Title: Convergence
Author: Kendra
Rating: PG
Pairings: 6x9
Warnings: Slight angst. Introspection.
Disclaimer: I don't own GW so there!
Notes: Totally reworked fic. Original fic had OOC characters, setting issues and was set before the series. I changed the setting and made the charas in character. I barely kept any of the original fic except for some thoughts
It had been a long day and it was well into the night. They had not made it from the office back home but it did not matter to them. After a long night of writing and filing reports, they decided to make their bed on the wonderful, soft couch that he managed to move from the Peacecraft Mansion to the headquarters.
Zechs looked at Noin as she burrowed her head in his chest. He grinned slightly as he looked at her short black hair. 'Never thought that a childish prank of putting gum into Lu's hair would become one of the biggest fashion statements,' Zechs thought as Noin pushed her bangs away from her eyes.
Zechs snuck another glance at Noin. He still couldn't believe that the little girl that he had made fun of in school had grown up to be so beautiful. Time had a way of changing things. He was supposed to be asleep but he couldn?t help watching her. He still couldn?t believe that she was his.
?I was such an asshole to her,? he thought as she sniffled a bit. She had loved him unconditionally and he had taken her for granted. She had a kind soul; she was one of the few truly giving people in the world. He had always seen that in her; that was why he trusted her with his secrets when they were in school. Even though she was as knowledgeable about war as he was and as hardened as he, he sought to protect that warmth. He chose to fight her battles for her as much as possible, to protect that innocent side of her. It irritated him to no end that she had chosen to stand with him during those last days of the Eve Wars. He didn?t want to involve her in his war but he also didn?t want to shatter her illusions about him.
Lucretzia Noin had been the first one to truly understand him, to believe in him. He did not want to shatter that belief by showing her just how much of a blood-stained warrior he was. He had underestimated her like he always did. She loved him, despite his short-comings and dark side. And he almost lost her.
She said she would never leave his side again when they left for Mars but he was unsure of what she meant. He was still confused at that time; about his mission in life, about if he could ever make up for his past. She understood what he was going through; she stood by him through that. But, she was restless and she was ready for more. Noin wanted a husband, a family, permanence. He could not, did not want to offer her that and she left him for Earth. Her last words were that maybe one day they would meet again but she would leave that up for fate. Noin said, ?I?ll no longer chase after you Zechs Merquise. Its time that you make decisions for yourself. If our fates converge together again, so be it.?
Zechs frowned as he thought of that memory. He was twenty-two years old that day and he lost the woman who had been in his life for over a decade. He tried to live without her but it was a losing proposition. He had no idea how much Noin had meant to him. All those years, he had been in love with her and he never noticed it. She had taken up a major part of his life and there was a huge gaping hole from where she had left. Treize had told him that sometimes, we discover how much we need someone after they leave and/or change. He was no Treize, mourning what could have been. Two months later, he managed to get off of the Mars project and returned to Earth.
It had been weird, when it came to women, Zechs never had any problems but Noin made him earn her love again. He had to court her, truly get to know her again. He fell in love with her again, truly and deeply. Noin had told him that if they had just tried to make a relationship work right after the wars, it would have probably failed miserably. He agreed; fate had made things turn out the way they did. They both needed to grow and to be away from each other before it could truly work.
Zechs kissed Noin?s temple as she wrapped her arms around him. He considered himself lucky to have her. For many, love is a fleeting joy, something to be wished for and never attained. He knew how much it hurt not to have the one you love and he did not wish that for anyone. Fate converged their paths to where they were now one.
