School Dance (working title)
"A dance?" Sargent Sosuke Sagara's brow furrowed in confusion. "What for?"
Major Melissa Mao sighed. He really was hopeless. "It's for fun, Sosuke. You know, to meet people, to socialize. That sort of thing."
"But Miss Chidori already knows everyone in her class. Why would she want to go?" Sosuke still looked confused.
"Because maybe she wants to see some of them outside of class for once! Besides, she's required to go as the class rep, which means you'll have to be there too."
"Understood." the furrow disappeared. This wasn't confusing, it was his duty.
"Hey, maybe you could ask her to the dance. That would be so sweet." Melissa, having explained things to her satisfaction, started to turn away.
"But she is already going. I don't think I will have to ASK her." Sosuke's face re-furrowed.
Melissa slapped her forehead. "Just be at the dance, Sargent."
"Yes ma'am."
(Meanwhile, across the street...)
"Ugh, I can't believe I have to go to this stupid dance!" Kaname Chidori complained to her sister over the phone as she fed her fish, a daily routine.
"So, make it fun! Why don't you ask that interesting guy?" her sister teased.
"Oh, please, that military maniac? I don't think so. Besides, so far everyone I've asked has turned me down... and then run away with their hands over their heads. Whatever that's about. So probably, he would just say no too." Kaname's face became wistful.
"Aha! You WANT him to take you, don't you! I knew it!"
"What? NO! I mean he's nice, but he's so weird and I don't really think I could handle him spouting all his military crap all night even though it would be kind of interesting... But NO! I don't like him at all that freak can't even go a day withouttalkingaboutsomethingweirdand..."
(Meanwhile, across town... )
"Wow, I can't believe how cool this issue of Armslave is! It's got all kinds of specs in it that I didn't know about! Oh, I could read these forever!" Shinji Kazama, tears of joy in his eyes, opened the newest issue of his favorite magazine on the desk in front of him. He was just about to dive into the world of AS when the phone next to his bed rang. Shinji picked up the phone, which was a model M9, and answered cautiously.
"Uh, hello?" Shinji said. No one ever called his private line, as he had repeatedly tried to tell his mother. But she seemed to think it necessary for a teen boy to have his own phone.
"This Shinji?" a male voice on the other line asked. Shinji recognized it as that of one of the upper-class-men from Photo Club.
"Uh, yeah. What do you want?" Shinji could think of no good reason any upper-class-man would have to call him. He was wary.
"See, the thing is, Photo Club is in charge of taking pictures at the school dance next weekend. Problem is, all of US already have dates. Since we figure chances are you DON'T, we all think YOU should take the photos."
"Well, I wasn't really planning on going, but..."
"You're going. Or we'll steal your negatives again. Got it?"
"Yeah, I got it." Shinji said resignedly.
"Good." *click*
Shinji put the phone back down and sighed. It looked as if he was going to a dance.
(The next day, at school... )
"But I really don't know if I want to go." Kyouko Tokiwa strolled next to her friend Kaname, looking thoughtful.
Kaname took a deep, calming breath before replying: "Come on, Kyouko. I HAVE to go... the least you could do is be there with me." She slanted a glance at her friend.
Kyouko still looked thoughtful. "But I don't know how to dance, Kaname. What would I do there?"
"I don't know! Have fun, meet some boys, be a good friend to me?" Kaname threw her hands in the air in frustration. "You ARE supposed to be my best friend. After all the favors I've done for you, you can't even do me this little one?"
"Well, I guess so. But I don't have a date."
"So? Neither do I. Everyone I asked ran away."
"Even Sosuke?" Kyouko smiled faintly, knowing she was baiting her friend.
Kaname growled. "NO... I didn't ASK him. Honestly, Kyouko, why would I?"
"Oh, I don't know, maybe because you think he's INTERESTING?"
Kaname laughed, but it was forced. It was what Kyouko had come to think of as her "Sosuke laugh". It wasn't very convincing.
"Oh, PLEASE, Kyouko, I am NOT interested in him!" Kaname laughed again.
"I didn't say you were." Kyouko said easily, then walked away.
Kaname was left staring after her, wondering why she felt like such a fake. Against her will, she found herself seeking out the subject of their conversation across the school yard. Sosuke was deep in conversation with that *other* military buff, Shinji. Fleetingly, Kaname wondered if Sosuke was even going to be at the dance. Something told her he would be... even if it was just a coincidence. Again.
