Aahh...I was extremely bored and decided to open up my old computer to see what I could find. Lo and behold, I found dozens of fanfics I've written and kept hidden away for years and years, and completely forgot about when I got new PCs.

I don't know how long it's been since I've written this one, but I DO remember taking about twenty minutes to write the entire thing. Funny, isn't it? I have half a mind to rewrite it, but I thought you'd all enjoy reading something short and simple today. ^_^

There she is, at the edge of the cliff over the river.

"Relena? Relena! Relena Peacecraft, are you here?"

The woman with the golden lantern.

The rough voice of Heero Yuy shot through the trees, his steps stumbling and anxious. He reached a clearing, where he took off his hat and threw it precariously aside.

She holds it high, waiting for her lover to come back to her.

For there she was, the object of his desire. She was in his dreams when he slumbered, and in his mind when he was awake.

She didn't seem to have heard him. Her back was to him, the arm bearing the lantern raised high above her head. Her golden hair and her patched brown cloak rippled in the midnight breeze.

"Relena," Heero Yuy murmured, taking a step closer. "You must have seen my ship. I saw your light, and I came. I've returned, Relena. Look upon me."

Slowly the woman with the golden lantern turned. Her face was streaming with tears.

"I saw your ship," she whispered. She held the lantern out before her, and Heero had to squint at the bright light illuminating his face. "You are Heero? No...you are but an illusion, a trick of the moonlight...just like the other times..." She gasped to keep in her tears, to no avail. Drops of crystal fell upon the ground, and she was about to turn back towards the water when he cried out,

"I am your Heero. I am real. There is no moon to trick you tonight."

Indeed, it was a night of darkness, when the moon turned its face away. The lantern fell from her hands and shattered on the rock, sending shards of heavy glass spewing across the ground. The maiden ran into her lover's arms, crying tears of indescribable joy. He, in turn, pressed her close to him, as if she'd disappear if he but loosened his grasp. Pushing herself away, the maiden raised a trembling hand to his rough, unshaven face, as if making sure he was real.

"Oh Heero," she breathed, "it's been so long."

"I know, Relena. Forgive me."

"I have not waited at this spot for ages just to hear an apology, Heero Yuy!"

And with that he pressed his lips against hers, his shaking hands tangling themselves in her golden hair. She wrapped her arms around his neck, her hands clawing at his cloak.

"Oh, Relena," he pulled away long enough to say, "I love you!"

"And I...I love YOU, Heero Yuy! I love you!"

He kissed her again, and angels in heaven rejoiced as two figures filled with an ageless love were finally reunited. The heavens opened up, and the couple faded away in a beam of misty light.

And thus ends the story of the woman with the golden lantern. She waited at that same exact spot every night for three hundred years...waiting for a long lost lover who sailed away to find a new world, and wrenching herself away from the land of the living to be able to wait forever. She hadn't known he died at sea, but she was so sure he'd come back for her that she haunted the cliff for centuries. But he promised her he'd return, and he did, finally.

Oh, that was perfect! That was exactly what I needed right now. I loved the myth-like quality of it, and how you didn't know she was dead until the end. I've always really enjoyed old stories about sailors and their true loves and ghosts and what not, and that was just great. Just great.
