Night Two, Midnight
She blinked. Oh God.
?Relena?? Heero asked again, ?Who?s Jake??
Relena eyed her brother in desperation, but he just shook his head.
?Maybe I?d better take that now,? he said.
?But-? she didn?t get to finish her protest as Milliardo hauled the kitten away. Her one and only salvation. And he walked away with it.
Relena turned around slowly and readied herself for whatever expression Heero was wearing. When she saw his confused face she gave him a weak smile.
Here we go.
She took a deep breath, apparently bracing herself. For some reason, he felt the urge to do the same.
?Jake is a friend I met at the department store the other day,? she began, watching his face. After a few moments, He realized who she was talking about. That guy. His skin crawled. ?He showed up at the office today and invited me to a cup of coffee with him. You and I had just, um, emerged and I was a little miffed so I agreed. We went to a little caf? a few blocks away and ran into Quatre.?
She paused, obviously checking his reaction. It wasn?t a surprise to him that she would run into Quatre, but at a caf?? And what the hell was she doing with that guy?
She continued. ?While we were there, a bunch of the others showed up. Trowa, Livia, Nelana, Duo, Hilde. Eventually everyone was there, even my brother and Noin.? She paused again, taking several deep breaths. For some reason it felt like she was confessing. Was she? What had she done?
?What?d you do?? he asked, before he could stop himself.
She looked hurt. ?Nothing! I mean, not much?I mean, argh! Dammit Heero! It was supposed to be a surprise!?
He stared at her, shocked. Surprise? ?What are you talking about??
She closed her eyes and clenched her fists. ?The baby!? she nearly yelled, opening her eyes and throwing her hands in the air as if this was all blatantly obvious. ?The baby, the house. All of it! It was supposed to be a surprise. But, no. You have to go and get all possessive and try to have things your way-?
?Because you?re my wife!? he yelled back. They both stopped and stared at each other.
They?d never yelled like that before.
?I?m?I?m sorry,? she said quietly, ?I didn?t mean to yell.?
He nodded, unnerved.
They stared at each a few moments more before he finally asked, ?Will you please tell me what?s going on now??
She gazed at him with a small smile, then shook her head. ?You?re not going to like it,? she said, rubbing her forehead. He went over to her and cupped her face in his hands.
?There?s nothing about you I don?t like.?
She met his eyes and took yet another deep breath.
?It all started a few weeks ago??
?It?s done!? Duo exclaimed happily. He looked around at his friends and gave them his biggest grin. ?We have successfully built a house!?
?A perfect house,? Nelana chimed in, ?Complete with a brand new state-of-the-art security system.? She stared up at their creation.
All eight faces held the same expression. Pure awe.
?I can?t believe we really did it.?
?I can?t believe Heero fell for it!?
?I can?t believe Relena fell for it.?
?I can.?
?You don?t count!?
?What do you think they?re doing now??
Everyone stopped. All eyes turned to Livia.
?Probably just getting started,? she said with a grin.
Heero stared at his wife, unable to believe what he was hearing.
?It was all a set-up?? he asked incredulously.
Relena fidgeted. ?Well, sort of. I didn?t plan the Jake part.?
?But it was all still a set-up?? he asked again.
?Yes. It was.?
He sighed. ?Good.?
She blinked at him. ?What??
He pulled her into his arms and covered her lips with his, relief fueling his earlier passion. It was all a set-up. He couldn?t believe it. The past two days had all been planned by his wife to keep him away from their new house, her five-month anniversary present to him. It wasn?t the traditional present, but they were having a baby.
A baby.
In that moment it finally sunk in that he was going to be a father. He stopped kissing her and stared breathlessly at her face, his mind buzzing. A baby. A house. His life was about to change. Again.
?Relena,? he asked, ?What were the others doing during all of this??
She paused. ?I?don?t really know. They told me they were building the house for us these past two weeks, ever since I told them I was pregnant.?
?You told them before me??
She scoffed at him. ?Jealous??
He frowned at her. ?It?s hard not to be jealous with-? he looked her up and down, ?you.?
She grinned at him. ?You know,? she said, running her hands up his arms and clasping them behind his neck, ?The next time I get a bright idea about surprising you, I?m not doing it with you on the couch.?
The hairs on his neck stood up. ?What do you mean??
She leaned up and whispered into his ear. His body went tense.
?Can you really do that??
She winked at him. ?Watch me.?
He watched dazedly as she turned and ran up the stairs to go change. His head spun.
Damn he loved that woman.
