Meadows
Relena Darlian sighed deeply. She leaned back in the small sunning chair with pleasure. Languid movements were the only things that stirred her body now. A few minutes before, she had shed her coat and shoes, clothed only in a white tank top and her rolled up pants. She was the epitome of relaxed.
It had taken almost a week of planning to manage this venture of solitude. Her brother thought she was in a meeting, and the people at the meeting though she was with her family. A smirk twitched those lips as the young Vice Foreign Minister thought of Zechs?s future outrage. She would be chewed out, of course, and Relena didn?t blame him for doing it, but still? It was her life.
Relena closed her eyes, easily shoving off any desires to sing; she hated her voice. Everyday she talked and talked and talked, and now the thought of it disturbing the beauty around her gave her a bitter feeling in the pit of her stomach.
The gentle twitter of birds graced her lovely ears. Insects buzzed and swam around her, lazily brushed away with a gentle forearm or finger. Sunlight played across her face, making the skin feel tight and heavy. Relena turned her head idly to allow the other side of her face to receive the caress of sunlight. Ooh, it felt good.
A smile graced her features when she heard the loud, impatient twittering of a nest of birds. They reminded her faintly of the government officials she had to settle down every dreary day of her life. A picture of them in the chicks? positions flashed through her intellect. A larger smile spread when that notion slipped to mind.
Soon, she would have to go back into the dusty world of pens and talk. In fact, Relena was amazed that her brother had not found her by now. Pushing these thoughts away, Relena continued her scrutiny of the noises around her.
Relena did all this with closed eyes. She traced the movement of her large dog, Zero, with her ears. The ferocious animal trotted back and forth around her, posting a guard. She knew he loved it outside, in the fields surrounding the Sanc Kingdom palace. And she could always tell her brother she was not alone.
Zero trotted forward to her, and Relena held out a hand, which he sniffed gently. When Noin had been told what kind of dog had been chosen for Relena?s security, she had thrown a fit. Relena had been a little intimidated at first, but she met the animal and fell in love. She trusted the dog more than most of the people she knew.
When Relena was approached by anyone new, Zero would immediately throw a fit until she called him off. In fact, she was the only person who could control him. Relena?s face twisted to a smirk again when she thought of all the unwanted male suitors who were scared off by her canine companion. Of course, Zero didn?t do all the scaring either.
The twittering of the nest overhead caught and held Relena?s attention again. A deep sigh wiped the smirk off her lips. Zero lay down next to her; his warm mass was reassuring. Those baby birds? Relena wanted children. God, how she longed to carry a child. Ever since she was a teenager, Relena had looked forward to having children, probably more than the getting there.
Another deep sigh racked her body. The only man she would ever have a child with was in her life??but not in the way she wanted him to be. A bodyguard, a protector??that was all he was. Or all he thought he was anyway. Not that her body could take carrying a healthy baby either. No, she thought, I?ll probably grow up to be an old auntie.
She stretched luxuriously against the chair, now resigned to the fact. Confirming her thoughts, she spoke aloud, interrupting the beautiful nature around her. ?No, I?ll be old and gray with no family, no friends, and no love. Not that I could have a healthy child anyway. No. All I?ll have is you, Zero.? She patted the animal?s head.
?What do you mean by that?? came a deep baritone.

Heero watched the girl??woman??lying there in the field. She was in the open, completely defenseless, almost naked to attack??and God, she was beautiful.
He sat in a tree, watching the dog and the woman and anything else that moved, for that matter. His anger had dissipated as he watched Relena. He took notice of the lips twitching up and down and the occasional toss of a limb.
There was a soft sputter of his walkie-talkie. Heero raised it to his lips. ?Target not present in 05 sector.?
He then clicked off the machine, continuing his silent reverie. Heero felt guilty for watching her; she seemed too good to just gaze at like he was. The sensual curves of her body beckoned him, and he had to press any unwanted, unholy, unhealthy thoughts or desires of her to the back of his dark mind.
She was too good. It just wasn?t possible for someone that good to care about him. Heero was a little relieved when Relena had not shown her usual joy at seeing him. She was always polite, of course, but now she didn?t try to engage in conversation with him or anything of the sort. But his relief was completely drowned out by his disappointment. Bitter disappointment.
He watched her calmly for about half an hour, taking note of everything about her. Then he heard her speak. ?No, I?ll be old and gray with no family, no friends, and no love. Not that I could have a healthy child anyway. No. All I?ll have is you, Zero.?
For a moment, he thought she had said ?Heero? instead of ?Zero? and wondered in shock how long she had known him to be there. A faint sigh of relief shook his body as he dropped silently out of the tree when he realized she was referring to the dog. The words teased his mind and he wondered at them. Unbidden, his deep voice spoke. ?What do you mean by that??
He had apparently startled her, but Heero saw she remained where she was when he approached nearer. Zero started up, not growling; he knew Heero, but he wanted Relena?s to give permission before the Gundam Pilot drew closer.
She hushed him, and Zero returned to his former position, closing his eyes. ?I mean that there are probably very few men who would ever suffer my lifestyle enough to stay with me.?
He stiffened at the ?very few men?, feeling jealousy course through his veins. He drew level with her head and looked down at the face, frowning to see her eyes still closed. She was always good at masking her facial features, but Relena?s eyes were always transparent. But now he couldn?t know what she was feeling.
His voice was steady. ?Would you take them anyway??
?No, I guess not.?
?Do you want children??
Heero knew this question had startled her because she visibly jumped. ?Well, it?s my nature as a female,? she said at last.
?No, I asked if you wanted children, not if your nature as a woman made you feel that way.?
In any other circumstance, she would have burst out laughing at his statement. It sounded odd coming from his stoic lips.
?Yes,? she answered truthfully.
?Why don?t you think you?ll have any??
Relena frowned ever so slightly. Why was Heero acting so curious? She took a deep breath, refracting his question. ?I don?t really see anything right now regarding that aspect??or lack thereof??of my life. Do you??
Heero?s frown deepened. ?God dammit, Relena! You always dodge them! Answer my questions!?
Her eyes flew open. She sat up, matching his anger. ?Why? You never answer mine!?
He gaped. She rose stiffly. Zero did as well. The dog placed himself between Relena and Heero. The latter just stared at her. The stare wasn?t hard or angry. Actually, it looked frightened almost??like a child asking for forgiveness.
Then Relena sighed. She sat back down and covered her face with her hands. ?Because I don?t think I will ever find a romantic interest. And I don?t know if my body would hold out anyway.?
?Your body??
?Yes, my body.? Her voice was muffled by her hands. ?Nothing a few weeks in solitude wouldn?t solve, but yes.?
He was silent. ?So??? Her voice interrupted his thoughts???are you going to take me back now??
Heero folded is arms. ?No.?
Relena blinked under her hand. ?No??
?No.?
?Alright! Who are you and what the hell have you done with Heero Yuy??
He did not smile. ?I am Heero Yuy.?
Relena sighed. ?I know you?re Heero Yuy, but why this sudden change in manner??
?You should be able to have children, if that?s what you want.?
Silence greeted this answer. Then, ?Not that it would matter anyway. I?ll never have the right person for that.?
?You have many suitors.?
Relena rolled her eyes under her lids. ?Well, even if I did have a child, it?d be miserable.?
?Why??
?What kind of a mother do you think I would make?? Her question was bitter and sharp.
There was a moment of silence, then, ?A perfect one.?
?You see, Heero,? When she used his name, he had to take a breath to steady his nerves. ?That?s your problem: you think everything about me is perfect.?
?Everything is? Except your disregard for your own safety.?
Relena laughed, this time truly. ?I do believe you made a joke.?
?I?m serious.? His tone matched his answer.
She was standing suddenly. ?Why can?t you see???? Then she grabbed her head against the dizziness that assailed her. Heero?s arms caught her swiftly, and they slipped the ground with Relena in his lap.
?That I?m just human,? she whispered against his chest.
Heero was getting that guilty feeling again.
Heero swallowed. He waited for Relena to get up, to move, to apologize, to be angry or embarrassed because of their position, but she didn?t. And he didn?t want her to.
?God, I love it,? she murmured. Except, he thought she said: ?I love you.? His breath caught in his throat. Relena raised her head, concern apparent in those orbs.
?Heero??
He just stared at her. Then he kissed her. She was shocked, almost too shocked to respond. Almost.
They drew apart and he said those words she had wanted to hear from his lips ever since she had first seen him on that beach. ?I love you.?
Relena laughed, kissing him again. ?I love you.?
So each was completely contented now, kissing and touching and sharing??each secure in their own mind that the other had spoken those words first. After a few minutes, they broke apart, smiling sheepishly at each other. Then Heero caught her chin. ?Maybe a few weeks in seclusion would be a good thing.?
And her eyes widened when she grasped the full meaning of what he mentioned. A few weeks in seclusion with Heero??alone??making children. She smirked in a very uncharacteristic way that set him on fire. ?Yes, I think so.?
