Chapter One: "Go ahead, Duo. I don?t care. "
With his hand on the doorknob, ready to leave for work, Heero Yuy was delayed by the electronic trilling of the vidcom. Slowly cocking one dark brow, Heero let his eyes narrow suspiciously at the offensive device. He turned back and headed towards it, wondering who had found him. He never received calls; he gave them.
After the Eve Wars four years ago, he had removed all traces of himself for the express purpose of disappearing off the face of the earth. Heero was now back on an L1 colony and living the anonymous life of a civilian, going through the everyday eight-hour shifts, five days a week workloads that all other humans did. No one knew where he was. He?d severed all ties with the other pilots, the Preventers, and her?
The locations of the caller made his heart skip a beat and his hand freeze as he reached for the connect button.

What? Could it be?
Heero tried to ignore the heavy feeling of disappointment, as the familiar face of Duo Maxwell materialized on the screen. His ever-present scowl turned darker than usual, but it didn?t faze the former pilot it was directed at one bit. Better yet, it seemed to make his smile stretch wider over his sunny features.
?Nice to see you too, Heero.?
?What do you want??
?Oh-ho, sorry man, did I wake you up from your beauty sleep?? Duo couldn?t help but tease, but inwardly, he was concerned. His friend looked more the worse for wear than ever he was when they were in the war.
Heero couldn?t stand his friend?s obviously merry disposition. He couldn?t because he didn?t understand it. ?You?ve got two minutes to explain yourself, Duo.?
Shrugging and rolling his eyes, Duo dove right into the subject of ?her.? Well, actually tip-toed in would be a better description. Whenever they spoke of ?her,? Duo was always as cautious as hell. But he just had to know for his own safety. ?Ok, umm, uh, remember that girl you risked your neck for in the Wars, Heero??
?Relena. You can say her name, Duo,? Heero replied, his curiosity at Duo?s hesitancy piqued but refusing to show it.
?Yeah, Relena, that?s right. Well, um, yeah, I was just wondering?? Duo stammered. Damn it, since when was it so hard to ask such a simple question?
Heero lost his patience. He was already late for work. ?Just spit it out, Duo. What about Relena??
Biting his lip and praying that he?ll live to see the next sunrise, Duo took a deep breath and blasted his question at Heero. ?I-was-wondering-if-you-had-any-feelings-for-Relena-anymore-because-I-kinda-want-her-?
?Go ahead, Duo. I don?t care. Why did you even bother asking me?? Heero had felt his heart turn to stone when he heard what Duo had said. He reached for the disconnect button. ?Now, I have to go. I?m late for work.?
Duo pressed his nose against the screen, looking as if he were going to pass through it and land in Heero?s apartment. ?But wait! You didn?t even let me fin-?

As Heero walked down the hall, he heard the sound of his vidcom ringing again, but he ignored it this time. He?d have to change his number now. And when he heard the final trill fade into silence, Heero reflected on something strange. Somehow, the electronic trill had sounded a little more urgent than usual.
?Damn it, I can?t believe he cut me off like that! The nerve of that pilot ? I still don?t understand what ?Jousan sees in that guy.? Duo grumbled, giving up after his third try at calling again.
Standing up from his table, Duo looked at the now blank screen. ?Well, I guess I can proceed with a clear conscience then.?

Notes: I know what you're thinking: "Uh, Naus? The Alt. forum's thatta way..." But give it time, we'll see where I'm going with this. I don't even know exactly where I'm going with this.
This is actually one of my older fics - got good feedback elsewhere, so I'll see how it does here. Until next time, sweets.
