Epilogue
Two Years Later
Blurred red lines dances in front of his eyes, and beside him something shifted and gave a muffled sigh. His vision became gradually clearer, and he had just made out the number that represented the hour when he reacted.
?Shit! Babe, get up; he?s going to be home any minute!?
Hilde peeked her head out from under the covers looking thoroughly hassled. ?You ought to be used to it by now,? the part of her mind that was awakening reminded. ?Tell me again why we always end up having sex in Heero?s apartment when he gets upset about it?? Hilde asked Duo as he tried to throw on his wrinkled clothes as quickly as possible.
?Because it?s nice as hell in this place,? he replied as if it were the obvious answer.
?You should just move in then,? Hilde grumbled as she grabbed her clothes and moved toward the bedroom door.
?You know I don?t want to have to feel like I owe that bitch anything; it?s bad enough she?s got Heero in her jaws of life?hey, where?re you going??
?Shower.?
?Aw, Hil! You?re giving us away!? Duo whined.
The only response was the bathroom door shutting and the sound of running water.
------------
Heero walked in the door thirteen minutes later, looking as though he had swallowed a lemon. His mood only seem to darken as he glanced at Duo and then over at the bathroom door.
?What?s up, Bro?? Duo greeted cheerily.
?I wasn?t born yesterday, Duo, so don?t feign innocence with me.?
Duo pretended to be clueless. ?What?s the matter with you??
?Nothing is a matter with me; I don?t have sex with my girlfriend in other people?s homes!?
Quite used to the outburst, Duo didn?t even attempt to deny it further. ?Just wait, Heero. When you meet a girl like that, you?ll do crazy things too.?
?I don?t know where you?ve been, but I?ve already got one, and I don?t do shit like that,? Heero snapped back.
?Oh please, Catherine doesn?t count!? Duo argued. ?You don?t like her and there?s no real commitment there.?
Heero was tempted to remind Duo that there wasn?t supposed to be any real commitment between him and Hilde either, but thought it best to leave it alone. ?Yeah well, now there is. I still don?t know how she talked me into this stupid marriage idea of hers.?
?At least it?s not permanent.?
?Don?t I know it.?
A shrill ring pierced the air of the room, and Heero gave an agitated sigh. ?Hello? Yeah. K. Uh-huh?whatever you want?? he paused, rolled his eyes and glanced heavenward in annoyance. ?Love you, too. Bye.?
Duo blanched and gave Heero a questioning look once he had hung up the cell.
?Don?t ask. That?s her new thing since I somehow got dragged into this wedding from Hell,? Heero explained as he began to pace the floor. He glanced over at the bathroom again. ?Is she going to be done soon? I?d like some time to myself in my apartment.?
On any given day, Duo would have taken offense to Heero?s eagerness to get rid of them. Today, however, his brother seemed a bit over the edge over something. ?What?s with the attitude?? Duo asked lightly, not wanting to set Heero off again.
Heero sank down into the chair nearest him, and some of the tension in his posture began to dissipate. ?I?m sorry. Catherine?s driving me up the wall and my professor just assigned me a subbing job as an added aggravation.?
?Why?s that bad??
?It?s not. I get some experience and a grade just for sitting there. The thing that irks me is it?s one of those upperclass schools with all the rich snobs I detest. I can feel the headache already.?
Duo was sympathetic there; every rich person he had ever encountered had been someone who needed to be brought down a peg or two. However, he knew that hearing that wasn?t going to make Heero feel better. ?Don?t be so quick to be a pessimist, maybe you?ll like it,? he encouraged.
Heero looked very skeptical. ?I doubt it.?
