All's Fair in Love and War Chapter Nine

It?s me, and I can?t get myself to go away
Oh, God, I shouldn?t feel this way

-Matchbox Twenty

Prussian eyes fluttered open to white walls and IV tubes. Wincing as he lifted his head up a bit, Heero glanced down at his bandaged arm. His shoulder throbbed and he only could vaguely remember why.

Along with a dull ache near his heart which he couldn?t understand. Blinking a few times, he looked around the room. Bouquets of flowers next to his bed caught his attention. Raising his hand, he reached out slowly to touch the petals. His rough fingers pulled out a card and he winced slightly as he opened it. His mouth fell open as he read:

?I believe in you.?

He knew that handwriting, and he remembered very clearly what had happened the day before. He had actually shot Relena.

Groaning, he looked to the other bed. Why hadn?t he noticed it before? He did a double take when he saw blonde hair out of the corner of his eyes. ?Relena.?

Without hesitating, he tossed back the covers and threw himself out of the bed, wincing a little at the throbbing pain in his shoulder. Heero balanced himself on his feet before hobbling over to the other bed.

His heart flopped at what he saw. She was laying there, so weak and defenseless, and covered in blood. Her eyes were closed, so he couldn?t tell what emotions were going through her head. Hatred for him was probably one of them.

At that thought, he flinched and looked away. It was almost like she had already said those words. It hurt even more than that she didn?t even look alive. She was breathing, but barely, and the IV tubes hooked up on her arms did nothing to convince him.

Heero eased himself down on the end of the bed, and admired the woman before him like he was looking at her for the first time. He could not believe himself. Duo and Trowa had been right, after all. He was such an idiot.

Reaching over the side of the bed, he grabbed her medical clipboard. As he read over the information, his eyes widened and he stole a glance at her. This couldn?t be happening. He knew he had screwed up, but this was almost fatal.

A coma.

He shook his head. ?I?m sorry.? He had no idea why he was bothering to tell her this; she couldn?t even hear him. But, it made things a little easier for him. At least he was telling her.

?I?m such a damn idiot, Relena. I had myself convinced that this job had nothing to do with you. Just a way to make money, you know??
Heero heaved a sigh. ?I don?t even know why I did it. That bastard Davis didn?t even help me with what I needed. I killed for him, and he didn?t even hold up his part of the bargain,? he mumbled, frowning a little. ?He couldn?t take away the pain. I thought I deserved this. I?m a killer, Relena.?

He looked over at Relena again. ?I?ve been a killer since the day I was born. Why can?t you understand that? I tried to push the feelings away, but I couldn?t.?

He brushed his eyes with the back of his hand. He looked at his hand, he didn?t even noticed he had started cry. ?During the war, being with you made me feel?different. I didn?t want to kill. And after Mariemaia, I didn?t think I?d kill anyone again. I?m sorry?I lied to you.?

Trembling fingers reached out to touch Relena?s cold hands, and Heero continued. ?Why am I telling you this? I tried to kill you. You should have never had to feel this kind of pain.?

Heero blinked, her fingers seemed to warm under his. He must be imagining it. ?Will you ever forgive me? For not seeing this first?? His voice choked, and he tried to swallow a sob. ?Goddammit, I hate this. Emotions aren?t my thing. Why couldn?t you have liked Quatre or someone else??

He bit his lip, and stopped touching her hands. He couldn?t stop shaking. Reaching up to her face, he carefully touched her lips. Soft, just how he remembered them.

?Do you remember that time on the beach?? He sighed. ?Probably. I don?t know what happened to me. I mean, ?I liked it. But?did you??

Growling, he flung the clipboard at the wall. His shoulders shook a little, which made the throbbing even worse. But he found he couldn?t keep his eyes away from her for long, and cautiously looked down at her face again.

He gave a wistful sigh. ?You really are beautiful, now that I take the time to notice. Not that I deserve anyone like you,? he said quietly, reaching out to touch her face again but recoiling.

?Do you still believe in me? Or do you hate me, for using you?? Heero looked away, and closed his eyes. Fist clenching, he muttered, ?I hate myself.? He fell silent, and fought a losing battle with the tears on the verge of spilling over. His shoulders shook furiously, and he took sharp breaths, feeling the wet tears on his cheeks.

?Are you finished already? I was really enjoying your little speech.?

Heero?s eyes flew open. Looking with disbelief over his wounded shoulder, he blinked. Relena lay there with one eye open and a smirk on her features.

Words failed him completely, and he found himself unable to make any coherent sentences.

Relena winked at him, but frowned afterwards. ?You shot me.?

Heero opened his mouth, but thought better of it and just nodded. Something was very wrong with situation. It was too bad his brain was still in shock, and therefore incapable of speech. After a few heartbeats, he made a sound of protest and what vaguely sounded like ?you.?

The blonde grinned at him, but winced at the effort. ?Good observation, Heero. No, I?m not dead and I?m not in a coma either. Honestly, I thought you knew I was stronger than that.?

?But?I shot you,? Heero finally managed, his voice cracking. Relena raised her eyebrows at him.

?You did and I passed out. I managed to trick you, it seems.?

He blinked a few times and had to look away. This was too much. He thought he had killed her, and now she was scolding him. Wiping at his tears again, he heard her softly say, ?Did you mean what you said??

?Yeah,? he answered, voice on the verge of cracking again. Heero was mentally kicking himself. He supposed, in all honesty, he deserved this.

?Even,? she said, reaching up to touch his face, ?even the part about me being beautiful?? Her fingers gently wiped away his tears, and Heero couldn?t help but notice the fragile look she still held.

?Especially that part.?

She smiled at him, and brushed away his bangs. Brows furrowing into a thoughtful expression, she spoke, ?I do remember, and I did like it.?

Heero?s eyes widened a little, and he turned his head to look straight at her. As gently as he could, he touched her wounded shoulder with eyes full of guilt and hope.

?And, I don?t hate you.?

He blinked at her. She couldn?t possibly mean it, could she? After everything he had done? He smiled when she winked at him.

?I liked the flowers,? he said quietly, still smiling. She laughed.

?Do you have any idea how much effort that took? They must think I?m crazy,? she said, giggling. She let out a hiss, clutching her shoulder. Heero withdrew his hand, and watch her with concern.

Relena was taken aback by how soft his voice sounded. ?And they think I?m not? I shot the only one I love.?

Relena blinked, but her mouth broke out into a wicked grin. Heero suddenly felt very afraid, and recoiled.

Too late.

Looking down with wide eyes, Heero noticed a hand firmly grasped around his shirt collar. He swallowed.

When he looked up, he could sworn have that he was much closer to Relena?s face than he had been before. He didn?t have much time to think before her soft lips crushed onto his own.

Staring with wide eyes at Relena, he tried to work this out in mind, which at the moment was a little preoccupied. He may not have deserved this, but it felt perfect. Her eyes were closed, and he felt her hand in his mop of brown hair.

Relena pulled back suddenly, a slightly annoyed expression on her face. ?What??

Heero reached up and touched the hand on his face. ?I don?t deserve this, Relena,? he said quietly.

Scowling, Relena grabbed the back of his neck with her free hand.

?Shut up and kiss me, Yuy.?

The second time Relena?s lips met his, Heero didn?t hesitate. Tossing nearly 15 years of training and thoughts out of the window, he wrapped his arms around her. Pressing his lips back, Heero lost all control.

Burying his hands in her blonde locks, he devoured her lips with some primal need. Relena moaned into his mouth, and caressed his face with gentle touches. Heero pulled her closer, and placed light kisses down her neck.

Relena smiled as she watched Heero, and pulled him down onto the bed with her. Fighting back a giggle as his eyes shot open, she reached up underneath his green tank top.

Heero let out a gasp as her cold fingers ran across his chest. His hand trembled as he fought to keep his emotions under control, and was failing miserably. As she seductively ran her soft fingertips over his stomach, he hesitantly reached out and ran his lips across her lips.

He was rewarded by a blast of cold air as his shirt was lifted off. Blinking, he allowed her to lift it over his head. For a fleeting second, he couldn?t see her. And that?s all it took.

Relena?s eyes were wide with surprise, but she had a smirk on her lips. Heero?s eyes sparkled, and a predatory grin on his face. Relena threw him an innocent smile, and Heero couldn?t take it any longer.

Growling, he lunged for her shirt and proceeded to lift it off. Relena gave a startled gasp, but soon relaxed and held her hands above her head with a wince. Heero gently eased her shirt off, and placed kisses down her neck. Relena moaned, and slipped her fingers carefully down his jeans.

Heero slowly lifted his eyes to meet hers. ?Relena,? he spoke in a soft but serious tone, ?this is a hospital bed.?

Rolling her eyes, Relena reached down farther, effectively shutting him up. ?Heero,? she said breathlessly, ?trust me that I have things a little more planned out than that?? To emphasis her point, Relena unbuttoned his jeans.

His eyes widened, but he gave her one of his few genuine smiles.

Trowa put down the headphones with a slight grin on his face. He turned to look at Duo, who did the same. Winking at him, Duo grinned broadly.

?Didn?t think it would work, Tro??

?Of course I did. It was my idea,? he replied, mockingly offended.

Duo laughed. ?Yeah, good call on the bullet proof vest.?

?Thanks. Think Heero will find out??

A snort. ?Never. Hell, he believed she was in a coma.?

?So true. Let?s go, our work here is done.?

?Maybe they will have some?..? Duo winked.

Trowa severed the connection.
