Inevitably Predictable [4/?]

Yay! Another chapter, as promised. =) A caveat: as the semester is winding down, I am inundated with lots and lots and lots of papers. The inevitable predicament of being an English major. Anyway, this tangent does have a point. =) So, I might not be able to update for a while... <ducks incoming rotten tomatoes> BUT! I promise to have this story finished before this year... before December is the goal. We?ll see. I might procrastinate and stay up until 4AM to finish writing this story. ;D
Many thanks to my wonderful beta reader, who in her sleep-deprived state, still edits my story. She rox the sox of any fox! ;D
Lastly, this chapter explains what happened that night?the night between Kagome and Inuyasha, when Kagome received a shoulder injury. The cliffhanger from Chapter 3 will be addressed in the next chapter. Just a little suspense to spice things up. ;D
Chapter 4?Damn the Consequences
Stifling a yawn, Kagome tiredly pushed her bike as her feet were dragging her farther behind the gang in front.
?C?mon Kagome, we?re getting behind the others,? Shippou cried out from the basket. ?I know you?re tired, but we?re almost there. I know you can do it.?
Giving a small smile to the cute, ever encouraging demon, Kagome doggedly gathered up her strength and with new resolution pushed her bike faster to catch up with the others.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
?Is Kagome still with us?? Sango asked worriedly. She, Mikoru, and Inuyasha were considerably ahead of Kagome.
?Yeah, she?s fine,? the half demon quickly responded.
Staring at Inuyasha with disbelief, the demon hunter wondered how Inuyasha could possibly know Kagome?s welfare, when the half demon didn?t even bother to look back and check for sure. ?How do you know? You didn?t even glance back!?
?Hmph.? Inuyasha arrogantly said. ?I didn?t need to.?
?What? Miroku, talk some sense into Inuyasha. Predictably, he doesn?t get it.?
Pondering about the situation at hand, Miroku suddenly realized how Inuyasha instinctively knew. ?It?s okay, Sango. For Inuyasha to smell her scent, she has to be nearby.?
Letting out an ?oh,? Sango straightened her head back towards the road to hide the smile she could feel forming upon her face. She bit her lip to suppress the smile, all the while, thinking, how cute. Inuyasha tries so hard to hide the fact that he cares for Kagome in ?that? way. Who knew underneath that gruff exterior, he was so sweet? Knowing better to press the half-demon any further, Sango was content with the answer. However, the lecherous priest, living up to his reputation, pressed the matter further.
?So, Inuyasha. What does Kagome smell like? Ramen? Strawberries? Flowers?? the priest rattled off, while the half demon gave the monk a look that said idiot.
?OO! I know! You dirty dog! You can smell her?? Miroku never finished his sentence, for his face was millimeters from Inuyasha?s very pointy and sharp claws. Flashing Inuyasha a look of innocence, Miroku, with a huge grin overtaking his face, walked over to Sango and threw his arm around her. ?Hey there, Sango?why don?t we walk ahead and find that village?? Dropping his voice, the priest smoothly said, ?That way, we can leave those two crazy love birds together, alone. Plus, we can have some time alone too?we can discuss when you?ll bear my children. Or better yet, how we?ll get to that point,? the priest mischievously said in a husky voice.
Her cheeks flaming with embarrassment and anger at the ?suggestion,? the demon hunter delivered a swift right hook to the lecherous monk?s cheek. Tossing her head and muttering a ?hmph!? Sango walked ahead and left behind the owner of a new bruised cheek.
?I was kidding!? the poor priest rubbed his cheek, ?Well... anyway! Wait up Sango!? Miroku scurried after the demon hunter.
Sighing at Miroku?s inevitable lechery and Sango?s predictable punch, Inuyasha continued towards the village, sniffing the air constantly to ensure Kagome was still behind him. While sniffing Kagome?s scent, Inuyasha?s nose wrinkled at the next scent it picked up. There was only one deduction?it had to be a...
?DEMON!?
Halting in his tracks, Inuyasha darted around at Kagome?s warning. Making out Kagome?s outline in the dark, he saw a spider demon, poised and ready to attack. ?Watch out Kagome!? Inuyasha yelled.
His warning came too late. The spider demon sensing Inuyasha was nearby quickly attacked Kagome. Biting the girl?s shoulder, the enemy lodged its teeth into Kagome?s soft flesh. Screaming in pain, Kagome let go of her bicycle. She yelled, ?Jump, Shippo!? which the little demon obliged. Reaching her left hand back to grab her bow, she, with Shippou, managed to knock the creature off. Hissing, the now annoyed monster prepared to attack Kagome again. ?Oh no, you don?t!? Kagome commanded. Stretching her hand back to retrieve an arrow, the girl suddenly yelped. Her shoulder was in excruciating pain. She could feel the pain spread from her shoulder into her lower back and fingertips. Looking at the spider demon again, Kagome yelled, ?Inu??
Before she could finish, the half-demon swooped in front of her. Brandishing his claws, Inuyasha easily sliced the spider demon in half. Keeping his claws drawn, Inuyasha scanned the area, in case any more demons might appear. Satisfied there were no other demons, Inuyasha turned around to check on Kagome. ?What the hell were you do---ahhh..? the half demon started to berate Kagome, when he looked at the poor girl, sitting on the ground, grasping her bleeding shoulder, her face and body in tired resignation.
?Here, let me see,? Inuyasha gruffly said.
Kagome reluctantly let go of her grip. The wound wasn?t serious, thank goodness; it just needed to be bandaged and left alone for a few days to heal completely.
Hearing a shuffling of feet, both Kagome and Inuyasha looked up to see Miroku and Sango running towards them.
?We heard the scream. Is everything all right? Oh wow... is she okay?? Both Miroku and Sango looked at Kagome with grave concern.
?I?ll be okay,? Kagome answered in what she hoped was a cheerful tone. ?I just need to clean my wound and bandage it, and it will be as good as new! So, don?t worry about me. Did you two find the village??
?It?s right past this hill. It?ll take but a few minutes to get there. There?s a house we can stay in.? Miroku responded.
?Well, let?s go! Just let me get my bike. Oh no...? the poor girl looked at what used to be her bike. Since she had let go of her bike, it had fallen onto a rocky shoulder. Luckily, the damage was minimal, as only the front tire was flat, and one of her handlebars was twisted. ?How am I supposed to push my bicycle now?? the girl wondered aloud.
?Don?t worry about your stupid bike.? Inuyasha harshly said.
?But, I broke my last one, just a week ago! I can?t keep breaking bikes at this rate!? although injured, Kagome still was able to argue.
?Look, you?re going to get worse if you don?t get your shoulder treated. We need to get you to that village.?
?But, how? My bike is broken.?
?Forget about the bike! I?ll carry you, alright? Geez!? With that, Inuyasha motioned to pick up the girl.
?But, my bike! And, I?m dirty. I don?t want to get you dirty, Inuyasha!? the girl protested.
?Oh, to hell with your bike! Look, what good will you be if you get worse? That?ll be more time we lose in finding the jewel shards. Just let me carry you!? Ending the discussion, Inuyasha gingerly picked up the girl, making sure not to move her shoulder. Leaping into the air, Inuyasha hurried to the village.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Giving one more glance at the screen, Sango shrugged her shoulders and laid down onto the soft covers. When everyone else had reached the village, Inuyasha ordered Sango and Miroku to fetch some water and cloths. Then, Inuyasha, upon receiving the materials, closed the screen door, threatening anyone to come in and bother Kagome.
**flashback**
?Are you going to take care of Kagome?? Sango asked him worriedly.
?Feh! What do you think I?m going to do!?? the half demon yelled.
?Lay off, Inuyasha. You?re not the only one concerned about Kagome. We just wanted to make sure.? the half monk rubbed his eyes as he tiredly defended Sango.
?She?ll be fine. I got it under control.? With that, Inuyasha stepped into the room and closed the screen tightly shut.
?Well, looks like it?s just you and me, Sango, and there?s one bed. How about??
?How about you stay over there, and I promise not to hit you.? Firmly pointing to the opposite side of the room, Sango looked at the door and wondered what was going on in the half-demon?s mind.
In the background, Miroku mumbled, ?How come Inuyasha gets some, and I don?t. Not like I would fondle Sango all night.. well, maybe I would..?
**end flashback**
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Closing the screen softly behind him, Inuyasha stared at Kagome. The poor thing had fallen asleep, exhausted and worn out from the fight with the spider demon. ?C?mon, Kagome, wake up,? the half demon gently nudged the girl. Her eyes wavering, the tired girl got up and sat on her knees, holding her right arm at a 45 degree angle, accessible to the half demon?s doctoring. Directly sitting in front of her, as to align the right side of his body with her right, Inuyasha began to work.
With a cloth dipped in water, Inuyasha cleaned the wound, being careful not to drip any water on Kagome. Satisfied the wound was cleaned, Inuyasha then took some of the bandages from Kagome?s bag and wrapped her shoulder snugly.
Tucking the ends of the bandage into the wrap, Inuyasha suddenly felt a warm pressure against his shoulder. Kagome had fallen asleep. She had leaned towards her doctor, and her forehead was now resting on his shoulder. ?Kagome....wake up,? the demon tried to push Kagome off. No response from the sleeping girl. She was so dead tired, nothing would have woken her up.
Sighing, Inuyasha racked his brain as what to do. I shouldn?t wake her up because she?s so tired and peaceful. But at the same time, if I don?t wake her up, she?ll freak out and yell sit at me for God knows how many times.
Slightly frowning, the half demon sat deep in thought. To clear his thoughts, he inhaled deeply, when he caught a whiff of the delicious scent from the girl?s hair. She always had this smell around her?that freshly showered smell, with tons of girly odors all mixed together to create this very feminine and exotic scent. Whenever he got a whiff of her scent, the half-demon always felt so refreshed. Her scent was like rain, washing over him, enveloping him, causing him to lose his mind. Staring down at the shiny mass of black hair, Inuyasha swallowed hard. She would?t know.. right? It wouldn?t hurt, right? Oh, to hell with it! Bending his head down, Inuyasha sniffed Kagome?s hair. Drinking in all the delicate, yet rich, smell, Inuyasha felt his mind become very airy and free. His heart started to beat a little faster, and his stomach began to churn, as if hungry for more than just a smell.
Shaking his head, Inuyasha struggled to raise his head away from Kagome?s hair. He succeeded, thanks to a lot of self control. Once again, sighing with a feeling of loss he could not explain, Inuyasha resigned to get the girl off him, before he?d something completely reckless.
Of course! the half demon suddenly came up with a brilliant plan. If I lie down on my back, we?ll both be a lot closer to the ground, in fact, just a few inches. Then, I will slide to the left, so Kagome can lie down on the floor completely, and she will only have to fall a few inches instead of a few fee, if I just moved away now. That way, she won?t wake up, and I can escape.
Lying down as slowly as he could, Inuyasha was succeeding in step one of his plan. About half way down, however, Inuyasha could feel Kagome rolling off him. Flinging his right arm out to soften the fall, Inuyasha caught the still sleeping girl. Bringing both of them down to the ground, Inuyasha wiped off the beads of sweat from his forehead. His plan was almost complete. All he had to do was slide his right arm out from underneath Kagome?s head.
Unfortunately for Inuyasha, Kagome suddenly turned over in her sleep, her body cuddling with the demon?s. If that wasn?t a bone thrown in the half demon?s plan, Kagome then threw her arm over Inuyasha?s waist in a possessive hold. Her leg also followed suit, swinging itself over the demon?s..
Wide-eyed, Inuyasha laid on the ground, at a loss of what to do. There was no possible way he could get out of this situation, unless he woke up Kagome. But then?how would she act if she saw her limbs entangled with his?
How did he get into this situation? What had possessed him all of a sudden to want to take care of Kagome?
Slapping his face with his free hand, Inuyasha tried to make sense of the situation. Why the hell did I bandage Kagome?s wounds? Sango and Miroku would have done it. Well, no way in hell would I allow Miroku near her, but what about Sango? She could have easily done it. I guess, I feel so guilty. Kagome got hurt, and it was my fault. I couldn?t protect her in time. I should have smelled that demon so much earlier or at least got there before the demon attacked. Damnit.
Looking down at the sleeping girl, her face relaxed and content, her body very warm and soft, Inuyasha released a small smile. At least, she?s doing okay now. I had better not move her; I?ve already caused her enough pain. I?m so tired too. I?ll just sleep for a few hours, and then I?ll try to come up with a new plan. With that decision made, Inuyasha, giving one last look at the girl in his arms, closed his eyes.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gently stirring, Kagome?s eyes flickered, her eye lids half open. Staring at the ceiling, she mumbled, ?Where am I?? Suddenly, Kagome was very aware she was lying next to something very warm and solid. Moving her hand, Kagome felt cloth and the promise of muscle underneath it. Realization hit upon the now very much cognitive girl. She was sleeping beside Inuyasha. In fact, the two were entwined.
In a panic, the girl began to sweat. Stay calm, Kagome, stay calm. Think, think, think. Don?t yell or you?ll wake him up. Think, think, think!!! Her brain screaming at her, Kagome very slowly remembered all the events leading up to this point:
Being attacked by a demon. Having Inuyasha carry her to home. Her shoulder hurting.
Looking at her right shoulder, she saw it was cleaned and bandaged. She vaguely remembered Inuyasha telling her to sit up, so he could bandage the wounds. Feeling a smile on her face, Kagome thought, how sweet of him.. to clean and bandage my wounds.. Is this the same Inuyasha? He sure has been a lot nicer to me lately. He hasn?t been calling me a ?bother? or other terms like that. In fact, he?s been really sweet and caring, in his gruff sort of way.
Turning her face to her left, Kagome slightly nudged noses with the face besides hers. Their noses touching, Kagome held her breath, for she and Inuyasha were breathing on each other. Staring directly into his peacefully, sleeping eyes, Kagome took the time to allow her gaze to wander over each feature of the half demon?s face. He looked so innocent and carefree when he was sleeping; his features were so cute, when he wasn?t scowling. Soaking in all the inner contours of his face, Kagome let her eyes travel down to his lips. They were nicely shaped, not too big nor small. The few millimeters between the two pairs of lips emitted a strange heat, inviting Kagome to bridge the gap. Biting her lower lip, Kagome wrestled with herself. Should she or shouldn?t she? Oh, to hell with it! Placing her lips gently upon Inuyasha?s, Kagome had no intention of kissing Inuyasha; she just wanted to know what it would feel like to be kissed by him.
Inuyasha?s eyes flew open.
