the arrangement. Straightening the pink bow gathering the stems, he pauses. For twenty years the bouquet has waited.
?Can you ever let her go?? A deep voice behind draws the man from his thoughts.
?Why do you intrude??
?You can?t dwell on the past ceaselessly. You have to move on eventually.?
?I will decide that.?
There was a pause, the air between sagging with loose tension. ?She?s dead.?
?It was never proven.?
?Heero, don?t waste the rest of your life waiting.?
?I?ll decide how I spend my life.?
The tall and lean man in the attic door turns, casting green eyes in a final glance before leaving. A silent breath escapes through Heero?s dry lips. His eyes grow dark and a tear falls past his cheeks. ?I will never stop waiting.?
He exits the room to prepare for the day. And slowly, the sun changes position and gives way to the moon. As the last rays of the day fade completely, a soft shadow moves to the flowers. Slender fingers reach out to stroke the petals. A ghost of a smile touches her lips. Her light blue eyes look towards the stairs. He is coming. She fades into a corner to watch him. He stood near the window and looked out at the city night. ?I?ll wait forever, Relena.?
She peeks out of the darkness and into the pale light. Her hand longs to caress his face, feel his kiss. Sadness taunts as he exits the broken man he had become. ?I?m here, Heero. Just not as I wish.? she whispered before disappearing.
