The phone rang as Relena Darlian was toweling off. Heaving a mighty sigh, the President of the Earth Sphere Unified Nation walked quickly to the monitor, her eyes skimming across the number on the caller ID to judge whether or not it would be appropriate to answer the call scantily clad. Her brain immediately registered the familiar digits and she accepted, turning her back to the monitor.
?Ms. President.? Heero?s familiar monotone made her smile secretly to herself.
?Good afternoon, Heero. To what do I owe the pleasure of this call?? She absently combed fingers through her damp hair as she spoken to her bodyguard, barely catching the towel as it started to slip.
Heero?s voice sounded slightly choked as he responded. ?I wanted to go over the schedule tomorrow, but??
?Oh, that?s okay Heero. I?m almost certain I?ve been informed of the final changes. All my morning meetings are in office tomorrow with the exception of my meeting with the Colonial Foreign Minister, to which my escorts will be Po and Chang. From there, I go to the panel in the Trades and Commerce building for a run down on the economic situation of former Africa and the discussion of probable points of action. From there, back to the office for some paperwork, and then after work we?re going to the electronic store so we can get you a vidphone.? Relena wrinkled her nose as she finished reciting the vigorous schedule.
?About that vidphone Relena??
Becoming frustrated with her battle to keep the towel in place, she let it slide to the floor and kicked it away, securing the curtains so the gardeners wouldn?t look up and see more of their employer than they expected. She thought she heard a squeak come from Heero?s end of the connection. She chalked it up to the antiquated device he was using.
?What about it, Heero? And don?t try to convince me you don?t need it,? She chided as she walked to her desk to retrieve a proposal she wanted to review once she was dressed. ?You use that broken down, audio only piece of junk out of paranoia. You don?t have to hide your face from people anymore. And if you?re going to start on that ?coworkers shouldn?t be consorting after office hours?, forget about it. We?re going after work and that?s that.? Relena absent-mindedly rocked to the soft music crooning from her radio. Hands smoothed over her skin, trying to disperse of the water droplets her still wet hair had dripped.
?Th?that?s not?what I was going to talk to y-you about.? Heero?s voice sounded thick, and she heard him swallow heavily as she pushed aside the drape of her burnished gold hair. Relena raised an eyebrow. Heero tongue-tied? Now she was intrigued.
?Well, if it?s not that, what is it??
Heero cleared his throat several times before he could speak. ?I wanted to inform you that the trip to the electronic store tomorrow would be unnecessary.?
?Oh?? Relena replied, half-paying attention as she looked around the room for the towel she had so carelessly thrown aside. ?Why?s that??
?Because I went today and purchased a vidphone myself.?
?Well that?s goo?? Relena?s words were cut short as Heero?s words abruptly sunk in.
Slowly she turned to face the vidphone screen, her mouth dropping open as Heero?s flushed face looked back at her. He didn?t even try to hide his eager appraisal of her nude form.
Relena was rendered mute and numb. She considered this a blessing, since she was certain that if she *could* produce noise, it would be a shriek, and had she had the option of feeling, it would be burning mortification.
There was a long silence.
?Relena??
?Yes, Heero??
Another silence.
And then an awed ?Marry me.?
The connection went abruptly dead as Relena threw her paper weight at the display screen.
