Ohohoho. I'm up far too late, but I was inspired!

Usual disclaimers.

I'd put all the necessary stuff in italics, but I'm in a terrible rush to sleep. Forgive me!

The costume party had seemed to Heero to be a useless way to spend a holiday. Getting dressed up was pointless and embarrassing and he wanted no part of it, but Relena had personally asked him and, well, it was terribly hard to tell her no under even the best of circumstances. Therefore, his grumbling now was mostly at himself and his lack of will. Of course, even Wufei had been conned into this rubbish so he could console himself with the fact that every last one of the Gundam pilots, his friends, would suffer right along with him. As he entered Relena?s mansion he passed by some children who were scarfing down candy as if it would evaporate tomorrow. They promptly began to run and scream in circles around him before diverging onto a different course.

A flushed Peter Pan tried to chase after a small blond fairy that was trying to keep up with the pack with great difficulty. Heero?s didn?t need his keen observational power to determine who that was. The flushed man in green tights started as he saw Heero.

?Ah! Heero! I?m so glad you came. As you can see the party?s is just starting to pick up. All the kids are going to go trick-or-treating soon, but Dorothy insisted I catch Alicia and give her this wand.? Quatre seemed to be trying to explain this all very fast, as if to detract attention away from his tights. ?You should on in and grab yourself some punch or something.? He continued after the laughing Alicia while Heero stifled a smirk and made his way into the grand ballroom.

A robed Duo, hair loose, practically attacked Heero.

Heero practically broke Duo?s arm.

?Geez, man, you have no sense of humor do you?? Heero observed that the grim reaper costume was rather well put together considering. The plastic scythe was lying on the floor where Duo had dropped it when Heero had twisted his arm. Hilde was close behind, in a cheerleader outfit and covered in blood ? a rather odd looking zombie.

?You should know better than to even pretend to attack Heero by now, Duo.? Hilde admonished as Duo massaged his aching arm, making a bigger deal out of it than he needed to get the responding coo from a concerned Hilde. She gave Heero a look up and down. ?Nice costume. Where did you find it??

?Around.?

?How do you like the costumes Duo and I picked out? That baka,? she said pushing at Duo?s shoulder a little. ?always wants to be death every single Halloween. I can?t believe him sometimes, I mean he doesn?t even want to give anything else a try.?

?I stick with what works.? Duo gave his unconquerable smile. ?And I get a scythe. How great is that? Why would I give this up?? He made as if he was going to attack Hilde, and she pretended to be afraid. With a squeal rather like that of the hyper-sugared up children they took off, Duo ostensibly threatening Hilde, but neither of them able to stop laughing.

With a sigh that was too wistful for his liking, Heero went on in his search for the lady who had dragged him into this. Movement from the corner of his room caught his attention, as some drapes settled from having been violently thrown aside. A few strides brought him to the balcony that lay behind the drapes and a chuckling Trowa dressed in a very elaborate pirate costume. The sword at his hip gave Heero a moment?s pause of interest before focusing once again on the source of Trowa?s amusement.

Sally, dressed like a medieval princess, seemed to be trying to comfort a distinctly irritated court jester. Indeed Wufei looked ridiculous, and Heero vaguely wondered wht sort of bet he had lost to end up in such a costume. The bells on his hat tinkled gently as he threw the object down with great violence.

?Woman! I have never been subject to such treatment in my life, and I am going home right now!?

?But, Wufei, you promised. . .? She tilted her head just so, and Heero saw something change in Wufei?s expression. Women had some sort of amazing power, Heero had determined this long ago, and right now Sally must have hidden reserves of it to make the Chinese man pick up his hat and walk back towards the ballroom. Wufei refused to make eye contact as he jingled past and Sally gave both Heero and Trowa a big wink as she followed him.

?Have you seen Relena yet?? Was all Trowa said to Heero, still trying to get his chuckling under control.

?Why??

?Just go find her.? The arch to Trowa?s eyebrow and the gleam in his eye made Heero very suspicious.

When he made the effort it was easy enough to find Relena, she was playing with a balloon, tossing it back and forth with Dorothy and saying something with rather a lot of animation in her face. What they were saying exactly was of little concern to Heero, but what struck him as being very much his concern was her costume. The fin didn?t bother him. The idea of a mermaid as a whole seemed a fine idea, and with her graceful form it was quite flattering as well. Maybe a little too flattering. Mostly it was the shell bra: there was far too little of it.

Eyes darting around he noticed how the men near her were looking at her. Heero glared at as many as he could, but in the end he realized how helpless he was to stop those lechers from staring the. . . assets of the one woman in the world who. . . could convince him to come to a party like this.

Relena started as a large black cape was placed firmly around her shoulders, covering her body to mid fin.

?Heero!? She put one hand over his as he clutched her shoulders. Dorothy gave him a look that practically screamed her encouraging of this display of Relena?s. Hell, the devious woman had Relena playing that game with the balloon and all that strain on the shells had been. . .

Not anything he should have been looking at in the first place. Milliardo passed by and gave Heero a brief nod as if to agree with Heero?s decision, for even if the two men couldn?t always agree on many things, the protection of Relena from other men was definitely high on both of their priority lists.

?This is ridiculous Heero, I don?t need your cape.? She turned to look at him and stared with vague, open mouthed shock. He was gorgeous, from the tailored pants and jacket, to the pristine white shirt and medal dangling from the sash around his neck. Heero looked aristocratic, he looked sexy, and right now he looked about ready to kill every man in this room who had looked at her the wrong way (i.e. at all). Picking her up bodily, she tried to struggle, but was ineffectual.

Although it was humiliating to be hauled out over Heero?s shoulder, she realized that this display of protective jealousy was immensely pleasing. They traveled up stairs and through rooms, until they had arrived at a parlor adjacent her personal suite of rooms.

?Heero, what you just did was out of line and I demand an explanation.? Yes, do tell me, Heero, her mind purred.

?You were. . . in a vulnerable position. To let the situation continue would have, hn, compromised your safety.? He searched for a plausible sounding reason, something besides ?I don?t want other men to look at you.?

?Well, I don?t believe that that is a legitimate reason, but I?ll forgive you if you?ll just help me with one thing.? Heero almost beamed in triumph: she was going to change! He was in the clear! No more lechers undressing her with their eyes!

?What??

?My, hm, shells have seem to come loose after that little piggy back ride you gave me. I need someone to re-tie them.? The cape fell from her shoulders and Heero suddenly found the room to be unbearably warm. His palms were sweating too. Relena?s lips parted into a smile and Heero?s mouth twitched in response, baring one fang.

?Ok.? She turned and he had the tortuous job of sliding his hands over her soft bare skin while he struggled to tie the knots that by rights should have only taken him seconds. ?Done.? He finally proclaimed, wondering if there was a shower cold enough waiting for him somewhere in this building.

?Why thank you Heero,? Relena moved towards her room, irritated that Heero hadn?t made the move both of them had been anticipating for so long. Before she walked into her room she turned back and gave an ironic little smile. ?I love the Dracula costume. You make such a handsome count.?

When she exited, Heero?s legs nearly gave out and he collapsed into a chair. It was like he had either dodged a bullet, or missed a target and he wasn?t entirely sure which one it had been. It was starting to feel more like the latter.

The door opened again, and Relena looked out an expression on her face that seemed nervous and embarrassed at the same time.

?I can?t seem to get my top off, now. . . the knots are too tight. Would you help me again?? There was more than a simple question in her heated eyes, and this time Heero felt more than ready to take the necessary leap. He was a fool before. There wasn?t enough cold water in the world to help him now.

?Well, since you?ve already invited me in, I suppose you can?t stop me can you?? His smile was devilish as he tongued a fang and Relena?s eyes lit with surprise and happiness. Maybe costume parties weren?t so bad after all.
