Promise of Bloom (sideficlet to Ryuu no Hikou)

This is a sidefic I've had lurking in the corner of my writing folder for quite some time. It's just a little bit of sappy fluff I wrote for Rose last year, and it's meant to fit into the timeline of my fic, Ryuu no Hikou...though it does work as a standalone ficlet. You don't need to read the greater fic to appreciate it, though it would probably make more sense.
This is meant to fit into a portion of the story that is still forthcoming. I always meant for the romance to be a secondary part of the story, but that doesn't mean it isn't there. *grins*

Pairings: It's a sappy little fluff fic for Rose. Guess what the pairing is.
Heero had never been able to understand why some people were able to find solace while wandering in a garden. Personally, he thought that they were unnecessary; places where the women gathered to gossip about such things that would only interest women, and sometimes, where children would gather to play. They were pretty, but quite useless. His mother had a large garden, back at the estate, but he never went in there.
So why did he find himself headed in that direction now? He certainly was not going there for his pleasure. He always found himself befuddled by gardens; his senses dulled by the overwhelming perfume of flowers, his mind drawn into drowsiness by the lazy buzzing of ever-present bees.
Instead of stopping, however, and returning to his quarters, the young prince continued onward, until he reached the doorway that lead into the sprawling, verdant garden...and his real quarry.
It was very nearly twilight, and he knew that her maidservant would soon seek her out, for it would be time for her to retire for the night. If he wanted to do this, it would have to be now, during a time when she was not surrounded by advisors, ladies-in-waiting, or various servantry.
She was alone now, contemplating a rosebush that was about to explode into bloom. He watched her delicately run one fingernail down the seam of a pink-tinged bud, and had to suppress a shiver at the simple sensuality of the gesture.
Be calm, he chided himself severely. She is a princess, and you are one of her soldiers sworn to protect her. He squared his shoulders with somewhat less determination than he would have liked, and strode across the green.
She looked up at him as he approached; her face seemed to light up with delight, but soon she subdued her features and averted her eyes. He frowned. He could not understand her sudden subdued nature, though it seemed to have originated since that night at the ball. Still, he banished such thoughts from his mind, and bowed stiffly. "Good evening, Your Highness."
Relena inclined her head graciously, finally raising her eyes to meet his. "Good evening to you, dragon-rider," she said in a voice that was formal yet cordial. "What brings you to wander the gardens?"
He did not answer her, but instead regarded the rosebush which she had been contemplating just moments before. "The flowers will be...quite lovely," he said, studying the buds as though his life depended on it.
The princess tilted her head quizzically, then smiled faintly as she looked at the flowers. "They were my mother's favorite," she said quietly. "I was told that the gardener cultivated them especially for her. He named them 'Queen's Promise' for their delicate scent and color."
Heero only nodded, trying to ignore the way the heavy scent of flowers tickled his nose in a most undignifying manner. He was silent for a time, trying to figure out just what to say to the princess. All I want is to see your smile once more...you have not smiled in so long...
"I-I...I'm sorry," stammered the princess suddenly. Heero looked up, surprised. Why was Relena apologizing to him? He regarded her. She had her hands clasped in front of her, and her eyes cast downward once more. "I must apologize for my behavior from before," she said, her voice quiet. "It was too forward of me. I should not have made such unfair demands upon you, or your house."
He regarded her. "You are the princess. It is within your right," he said simply.
Her hands clenched at one another more tightly. "But--"
He reached out suddenly, gently taking her chin in one hand and tilting her head up so that she was forced to meet his eyes. "Perhaps I would not mind it so much, if it were my fate to be more than simply your protector," he said. Before she could protest, he leaned down quickly, allowing his lips to brush hers.
Heero straightened, a slight smile on his lips, and turned to stride purposefully from the garden. Relena remained behind, one hand ghosting up to touch her lips, and for the first time in several long days, a smile bloomed.
