Just Yesterday
Part Two

Just yesterday
Nothing was wrong
Just yesterday
We kept each other strong
Just yesterday
?Four weeks. You?ve been gone four weeks, Babe.?
Duo sank into an armchair and sighed. It was hard to grasp that she was gone. They hadn?t even said good-bye. The last thing he had said to her before the day she left was ?bologna on rye?. He hung his head at the thought.
?What went wrong? Why didn?t you tell me??
Time had slowed to a crawl as Duo mulled Hilde?s death. He hadn?t left the house-he was afraid if he left, there would no longer be her phantom presence. Heero and Relena often came over, trying to console him.
But he was beyond consolation. He wanted answers-answers no one could provide him. He looked over to the coffee table where he had placed Hilde?s promise ring. He wanted to get rid of it and crush it. Doing so, however, would erase something he didn?t want to- the fact that she had loved him.
?Duo, you have missed a week of work.?
?Ask me if I care, Heero, ask me if I care.?
?You can?t waste you life over her death. Is this the way she would have wanted you to be? You know as well as I that she would hate you for this crap you?re pulling.?
?She left behind her promise ring.?
?Her what??
?I told her I wanted to marry her someday- I just wasn?t ready. So we bought promise rings. We never- well I never ?took mine off. I found hers on her dresser. I gave it to her three years ago. It was a symbol of our love and trust.?
Heero took a seat opposite of Duo, words no longer sufficient enough to be spoken. ?There is a reason she left it behind. I just can?t figure it out.?
?Are you sure it is the promise ring??
?It is engraved with the word promise of love. I had it done especially for her.?
Silence dominated the house once again. ?Hilde?s funeral is in three days.?
This struck Duo hard. That meant he had seventy-two hours to let her go.
Heero stood up to leave. ?Call Relena and I sometime. She really would like to have you over some time to see the kids.?
?I?ll see what I can do.?

Duo stood in his room, a towel wrapped around his still wet form. His muscles were taut from shivering because he had refused warmth. Inside he felt ice and to lose that would mean to lose her even more. He opened his dresser and immediately remembered the day she had organized his clothing. There now was disorder beginning to show.
He sighed and fell onto his bed. His head flopped to the side and he saw a picture of him and Hilde. They were holding each others waists and he was licking a bit of frosting of her nose. A slight smile pulled at his mouth-boy did her cheeks get red.
He shook his damp hair, wishing he hadn?t cut it off. Hilde had begged him not to cut his signature braid but it was necessary for an undercover op. Now it just barely touched his shoulders.
Carefully he sat up, his mind turning. ?Maybe it is time to move on and continue living. Heero was right, Hilde would hate me for wasting away like this.?
He pulled a shirt on and a pair of pants. He pulled his hair into a loose ponytail and went out the door. ?Colonel Une has some explaining to do.?

?Duo, I don?t know exactly what happened. I just wanted her to go along with a discreet team to find out just how much those people knew about Zechs. There shouldn?t have been any deaths. Some said she got separated from the team. Others said she was there the whole time and they have no idea how she died. There was no exchange of fire reported and everyone else made it back okay.?
?So how do you know it was her??
?We are able to identify our own.?
?Did you test for DNA??
?No??
Duo turned and ran from the room. ?She?s still alive!? He reached his motorcycle and sped for Heero?s. After all, he had a date with a shuttle to Mars.
