It?s A Kid Thing 8
Melville?s Best Friend
The wind tugged at her hair, grasping the few strands that had flown free away from her face. Her reflection gazed back at her with a depressed silence. The water rippled with her tears, causing the pond to move gracefully. Her tears continued to fall even when she could no longer conclude which splash was hers, and which splash was the rain?s.
I?m standing on the bridge.
I?m waiting in the dark.
I thought that you?d be here
By now.
She had visited her comfort zone. She had visited what should have been the place where Heero had found her. She had stood on that bridge waiting for him for hours. Through a soaked leotard and shimmering wet hair, she waited. Though her appointed flight was leaving, she waited. All that mattered was when he?d come for her.
All that mattered was him apologizing; because she had nothing to apologize for.
All that mattered were his arms.
She sighed as she stood, watching every taxi drive by. They all ignored her. She didn?t matter, anyway. She was a washed-up dancer with no love, no fiends, and no parents. Her tears continued to fall as she watched for him. Her ears picked up every noise that echoed down the silent streets. Hugging herself, she sat on a bench and continued to wait. Her breath formed in front of her, and for the first time, she realized how truly cold it was.
There?s nothing but the rain;
No footsteps on the ground.
I?m listening, but there?s
No sound.
After three hours, she gave up. She had given up on him forever. Never again would she want him.
She was flattered when Matt asked her. In truth, she had decided not to go. It took Matt an hour on the phone to convince her. She reluctantly accepted his invitation, and went out with him the next day to find a suitable dress.
?I don?t like this. It doesn?t make you glow.?
She sighed. It was the 7th dress.
?Nope. Try the next one. I liked it. Purple is your color.?
She trudged to the dressing room, leaving a few gestures with Matt. The attendant blushed at the what she caught, and left the two alone.
Relena looked at herself in the mirror before showing Matt. He was right; purple was her color. It hugged her tiny frame as if it were skin, and it felt that comfortable. The silk soothed her fevered skin, allowing her some respite from all that had occurred recently. It was strapless, and clung to her chest as if she had one. It draped about like a fountain in the back, showing the majority of her backside in the process. The farther down it went, the more tapered it became.
She wished that Heero could see it.
Isn?t anyone tryina? find me?
Won?t somebody come take me home?
As soon as she stepped out, Matt cried. Feeling awkward, she changed immediately, and paid for the dress. He was still crying when they left.
Matt aided her in the hair department. Although she knew how to do hair from the countless number of times she had to fix it for dance, she was too depressed to do anything but hand him bobby pins.
?It looks beautiful.?
She stared at him, her eyes trying to give a thankful light.
?I?m sorry, Relena.?
Her eyes questioned him. He knew she wouldn?t speak. She hadn?t talked since the day she returned from New York. The only thing he ever saw her do was cry.
?That I?m not Heero.?
Her eyes turned hard, and she ripped out her elaborate hairdo, screaming in frustration. Tears fell down her face at an alarming rate, and she flung her fists at whatever she found. Matt caught her and clung to her with his life. He kissed her forehead, trying to assuage her pain. His free hand stroked her now matted hair, and he held her while she cried. He held her and cried with her.
It?s a damn cold night
Tryinta? figure out this life.
She looked at him when she finished, a look of total horror on her face. Her hand stroked her hair, and she mouthed the words ?I?m so sorry? to him.
He kissed her again.
?It?s all right, baby. It?s okay. We?ll fix it.?
He kissed her over and over.
?Shh?We?ll fix it??
He had left to get ready himself. Her hair fell to her waist in curls. It suited her, most definitely. She couldn?t cry; not after Matt had applied all that mascara. She looked at herself in the mirror.
To her astonishment, she could only see half of her body. Her entire left side was gone. It was then that she realized why she couldn?t speak, or dance, or laugh? She was missing all those parts of her. The only reason she ever did any of those things was because of Heero.
She didn?t even know the person in the mirror. She didn?t even recognize her.
Won?t you take me by the hand
Take me somewhere new?
I don?t know who you are, but I?
I?m with you.
I?m with you.
Yeah, yeah.
They arrived late. Matt?s rented car caught a bird when he opened the door to ask directions. They spent the majority of the night trying to get it out of the car. Matt clung to Relena?s hair as if it might explode-- for fear the bird with get itself entangled in it.
Of course, it didn?t.
It weaved its claws in Matt?s head, instead.
Screaming, he ran out of the car, flailing his arms around.
?It?s okay, Relena! I?ve got the situation under control!!!!?
It pooped in his hair, and they had to stop at a diner to wash it out.
When they arrived, a slow dance was playing. Matt asked for her hand, and led her to the dance floor.
She was completely afraid.
I?m lookin? for a place.
I?m searchin? for a face.
Is anybody here
I know?
Her legs wouldn?t move with her. She shook her head to Matt, allowing him to know she couldn?t.
?Not even a slow dance??
No.
?Not even with me??
No.
?Relena??
Never again.
She ran off the dance floor as the songs changed. A familiar tune was greeted her, and she found herself throwing her fist at a wall outside the doors of the prom.
She heard everyone sing along with it; allowing themselves the sadness of the impending parting they would all have to do after graduation. She huddled in a corner, unable to take what fate was dealing her. Her lips slowly formed the words:
Keep smilin??Keep shinin??Knowing you can always count on me?For sure? That?s what friends are for?
?Hey Heewo?you?we supposta be Ewton John? Not Stevie Wondew!?
?Weww, that?s not my fauwt. I wike this pawt.?
?So??
?So, I?m gonna sing it.?
?Hey, Heewo??
?Yeah??
?Can I sing it with you??
?Yeah, Wewena. As wong as you don?t mess up the wowds.?
She left Matt there alone and walked home.
?Cause nothin?s goin? right
And everything?s a mess,
And no one likes to be alone.
She spent that summer in their tree house, removing bits and pieces that reminded her of him. He never even showed his face around her, and she truly thought she was hated. Her heart screamed for him. She yearned for her other half. She wanted to feel him, to be able to touch him; fondle him with every inch of her body. She wanted to look in his eyes and know the pain was gone. She wanted him.
She would kill for him.
Isn?t anyone tryina? find me?
Won?t somebody come take me home?
There were endless videos in the tree house. She watched them all with wet cheeks. They were so cute when they didn?t know?
?Sit, Melville.?
?Sit, Mellie-Bellie.?
?I COMMAND you! Sit!?
?You?re not God, Heero. You can?t make him sit.?
?Quiet, you! I?m the dog?s daddy, and I say he sits!?
?Stop that! You?ll hurt him!?
?He?s too old to be hurt.?
?Nu uh. My daddy says he?s old all the time, and his back hurts and he?s ?seen better days?.?
?Well, I dunno what that means, but Melville?s a good dog. He?s too cool to be old.?
?You say that now, but when he gets arthamaritumus, you won?t say that no more.?
?True??
She smiled at the memory, then turned off the TV and sat back in her chair. Her legs dangled over the tiny thing, making her legs seem impossibly long, or the chair fantastically small. Matt greeted her, telling her she looked big. He sat in the tree house, and watched her.
?You know?the only thing you?re lacking in here is a shower.?
She looked at him.
?Though I doubt there?d be any room for the two positions when you?re in the shower.?
Her eyebrow raised.
?You don?t know? MY shower knobby LIES. It LIES to me.?
She continued to stare.
?There?s a hot and a cold knobby, but does it tell the truth? No? There?s a small line drawn between fantastically hot, and flippin? freezing.?
Her eyes lit, but her face didn?t waver.
?You have two positions in the shower? One?s like a safe-breaker, where you?re trying to find the PERFECT temperature, and the other one is you plastered to the side of the wall ?cause the bloody temp?s too hot or cold?.Am I boring you??
She shook her head.
?Good. I thought that was funny. Was it? I have a gig tomorrow night.?
She gave him a thumb up.
It?s a damn cold night.
Tryina? figure out this life.
Won?t you take me by the hand
Take me somewhere new?
I don?t know who you are, but I?
I?m with you.
College was horrible. State schools were nothing but party schools, and she found herself too dull to be apart of them. Her roommate never talked to her, and flicked her off whenever Relena walked in the room. She sat on her bed, unable to do her homework for the 5th night in a row.
Her professors had threatened to kick her out. She said nothing, which infuriated them all the more.
She remembered Heero all the time. All she thought about was him. He was constantly interrupting her thoughts. She longed for his body against hers. She wished for his comforting voice in her ears. She prayed he?d hold her the way he used to.
Why is everything so confusing?
She watched the TV as it suddenly turned on with old memories.
Maybe I?m just out of my mind?
The night in the barn..
Yeah, yeah?yeah?
The time in the hot tub?
Yeah?Yeah?.
Him on her in her bed?
Yeah??.
She sat up with a resounding creak from the bed. She quickly sent her parents, the Dean, and Matt an e-mail, and headed out of the school.
For good.
It?s a damn cold night.
