Chapter 11: Unsuspecting Threat of Ren

The group arrived there at around five at the afternoon. They would have dinner at seven, so Kaname figured that she could get the group into the hot springs for a little while as an appetizer.

As soon as the group got out of the van, some of them were astonished at what they saw. A yellow-haired foreigner and a Chinese woman. They looked familiar.....Kyouko finally connected all the dots. "Mr. Weber and Miss Mao!"

"Hey girls!" Kurz put on his most handsome look. "We are back!" To peek on you all, he thought.

Melissa drop-kicked Kurz onto the ground. "Yes we are back, everyone. Please enjoy yourself here! I will be here with you guys shortly after I take care of HIM!" She was pointing at Kurz.

Everyone laughed. Kurz felt like he was a lamb led to be slaughtered.

After she gave him a Mao Bomb, she motioned to Sousuke. "Sousuke, there is something I want you to help me with. Kaname can take care of the rest of the group."

Sousuke nodded. He knew it would be about the potential mission at hand. He told Kaname to take the group to onsen and dinner first. She led the group into a lounge and told them to drop all their stuff there first.

She said, "Everyone, dinner is at seven, so feel free to do whatever you want! Girls, shall we go to onsen? And Sousuke will murder you boys if you guys peek......" Kaname was glaring at the guys.

Kyouko never liked to leave someone left out. "Kaname, what about Sagara? Shouldn't we wait for him?"

"It's OK, Kyouko. Sousuke had to take care of our rooms and dinner and all those things......it seemed that he made an awful lot of arrangements." A lie. She prepared everything, but she was not going to blow it on Sousuke.

Kyouko was satisfied. "OK then. Let's go!" She immediately took out her stuff and headed for the restroom. The girls followed.

That left the three guys: Shinji, Inuyasha, and Issei. Inuyasha immediately decided to befriend Shinji and single out Issei, since Sousuke was not around. He was determined to make this a living hell for the karate club president. "Yo, Kazama, what was that AS thing you were talking about? Again, I'm not good with these technology shit......hey let's head off to the spring now! I haven't had one in a while......" They soon left Issei alone in the room, Inuyasha making sure he took out his heavenly hakama, and Shinji explaining in detail all the parts of an AS. Inuyasha was actually quite interested in the topic. These AS things reminded him of puppets that were used by more than a few demons he had faced, Naraku most notably.

Issei did not care about the springs. He wanted to duel that white-haired boy NOW. That would have to wait. He spent the time before dinner practicing his punches and kicks. At one point he began chopping thick pieces of wood with his bare hand, imagining every piece to be Inuyasha?s head.

Sousuke entered Melissa's room. What he saw was no surprise. This time Melissa had Kurz suplexed three straight times.

"You pervert!" Melissa shouted at Kurz. She then looked at Sousuke and commanded, "Do ALL you can to keep him off the girls! Imagine how happy he will be if he gets to peek at the girls at the springs. He's happy with my COVERED ass!"

Sousuke smiled. He replied to Mao, "Perhaps next time you should set up a table underneath you guys, and then you do your Mao Bomb on Kurz, Mao."

"Not a bad idea......" Melissa thought three suplexes were only starters material. She started looking for tables but stopped. "I will spare Kurz for now. We got important business to deal with. Haul your ass up, Kurz!"

Kurz immediately got up. He did not want her to change her mind about sparing him for a while.

Melissa then took out a map and pointed to a location in the forest that surrounded their onsen. "Here is what Tessa got for us from Intel. They picked up that Gauln is around this area. What he is doing Intel still do not know. All they know is that he is fiddling with some kind of machine. Our mission will be to find out what the heck Gauln is up to! We must report to the TDD-1 first before taking any action, except if we have to act immediately. That decision will be up to us, so I will leave this to your own good judgment, men."

"Understood!" Sousuke shouted. He was dead serious now. He could not fail in anything involving Gauln.

Kurz nodded solemnly and said nothing. That was a surprise in itself to Melissa. He and Melissa both realized how much it meant to Sousuke to wipe out Gauln. For Kaname?s sake. For his own sake.

Melissa continued, "For the duration of the stay, I will arrange for us to keep watch at Gauln's location here." She pointed to a telescope she set up earlier. "Every four hours we will switch. Sousuke will not be needed for night duty after six until twelve hours after that, because he still had to protect Kaname and their classmates. Also, we don't want anyone to be suspicious of Sousuke either."

"Mao, would you want me to start my shift at 600 then?" Sousuke asked.

"That was what I had in mind. You will take two shifts from 600 to 1800 since Kurz and I may be up throughout the night. I think it is best that you take a long shift and keep watch the entire morning from 600 to 1400, and then you spend the rest of the day with your friends. It will also allow us to gain some good rest. For now that will be the arrangement. Kurz and I will take over after 1400. When Sousuke is on shift, both of us will be with the group. Whichever one of us are not on duty while Sousuke is with Kaname and them will check on the entire group from time to time, if not simply joining you guys. We also have loads of ammunition in case if we are to attack. Kalinin even allowed us to have our M9s, and I hid them in the forest for now. They would only be used when necessary. If Arbalest is needed, he said that the submarine will launch it once we request for it. That will be it. Everything clear?" She looked at her two comrades.

"Understood!" Sousuke shouted. Kurz nodded.

"Good. One more thing. There must be no wandering into the forest around us at ANYTIME alone. The three of us included. We will only go in there together and when situation dictates. I will start my shift now." Melissa sat down at the telescope. Not only was she concerned about the group's safety if they ventured into the forest, she also knew Kurz would not mind using a binocular to peek from far distance.

"And free time for me! Spring with hot girls......" Kurz exclaimed. He was back to his giddy self. Kurz spent the past hours picking out all the sentry guns and mines that Sousuke had installed a couple days ago. He also took out the military plates that were wedged between the wall separating the area of the men and the women. He thought he had them all. And if he took care of those, then he would not even have to go into the forest, which was now forbidden to go to anyway. Nothing could stop him from peeking now! He deserved this!

Unfortunately, Sousuke already found that out when he made a routine check. He decided to add a couple wrinkles to it when he found out he did not have any sentry guns left. He set up a device on the wall that will give them electric shocks if they were within two inches of the wall for more than three minutes. He also decided to wedge a mirror instead between the wall, in case Kurz found a way to elude the shock device. He did not bother doing anything about the forest if it was forbidden by the mission to go to. Not even Kurz would be that daring enough to break the rules. Besides, it could be dangerous there with Gauln around.

Routine check could save lives. The peeking villain Kurz would be in for a surprise.

While the SRT team had their meeting, the girls were all getting ready for the onsen after separating from the remaining boys. They were all in the water soon afterwards.

"Kagome, how many times have you been to an onsen?" Kyouko asked.

"A couple times. I can tell you I don't do this often. I'm glad to be here."

"Here AND with Inuyasha, right?" Kaname knew that was Kagome's weak spot.

Kagome blushed. "Uh......uh......" She squirmed uncomfortably.

"I have to admit, Inuyasha IS pretty handsome......"

Everyone aside from Kagome looked at the person who spoke and gasped. That did not come from Mizuki. They would never gasp at Mizuki if she said that. Mizuki gasped the loudest. Another competitor!?

Of all people, that came from Ren, who calmly said it as if she was the seven o'clock morning news anchor reporting about the Democratic National Convention. She smiled as if everything was normal.

Kaname had never heard Ren saying outright that someone was handsome. Never. She thought that the quiet girl could only manage to say something such as ?He is someone I respect? or some sort about her crush, whoever it could be. The purple-haired girl was quiet and often kept things to herself (at least those things, Kaname thought), although her calm face often gave a feeling that she was not hiding anything. If Ren said something, she most likely really meant it.

Kaname saw that Inuyasha could have a tough three days ahead of him. Kagome too. How would they deal with this new and most likely unwanted attention? Would it solidify their relationship or break them apart? Boy this really could qualify for some great love drama material.

Inuyasha really had his work cut out for him. Kaname thought back to what her stepmother, Oichi, said about Sousuke when he visited her family and how he attracted girls the way honey attracts bees, especially Oichi?s two nieces, and GULP, Ayame, Kaname?s own baby sister. Oichi complimented Sousuke on how he dealt with them. Let?s see how and what Inuyasha would do. Would it also make Kagome more willing to admit her feelings to him? Kaname just knew that these two would come together someday, especially after Inuyasha unconsciously proclaimed that Kagome was his woman. So bold, Kaname thought and smiled. Could it be now?

It would be interesting if Ren would attempt to make advances on Inuyasha. Very interesting. Ren was always the passive type. Though she would not admit it, everyone else knew that she was a hot commodity too at school. She was one of those girls that every guy dreamed about. Kaname was sharp enough to notice earlier Inuyasha staring at Ren for too long when they introduced themselves to each other. She bet Kagome did too.

Kagome had a worried look on her face. She realized it and immediately put her head in the water to conceal her face. Ren was beautiful, and Inuyasha was staring at her. Could it be??and what about me??did Inuyasha ever had feelings for me??I?m not beautiful enough for him?......didn't he say I was much more important than the jewel and probably everything else......these thoughts and doubts threatened to take over her mind and put her into despair.

Wait! What am I doing? I have no reason to be down like that! There must be a reason why Inuyasha was jealous at the other guys who had paid attention at me! There must be a reason why he risked his life numerous times to save me, no matter how dangerous it was! He did say I would give him another heartbreak if I was killed and he didn't protect me! Besides, Inuyasha may not like Ren??and hey, I AM kind of pretty too! I won?t lose to her! Besides, he already proclaimed that I?m his woman! Me! Higurashi Kagome!

With those thoughts, Kagome calmed herself down.

?What?s wrong, everyone?? Ren asked innocently when the silence prevailed for too long.

Kyouko finally smiled and uttered, ?I think so too??but he?s probably not my type.?

Ren replied and sighed, ?He seems quite manly too???

Another shock to everyone. It seemed Ren was really drawn to their newest male friend.

Kagome put her head into the water again. No, no, NO! Inuyasha is not going out with Mikihara Ren! He?s with her! His jewel detector! Higurashi Kagome! He will sit for her for the rest of his life! Kagome was surprised at her own reactions. Calm down, Kagome.

Kaname smiled and grimaced at the same time. Oh gosh. It looked like she did a great disservice for Kagome by bringing Inuyasha into a deadly triangle now. Rectangle if Mizuki was counted in, but then, she did not stand a chance against Ren or Kagome. Cruel but true. She had never heard someone saying how great Mizuki looked or seemed. Poor Mizuki. How would she feel now after Ren?s declarations? Probably nothing. She would only see Ren as another competitor.

But this thing would eventually occur, when a third person popped onto the scene. It happened with Kaname, and for her, it was more of a royal rumble. It was Kagome?s turn. Poor Kagome too. Kaname knew about Kikyou and how troubled the miko would still feel about her at times even though she knew that Inuyasha had put his former lover behind for the most part. Now Ren would be added into the mix. But again, it would be a do-or-die time for Kagome now. It was either one or the other.

The girls would end up talking more about Inuyasha, focusing more on their first impressions of him and his personality. Kagome took charge and spent most of the time blasting his arrogance, jealousy, and pride. The girls were not surprised, given his "somewhat" lack of manners. (?Somewhat!?? Kagome exclaimed. ?You guys are too nice!?) But she also made sure to describe Inuyasha not as a jerk, but that he was really a nice guy who looked out for others even though he would never show it. Kaname was so sure that she was about to say ?especially for me?, but the miko stopped herself just in time. Kagome herself half-hoped that her concentrating so much on describing Inuyasha?s bad traits would turn the girls away from him. It did not. Ren listened attentively while Mizuki and Kyouko kept asking questions. When asked about how they met, Kagome had to make up a story about how she was rescued and taken care of by him when she got lost during a family vacation to a very rural area a couple years ago. She did not want to talk about the jewel at all. Who would believe it anyway? Maybe Sousuke and Kaname, but they themselves have had unbelievable adventures and experiences.

Ren then asked her first question, one that Kagome was not quite prepared for. ?Kagome, it seemed that Inuyasha has dog ears more than human ears. I wonder???

Kagome?s heart seemed to have stopped. She could not say that Inuyasha was a half-demon, could she?

Kaname chipped in, ?Oh, I heard from Kagome that one of his genes mutated, causing ear to be deformed and located somewhere else??natural biological disasters. It happens.?

Kagome was impressed with Kaname?s quick-thinking ability. She must have gained them through her many adventures as well as her own cleverness. She simply nodded.

Ren nodded also. ?I see??I?m glad you brought such an interesting friend, Kagome.? She smiled.

Such a radiant smile, Kagome thought gloomily.

By the time Kagome finished, it was almost dinner time. The girls got out of the water and changed. As they walked to the showers, Kyouko nudged Kagome playfully and whispered to her so that no one else could hear, ?Kagome, you MUST have a crush on him, right?"

"Him?" Kagome knew who she was referring to and tried to fake innocence. She learned what Kaname learned a long time ago: Kyouko was a pro in probing the truth.

"Haha, come on, Kagome, you know I'm talking about Inuyasha! I bet you do, since he declared you to be his woman......" Kyouko grinned.

"Uh, uh......" Kagome uttered. She was blushing.

"Don't worry. I can tell that Inuyasha likes you too, although there is going to be some competition now. Here is a question though: Who would he save first if both you and Ren are drowning now? I bet it is you, Kagome. He's a little bit like Sagara......fiercely loyal, especially to someone important to him. I bet you are an important person to him too."

The miko felt cheerful again after Kyouko's reassurance. "Thank you, Kyouko." She now knew why the camera girl was Kaname's best friend. Kyouko came through numerous times for Kaname. She came through for Kagome too, on the first day they met.

Although there was competition for the hanyou now, Kagome still felt cheerful hanging out with these girls. They were honest, open, and considerate with each other. They cared for one another. They immediately accepted a stranger like her to their group too, and she was treated like one of their own. She was drawn to them; they are friends that she wanted to have. And for the most part, she was definitely having fun.

Issei was now chopping three pieces of wood at a time with his hand by the time dinner was ready.

Inuyasha and Shinji were in the hot spring now at about the time the girls entered. Shinji was surprised at how Inuyasha knew. The hanyou simply replied, "Smell. Their smell is overwhelming my nose."

The dog-demon had to admit, he did not mind taking a break like this from jewel-searching. The water was soothing. The scenery was wonderful. The warm scent of trees and flowers was everywhere. The air was fresh, unlike the city.

Kurz and Sousuke then came in a while later, as soon as their SRT meeting ended. Kurz was upbeat: his day has come. He did not mind if he lost half of his blood supply from nosebleed and peeking. Ah, the beauty of a woman's body. Especially a full one!

Sousuke noticed that Kurz and Inuyasha did not get introduced to each other yet. He signaled to Kurz, who was already going to the wall.

"Kurz," Sousuke said as he pointed at Inuyasha, "I forgot to introduce you to him. This is my friend Inuyasha."

The hanyou nodded. Sousuke then turned to Inuyasha and said, "Inuyasha, this is Kurz."

Kurz offered his hand. "Kurz Weber at your service!"

They shook hands.

"Now comrades," Kurz continued, "shall we have a pastime that is a guy's privilege?"

"Pastime?" Inuyasha asked, confused.

"Of course, unless Sousuke ruined all the fun since I bet he already had slept with Kaname......"

Sousuke blushed. They had not. Not yet. "Kurz......"

"Just kidding, old boy, but God knows how righteous you can be, Sousuke. But I took care of it already!"

"Really?" Sousuke tried to maintain a poker face. Success.

"Don't worry, Sousuke. Kazama, come with me and get an eyeful. Inuyasha too. We should all learn to look out for each other. I bet you do want to peek on your girlfriend, don't you, huh?" Kurz laughed.

Inuyasha finally realized what was going on. He did NOT want to get sat for peeking at Kagome.

"No, it's OK, Kurz. I'm not that interested anyway. She?s not my girlfriend anyway. I won't stop you as long as you do not peek at Kagome. IF you do......" Inuyasha licked his claws. "You are gone, buster!"

"Come on, Inuyasha, she won't find out, because Kurz Weber the expert is backing you! But I'm not going to force you, haha. That girl not your girlfriend? Lies! Anyway, come on, Kazama, Sousuke!"

Sousuke waved his hand. "I will pass. I just want to enjoy this peaceful atmosphere."

Kurz shrugged and then a thought came to him. Wait a minute. He knew I just dismantled his security system and now he is doing nothing to stop me? Not even when I get to peek at Kaname? Even better. Sousuke is lucky. That girl is HOT! He felt blood already rushing down to his groin. "Come on, Kazama, time to give your eyes a treat!"

Kurz reminded Inuyasha of one person: Miroku. They would make really great partners, that's for sure. Chills.

Inuyasha was surprised that Sousuke was doing nothing now if he had set up some kind of trap before to prevent peeking. Why wasn't he doing anything now? He looked at the soldier who finally could not suppress a small grin. Just as he thought. Sousuke would never be unprepared.

Inuyasha earlier also sensed something strange with the wall. He sensed electricity in the air. A somewhat strong force too. Someone would get shocked if they got too close to it for too long, his instincts told him. He suspected that Sousuke probably tampered with the wall a bit. He tapped Sousuke and pointed to the wall. Sousuke nodded. Affirmative.

Shinji himself was a bit more cautious. He decided that he would not join Kurz unless it was as Kurz promised: it was safe to do so. Like Inuyasha, he doubted Sousuke would be unprepared.

He made the right decision. Three minutes later, Kurz was surprised not only to find a mirror reflecting his own image and no naked girls, but himself completely dazed and wet when he was shocked by the trap from the wall and the shock propelled him into the pool.
