Just Yesterday
Part One
By: Mellie
Just yesterday
we were going strong.
Just yesterday
I could make you smile
Just yesterday
Duo sighed as he looked out at the rain. It had been three weeks since he had last saw Hilde. He wasn't surprised that she just left. After all, he did it all the time.
It was just so different without her in her home. There were pieces of her everywhere, but there was no Hilde. He just wished she would come home soon, he wasn't sure how long he could last.
'Babe, where are you?'
A shadow began to grow in the window, Duo leapt up. He was hoping it was Hilde and she was returning home. He went to the door to wait for her and give her a hug. There was a knock.
This puzzled Duo-Hilde would never knock to get into her own house. Perplexed, he opened the door. There stood a rain drenched Heero. "What's up, buddy?"
Heero seemed particularily somber. It was weird considering he usually was so stoic. "It's about Hilde."
Duo instantly straightened. "What about her, man?"
Heero walked into the living room and Duo followed, wishing he knew what was going on. Heero sat in a chair and Duo reluctantly sank into the couch. "You know that she kept her soldier status active, even after the war?"
Duo was taken aback. He shook his head. "Yeah, she didn't let too many people know. Last month, Colonel Une asked for her presence. Hilde went. Turns out any remaining soldiers were transfered to the Preventers program. The Colonel sent Hilde on a covert mission to Mars. Sounds like some of the wrong people may have found out Zechs is still ali-"
"Why are you here?" Duo demanded.
Heero was silent for a moment. "She's gone."
"Gone where?"
"She's dead, Duo. We recovered a body last night. We were wondering if you knew of any of her family..."
Duo stood, his mind unable to grasp what Heero had just told him.
Just yesterday
Everything was perfect
Just yesterday
We didn't need to cry
Just yesterday
Heero had left a few hours after his arrival. They had arranged funeral plans for Hilde as her remaining family was deceased. Heero went to put in the request and he left Duo alone to mourn.
Duo had retreated to her room. She hadn't used it much in the last year...they had even been talking marriage plans. They weren't quite ready, but they were happy together. Sometimes, Duo even forgot they weren't already married. A sad smile crossed his face.
The faint scent of her favorite perfume lingered in the air from the time she had spilt a bottle all over her bed. Her room was orderly and clean. Her closet was filled with clothes and shoes were stacked neatly on the floor. Pictures of the two of them decorated most venues and a braid made from both their hair was on her dresser.
It was there he found something that disturbed him: it was the promise ring he had given her their second year of 'unofficial' dating. She wouldn't have removed it for the life of her. Just like he didn't remove his gold band from his right hand. He gingerly picked it up, unsure of whether to be hurt or not. 'Did she know she wasn't coming back to me?'
He flinched at the idea. It hurt him to think she willingly left him. So he just deducted there must be something wrong with it. He paused to examine it-it seemed to be fine. 'Why, Babe? Wasn't it real enough for you?'
Just yesterday
There were no secrets
Just yesterday
There were no lies
Just yesterday
seems so far away
Just yesterday

So what do you think? C&C always appreciated.
