Of Mystical Gates
Chapter Three
Melville?s Best Friend

The pixie was excessively questioned. The travelers wanted to know all he knew. What were Dornas like? Had he ever seen a Dorna? What did the Dornas ask them to do? Were they good fighters? Quatre quickly became tired of all the questions. Duo bombarding him was not making him feel welcome to the group. It made him feel like a messenger of sorts.

?Well, have you?? Duo asked stepping over a log. Quatre fluttered about aimlessly. He hated walking, and silently boasted to the others that he could fly. He drifted around with ease, seemingly unable to grow weary.

?Can you stop asking such unimportant questions? I assure you that when the time comes, all will be answered,? Quatre said.

Duo stopped talking to the Pixie and concentrated on Trowa.

?I have heard you carry information on the old city.?

Trowa smirked. ?I know an amount. However, it is of little relevance at the moment.?

?You learned it from whom, may I ask??

?It has only been carried down by legend. I know as little as you, Duo.?

Duo sighed, his exhaustion was clearly visible in his eyes, as weariness chased the brightness from them. ?I know very little, Trowa. Perhaps you would be so kind as to entertain me with your knowledge- even if I have already heard it. I am tired of foul moods and weariness.?

Trowa easily began the story of long ago; the legend of the hero. He recited it from memory, allowing all who heard to know he held the prophesy high in his heart; evidence that he believed it.

?There once was a great city where all creatures lived together in harmony. The city was large, able to hold many families. During the nights, there were parties, where everyone would hug and dance and kiss and treat one another as equals,? he stated.

?But that was not to be, was it, Trowa?? Quatre intervened.

?No, my friend. For in the night, there was an attack on the city. Goblins, humans, dwarves and many unfaithful creatures demolished the city until it was nothing.?

For a few yards, they walked in silence, afraid to disturb the peace of the truth that had just been told. Heero picked up the story where Trowa had left it.

?However, the Oracle prophesized that a hero would come out of the ashes of the tragedy and lead his people into the Gates once more.?

?Zenethia,? Duo whispered.

?Zenethia? In all my days, I?ve never heard that part of the story,? Quatre said, watching Heero with curiosity peeking through the brightness of his demeanor.

?Zenethia is where the hero was said to be born. In this one mystic place, creatures from all of Aria are said to still be living in harmony,? Trowa stated, feeding Ali a piece of food from his pocket.

?The hero?? Quatre repeated.

The travelers had come to a huge waterfall. The crystal clear water seemed to glide down to meet its partner at the base of the cliff. The hushed chill welcomed them, and they sat down to drink. Save for the water, there was no sound. Duo bowed his head in the majesty of nature. He kneeled, and removed his cape in respect for Nature; for she was the keeper of his powers as an Elf. The others quickly rid themselves of their heavy capes and weapons, and allowed the tranquility of the setting to rest their bodies and minds. Seeing something interesting, Quatre broke the silence by flying over to examine the perplexing object. The grounded young travelers stared at the pixie.

?I thought so. I can?t believe our luck. How fortunate!? Quatre chirped.

?What is it?? Trowa questioned.

Quatre floated back with a handful of sparkling crystals.

?What are those?? Trowa once again questioned.

?These are called the Malian crystals. We were lucky to find them.?

?What secrets do they hide, Quatre?? Duo asked.

?Well, the Dorna are shape shifters.?

His friends continued to sit, waiting for Quatre to finish.

?The Dorna, if they shape-shift too much, loose most of their power. Without a boost, they die.?

?Are they not immortal?? Duo questioned.

?The Dorna are no different from you or I. We can live forever if we are not killed. We?ve taken a great risk leaving our kingdoms to join in a fight. We can never die as long as no one tries to rid us of our life. Just as we are, so are the Dorna.?

?Would not all powerful beings have less of a shortcoming? ? Duo questioned, sarcasim leaping from his mouth with hidden laughter.

?Such powerful creatures need many drawbacks. They could one day take over this world. They could kill you, Duo. You should be grateful,? Heero smirked, eager to prove to Duo that he wasn?t the only member of the team who was intelligent. Duo smirked as well, catching Heero?s message.

?Of course a Dorna would never do such a thing. Nastoh! (1) Each Dorna is given at birth their very own crystal. They use the crystal to recharge themselves?understand. To gain more energy. Unfortunately, their crystals also deplete sometimes. They replenish their Malian crystals with the wild ones, like these.? Quatre spread out the crystals for the creatures to see.

?Does man know of this?? Heero asked.

?I don?t think so? I would highly doubt it. It?s most likely that they use the crystals as money,? Quatre whispered. The crystals reflected in his eyes, and they danced and leapt as if seeking freedom.

?We?d best get going,? Heero stated, and arose to leave. ?Trowa, I want your bird to fly ahead of us. If she sees anything wrong, tell her to call out. Don?t make her fly back in order to warn us.?

Trowa did as he was commanded, and sent the phoenix off.

It had been a week. Nothing stopped the immortals from their journey. They had received no trouble from goblin or dwarf at night; no animal by day. The travelers considered themselves lucky. Duo jumped idly from tree to tree whilst the others walked. Quatre was carried on Trowa?s back, as he was asleep.

?We should be in their realm now. I can smell a new creature close to us.? Duo shouted from the tree.

Trowa awakened the sleepy Quatre, and questioned him on their whereabouts.

?Oh!? the pixie flew off Trowa?s back, stunned. ?We are here, my friends. We are in Queen Relena?s realm!?

They inwardly sighed. They tried to fix their appearance, brushing stray hair back in place, cleaning bits of trees from their tangled hair. Duo grimaced as he pulled many twigs out of his tangled braid, and asked for assistance from Quatre who happily obliged. He sang an enchanting melody about the Dorna as he went to work, and happily pointed which direction his companions should go. ?Go that way. We will find the Dorna in that direction.? Quatre sang childishly.

?You?re a little too excited, Quatre. I thought you had seen a Dorna before.? Trowa stated.

?Yes, but no outsider has ever seen Queen Relena.?

?I doubt this time-? Heero was cut off as the men heard a phoenix cry. As soon as they looked into the abyss of the sky, Ani fell from it.

?Ani!? Trowa called out, and caught the bird. It lay dead in his arms. ?Oh no.? Trowa touched it. His best friend didn?t move. Trowa closed his eyes, and let his tears fall for his friend.

?Trowa, you have to stand and fight. It takes something terrible to kill a phoenix.? Quatre stated, the joviality gone from his voice gone, and was replaced with scared determination. ?We will need your strength for this battle, my friend,? Quatre touched the bird, and it burst into flames. Trowa?s eyes caught each lapping flame. Each magic dance was forever etched into his memory. True; the bird would live again after it erupted from its own ashes, but one could never keep a phoenix for longer than one of its lives.

Trowa touched the flames, marveling at how it did not burn him, and said his goodbyes. Duo called his name softly. Obeying, Trowa quickly prepared for battle. Every sword was drawn, every bow was arched, and through the trees they heard it come.

Black and terrible, breathing fire. The demon spotted them, its stomach growling in frustration. Its eyes were large and black, and if one looked into them, they saw the gates of Moor, the realm of the dead. They were lost in its eyes, unable to catch a trace of a reflection of anything around it. The wood was thick with its stench. The metallic smell of blood permeated through the forest air and penetrated their lungs with enough force to rip a tree by the roots.

It stood as tall as an Elfin tree, and was the length of four mud huts. His skin looked as if it had been made from ash, and horns penetrated every inch of his back. His head resembled that of a football in length, and horns emerged from that as well, giving it the appearance of a bull. The weary travelers somehow stood their ground, and the demon breathed a small amount of fire their direction.

?Our death is at hand.?

?You must not speak that way, Duo. One must always see the good in every situation,? Quatre stated, brow furrowed with determination.

?I was merely stating the obvious, my friend. We are not at our best, if you will note.?

Quatre ignored his friend?s comments and gritted his teeth to show his strength.

How in the world do Dorna have such horrors in their kingdom? thought Heero.

?It will pay. It will pay for what it?s done to me.? Trowa cried, the tears still fresh on his skin. The demon laughed. The very sound shook the wood, and Duo was forced off of his tree. Trowa?s fists shook with rage, and forced the feeling to the rest of his body. His fingers grazed his bow expertly, feeling his body heat flow to his weapon.
?Instanayopa. Be with me, the power of my people. The power of the Treelings? It came to life with tint of gold that cast a shadow on him. The party watched the monster in horror as it lifted his gaze to soley Trowa. Its growl shook where Trowa was standing, and yet he did not falter.

?In all of Aria, I have seen nothing to demonic! Quatre, what is it?? Heero yelled.

?This I do not know. But it will see its end this hour,? Quatre stated.

Heero looked at the pixie. He was determined to kill the demon. Quatre started muttering something, his hands held in prayer. He floated, without the aid of his wings, above his friends, and a barrier formed around him. Heero watched him, unable to tear his eyes away from the small creature generating so much power.

?He?s working on a spell, Heero. Let?s attack now before we loose our chance.? Duo cried.

Quatre?s determination was stolen by Heero?s eyes, and he turned to face the monster, sword drawn and ready. They attacked. Fire smoldered everything in their paths, as the fighters tried only to dodge the fire. They couldn?t lay a hand on the beast. As the fire charged at them, Duo conjured up a shield.

?This will not hold, you two! Go!? he yelled.

The other two charged at the monster. Trowa?s arrows wouldn?t penetrate its skin, and Heero?s sword left no mark.

?Master Heero, you must increase your power.?

The weapon soon shone with a terrible light, and the eye of the holders gleamed. Trowa?s eyes lost no shine as he continued to send arrows towards the monster. Soon, his arrows were afire with Trowa?s light, and they were able to leave a mark on the beast.

They could still hear Quatre?s spell as they slammed their weapons into the monster?s flesh. A pain-filled scream echoed off every tree, and the demon?s blood spilled over the weapons. Heero?s sword blasted the goo off, where it dissentigrated within the sword?s light, and he lunged for another attack. The monster, however, saw him coming, and grabbed his body, clentching Heero?s body with all his might. The sword immediately lost its shine, and before Heero could contemplate, he felt his flesh burning in the fiery grip of the hellish being?s fist. A cry escaped his parted lips, and he could feel his throat burn with his heated breath. His armor did little to prevent the feeling of anguish; his skin was on fire. He could feel himself slowly cooking, but the monster threw him before Heero felt his tendons curl. He fell against a tree, unconscious. Trowa watched in horror as Heero fell, assuming he was dead. Duo reared his sword and stabbed the monster, once again drawing blood. The sticky hot mess was all over Duo. It covered him like lava would a city. The stench filled his mouth and airway, making it difficult to breath. The stench flooded all open passageways to his lungs, and charged at his insides. Once they reached his system, he realized the fumes were toxic. He fell to the forest ground.

Quatre chanted louder.

Trowa jumped to a tree, planning an assault on the creature?s head. Instant death, Trowa hoped. The creature eyed Quatre with a sudden hatred. He reared his head back, and breathed deeply. No spell would save the pixie from the fires of hell. Quatre was met with the blaze, and called upon a shield. Slowly, ever so slowly, the wood began to chill. Trowa began to grow cold, enough so, that he could see his breath.

He?s trying to freeze the demon?

Trowa wasted no time. He leapt from the tree, firing blazing bright arrows at the creature?s head. One punctured his eye, and the creature stopped his fire and grabbed the area he no longer had. With his one good orb, he managed to spot Trowa, and grasped him. As he did Heero, Trowa was soon crying from the burning sensations that blinded his thoughts. Trowa soon joined Quatre?s side. Quatre still prayed. He was steadily loosing power, and it had become hard for him to breath. He gasped for breath, fighting all in him that threatened to retreat.

My friends and commerades need me, and I refuse to let them die?

Slowly, his shield started to fade, and the winter wind died as well. A spell of this magnitude was not one Quatre attempted often. The snow was slowing down the creature a bit, but it still tried to kill the remaining hero. Right before Quatre lost grip with reality, he saw a Dorna woman trying to comfort him.

?It will be okay. I promise,? she said in his language. He felt her warm essence leave as he felt himself falling into oblivion. Before he fell, however, he saw her single-handedly kill the beast. The fuzzy sight was too much for him, and he laid his head down, happy the fight was over, and exhausted.

The monster emitted a blood-curdling scream, and died. He melted into the forest floor, and the roots of the trees rejected his essence. His remains drifted back to the gates of Moor, where they belonged. He smiled as he heard the creature fall. The same warm arms surrounded him again, and he heard her speak, once more in the language of his people.

?Hold on. Don?t give up yet. My people will help you, just, please hold on?.?

Before he drifted away, only a single thought ran through the depths of his mind:
Queen Relena was holding him.

I love the way they all started preening in anticipation of seeing Relena. Great stuff. More soon?
