(Mononoke) Why Does He Smile?

This is a Princess Mononoke fic. Half poetry/half prose/half writing. Or so I think....
* And I wrote this before I looked up the actual lyrics of the song. Sorry.

?Why Does he Smile??

?When the morning comes, I see you??
*

The sun rises and yet the forest still sleeps

It dies and it grows.

The cycle of life

Throughout all this insanity there is only one thing that I?m certain of.

Him.

At night I belong to the forest, I belong to the wild. The wolves.

At day I wander because I know he is there down below.

Why does he help them?

Damn his kind heart.

Me? I?m needed at home, the trees need me?

But I want more.

Why doesn?t he just stay with me? It?d be so much easier

Then traveling back and forth across the balance

He doesn?t hate what he is. He is the one who has accepted his fate.

Of what had become of him

The scar will remain.

But if he doesn?t hate,

Then why must I?

I want to believe that I?m not human, the girl of the wolf tribe

Then why does Ashitaka?s hushed murmurs call my heart?

To speak softly towards me,

To save my life,

To hold me?

Why does he smile when he looks upon my face?

~*~

?San!?

He calls me early in the morning.

?San, where are you??

I stand up and follow his voice, emerging from the growing trees.

?I?m here, Ashitaka.?

He smiles when he sees me. He always smiles. Why?

I know he loves me, even Mother had told me that

But he is human, and I am not.

We come from different lands; we MUST be different from one another.

There are ties that bind us to our own?

I want to tell myself that we?re different, we just are

It had to be that way.

~ * ~

?San, what?s wrong??

Ashitaka gets off his elk and comes towards me, the Wolf Princess.

He looks into my eyes and somehow I find that I can?t face him.

Looking down at the grass, I ponder why I feel so vulnerable right now.

Will the human always be inside of me?

His curse had been lifted, his hands are free?

He holds me in his arms, comfortingly.

He lifts my head up with his hand upon my chin.

He smiles at me once again, perhaps we can win.

?Nothing. Nothing?s wrong, Ashitaka.?

I'm a big fan of Princess Mononoke. You can't believe my joy to see a fic here on BI!!! *does happy dance* I don't think San will ever come to terms with her..human side. Good thing she has Ashitaka! :D

I've always wonder what would happen to him after the whole Spirit of the Forest situation. I would think he'd get hitched with San but she has to be with her wolves. I wonder how Iron Town would run if he were in charge. And what of the Samurai that were attacking? Would they have returned to take the town? Hmmm...I smell more fan fiction. :D

Well, I always thought that Lady Eboshi would be the one to put Iron Town back upon its feet, only that their main source of trade would be something else. Maybe they could use the river/lake for power? That is, if they're not already.

As for San, that's girl's stubborn. She'd probably live in the forest while Ashitaka stays to help repair the city but I'm not sure whether he'd like running Iron Town. He seems like a down-to-earth kind of guy. After the whole demon-warthog-bullet incident, he might not be fond of impure minerals.

The samurai who attacked would probably come back, thinking that with the city in ruins, they could overtake the citizens easily. Too bad Lady Eboshi lost her arm... it could have been useful as a missile.

*ooh, bad mental thoughts...*

:D Ah, fanfiction.

Very good fic. I love Princess Mononoke as it is the first anime movie I'd ever seen.

Yes, I luv the couple! I agree that San will stay with the wolves, and that Ashitaka will help the town get back on its feet, so to speak. But Calla mentions a good point that he might not like staying there afterwards. I'm a romantic, so I see Ashitaka returning to San. Probably live there most of the time while going to the town now and then. Sort of like an outside guardian.

*hi-fives Bookworm* Us romantic types gotta stick togeter. :-P :D

I never seriously thought about Ashitaka returning to San and living with her in the forest, if that's what you mean. Since he grew up in a close-knit community, he might miss having people around and not just the forest spirits. Of course, those little tree dudes were pretty cute.... in an oddly, freaky sort of way. And we can't forget the monkeys and San's wolf brothers and the boar tribe. (Although I'm not sure whether any survived to continue their line)

But I can see where you're coming from bookworm. Too bad there's no official sequel to the movie, we'd all go run to see it.

I've never read a Mononoke-hime fanfiction.

WOOT! But it was great--short, sweet, to the point. I like the way it was narrated, sort of in a first-person present tense. SanxAshitaka is so incredibly cute but also has a kind of undercurrent of sadness, I think.

And he does smile an awful lot, doesn't he?
