It?s A Kid Thing
Final Chapter
Melville?s Best Friend
?You.?
It was simple. A word made up of three letters. A word that meant nothing to so many, but meant the world to his ears. A whisper. A gentle roll of the tongue.
Never could it be harsh.
It meant the world to her lips, to her tongue: meant her life. It meant his.
?Can I help you, honey??
?I?m looking for Relena Dorlain. She attends this university.?
The woman?s brow furrowed as she lowered and raised her glasses. The screen was playing tricks on her, it seemed. His patience was trying, and he turned to leave.
?I?ll find her myself.?
?You! It?s you!?
?I didn?t think?why are you here??
?I had to see you, Relena. I had?I have so many things to tell you.?
The wind toyed with strands of hair. Bits of tears caught themselves into swaying particles of honey, and before she could register any thought or action, she was in his arms.
?Hello, Millie? Hey, it?s Relena. Oh I?m fine?Listen, can you tell Heero I?m on my way? I?m almost to your??
?What do you mean??
The phone fell to the pavement as she ran towards the retreating bus.
It would take her back.
?I thought I?d lost you.?
Fabric brushed her face as her head meshed with his warm being. Never close enough. Never near enough, she scooted in further and further, pushing him back.
?Never. I will never leave you.?
Such a whisper. Such a statement, such a plea had never been heard of him. What could time change but feelings? What searing pain would never have been erased had he not found her? Where would his heart have left him? What words would escape his soul?
Bits of rain tapped the tip of her head, and she looked up.
The rain came from him.
?What do you mean, ?you???
?You?re the boy she went in search of. You?re Heero Yuy. Saw the picture she had of you, hon. It didn?t do ya? justice.?
?She went?where is she??
?Well, she ran up to Harvard faster than a burnin? bunny. I suppose she?s figured out you aren?t there. I reckon she?ll turn up.?
He ran. Faster than his legs could carry. Faster than his heart could beat.
Faster than his heated words the night he lost his life.
Snuggled within the pit of his being, wrapped in warmth that she could never generate alone, she whispered to him.
?Why, Heero??
Her sniffles died immediately into his shirt, and he found himself moving her chin to meet her gaze. Those wimple words. They rolled of tongues so easily in the movies. So easily. Acting.
But he didn?t want to act anymore.
The bus halted, screeching with the weight of too many passengers. She ran off, bumping into a few elderly as she ran to her house.
His side screamed at him, and the intellectual inside told him acid was building up within his body. His mind cried: he was fevered with passion. What could drive a man this hard but love? Two blocks until he could see her house. He willed his legs to carry him two more blocks.
?Harry, do you see this? Those two young ones.?
Harry opened his eyes, welcoming the warm world once more, and glanced at what his wife had shouted about.
?Katherine, you do me a favor, and let me sleep.?
?Harry, they?re going to run into each other. Get out the mobile??
?When will you call it a cell? That?s the hip name for it.?
?You?re old, Harry. You?re not supposed to be cool anymore.?
?I was cool in the 30?s I can be cool now.?
?You?re 75 years old, dear??
?You?re not getting any younger, either, Katherine.?
?Harry, I?.THEY STOPPED!!!!?
?You??
He panted, unable to breathe. Air, he needed air?
?I didn?t think?why are you here??
?I had to see you, Relena. I had?I have so many things to tell you.?
She ran to him. The force tilted him back, making him step into the grass of a familiar childhood playground.
And suddenly, he could breathe.
Her warm scent permeated his soul. It filled his lungs with more than oxygen.
?I thought I?d lost you.?
?Never. I will never leave you.?
Her head tilted a moment, and to his shame, she saw the tears that escaped his tormented soul. She left them untouched, and her head found its way into his chest once more.
?Why, Heero??
No shudder passed through her body. No tremble or shaking emitted from her throat. No lip parted to gasp or sigh. His words meant nothing. Reason. She cared for the reason, but it didn?t matter. All had been forgiven.
?I heard one that?emotions?can make people act differently.?
No loosened grip. If anything, she moved closer and held tighter.
?The thought of you leaving me, Relena??
?They?re hugging, Harry. Why do you suppose they?re doing that??
?Katherine, would it be too much to ask for you to mind your own business??
?Yes.?
He groaned. It was well executed; his many years with his wife had been best spent groaning complaints.
?They look so sad, Harry.?
?All young ones do. Remember our fights??
?Oh yes.?
A recognizable smile caught itself in her eyes.
?But I thought that if I could lose my heartache??
?Oh, Heero.?
Her warmth left him as she gazed into his eyes. Arms snaked around her to keep the chill from eating her, and she looked at him, smile evident on her features. That curve of her lips reestablished his world, and a breath escaped his lips that he didn?t know he?d been holding.
?Finish, Heero.?
Her eyes closed. Bare arms continued to shelter her being, and he saw her as an angel that moment. Light found her, forming a pure halo around her being, and she radiated with Heaven?s light.
?If I could lose you to anger, then my heart wouldn?t break.?
He replaced her arms with his, and watched as her smile grew. She refused to open her eyes. This game she was playing made his heart pound.
?Oh, Harry?He?s going to propose!?
?No he?s not.?
Harry moved his sunglasses down. ?He?s going to confess his love. The proposal is a few years off.?
?And since when were you the master of these things? I?ll have you know I watch my stories, and they all end up proposing.?
?Your stories? Your soap operas?? he cackled. ?Katherine, you?re older than you look. I?ll have to bury you soon.?
?Shh. I can barely hear them.?
?You can barely hear anything.?
His head lowered to her ear, and whispered the words that, she wanted to her?but more importantly?he wanted to say.
?I love you, Relena. I love you so much. Forgive me.?
Her eyes opened upon his confession.
?I forgave you when I first saw your eyes 19 years ago. You have my heart, Heero Yuy. I love you.?
He lowered his mouth to hers, and she stood on her toes to meet him, unable to get enough of his warmth.
Tongues mingled with tongues, breathing became hard and erratic. Hands roamed over bodies, remembering what once was and would forever be. Melting into the kiss, Relena started to lose herself. Her knees buckled, and he found himself propping her against a slide so she could keep up. Heero refused to relinquish his hold on her. Never. He would never let her go.
?Now they?re kissing.?
Harry made no reply.
?How strange.?
She looked at the couple, transfixed.
?Why do you suppose they kiss so freely in public? I can?t imagine that being proper,? her hand rose to her blushing and wrinkled cheeks.
Harry smiled.
?Why do you think that would be considered proper to them? My goodness. How crude.?
Harry grabbed her hand and kissed it.
?I guess, Katherine?? he said, looking at the couple catching a glimpse of his past with theirs, ?that it?s a kid thing.?
Finis.
The end!!!! Finally!!!! ^__^ Well, ya?ll, I was poked into finishing this. I know?I?m a horrid person. I wasn?t going to finish it at all, but?I did. I hope that?s good for y?all. I put a lot into it. That?s my last fic, guys! *cries* Thank you, all you pokers, that poked me until I wrote this.
