The Monastery

Disclaimer: I don’t own all these characters, well…maybe one or two, or more, but as for the rest of them, they belong to Bandai, Sunrise and Sotsu Agency. Don’t get me wrong, I am NOT looking for some kind of lawsuit just because I’m using the characters. Besides, such efforts are futile, because I am about as poor as a mouse (or poorer). Hey, you can’t squeeze blood from a turnip.

Chapter 2

Heero sat at his desk in his and his partner’s Preventers office. Nothing the braided joker could do or say would bring even the shadow of a smile onto Heero’s face.

‘Man Heero! Are you gonna stay this boring for the rest of your life?’

‘Yes,’ was his hollow reply.

‘But its been almost two years since, Relena died. Can’t you lighten up even a teeny-weenie-little bit?’ Duo made a tiny shape between his thumb and pointing finger to emphasize his point.

‘No.’

‘So now you’ve reduced to just ‘yes’ and ‘no’s’. This is definitely not good.’

‘So?’

‘At least that shows progress.’ Duo muttered under his breath, only to receive one of Heero’s infamous death glares.

Groaning noisily, Duo raised his arms above his head and dropped them sighing, ‘I give up!’

‘Good.’

They sat in complete silence after that. All that could be heard, was the sweet chirping of the birds perched outside the office on a large tree and the tapping of the keys as both Duo and Heero’s fingers flew over their keyboards.

Finally, Duo sprang up from his chair as if the most brilliant notion had just struck his mind.

‘I’m hungry. D’ya want anything?’

‘Coffee…please,’ Heero answered barely remembering to say please afterwards.

Duo just grinned remembering the days when Heero wouldn’t even say please or thank-you, not because he hadn’t been taught and didn’t know how; but because he just didn’t want to.

Duo left the room and quietly shut the door meanwhile pondering the events of the last two years. He remembered Relena just after the war. She always used to smile then, not that fake smile that never reached the eyes, that most politicians wore; but the genuine smile of a normal 17 year old. It was people like her that made Duo and the other Gundam pilots really love and respect her.

However, during the episodes leading up to the great explosion of the senate house; Relena had lost her fresh exterior, her whole outlook on life had narrowed down from what she’d said to him on the few occasions that they’d had to chat in the past.

But it was so hard to face the fact that he’d never see her again. That one of them, yes, she was like one of the Gundam Pilots in he way that she fought hard to obtain what she believed in; but it was so hard to believe that she, one of them, was…dead.

The truth was, he didn’t believe it. And he didn’t think that Heero did either. He didn’t know about the other G pilots, but Relena had always been close to Heero and him; ever since that time when he’d tried to save her from the latter, but she had defiantly refused his help to save Heero.

Duo smiled at the thought.

A few minutes later he arrived at the cafeteria. Duo was about to join the queue for coffee, when a hand tapped his shoulder. Spinning around, he saw an agitated Heero looking at him.

‘Heero!’ He exclaimed, ‘if you wanted your coffee so bad, you should have told me sooner, I’ve been in this queue for ages! I could have been eating by now…’

‘Shut-up! You talk too much.’ Heero dragged the protesting Duo over to an empty table saying, ‘I’ve got some important news to tell you.’

Sitting himself down in a comfortable position, Duo asked, ‘What news?’ He could see that this was extremely important, noting by the very anxious and serious expression on Heero’s face.

‘Relena’s not dead.’

A long line of people dressed in worn-out black rags walked down a corridor decorated in the gothic style of the 12th century. Bright narrow beams of light shone through the small high glassless windows at intervals.

Their leader wore a fiery red robe that looked fairly new. On his head was a triangular shaped hat that was perched to the left in a peculiar angle. He led them into a massive circular hall which they all but one, walked around three times; stopping at each turn.

The lone figure stood in the middle, in a circle sign that had a smaller shaded in circle at its centre. The figure was a skinny female with dazzling red hair that had streaks of a sandy colour at irregular interludes. She also had dark green eyes with light brown specks.

‘SILENCE!’ The leader shouted almost screamed. This was part of a ritual as there had been no sound before he had spoken.

‘Today is the day when Sanna becomes one of us. When she becomes a Soul-Searcher.’

His shrill voice penetrated the air. The ritual had begun. After almost two years of waiting, Sanna had finally reached the stage of soul-searching when she would become a fully- fledged Soul-Searcher.

‘Soooouuullllll-Sssseearrrcchherrr,’ the congregation answered with their title, dragging it, making it last for what seemed like hours.

The leader turned to face Sanna, his old and wizened face with its sunken, hollow eyes staring at her in that haunting way of his. This was the first time Sanna had seen him and would probably be the last. For his predicted death was in three months and if he didn’t naturally die by then, well…lets just say, he will die on the day meant for him.

Everyone had a predicted death, in which they absolutely must give up their bodies to Sear the ultimate Soul-Searcher, whom you only met in death, and join with his soul in ultimate bliss.

‘Sanna Soul-Searcher, do you believe the three Soul-Truths?’

No! ‘Yes.’ The traitorous thought had almost left her mouth and she’d had to breathe to stop it before loudly exclaiming the lie.

‘Sing them out, so that all, especially the Ultimate Soul-Searcher Sear, can hear you!’

Sanna sang, her golden, ringing voice cutting through the silence, if what she was saying hadn’t been such an ugly lie, her voice could have been considered as heavenly as an angel’s.

‘Sear is the Ultimate Soul-Searcher there is no one but him. We must strive to find our souls so that one day we can join our souls with his. I will not live past my predicted death otherwise known as Hirra.’

The congregation burst into a symphony of song. Everyone of them singing the Three Soul Truths.

Sanna glanced around the well-stocked hall. Her life was gone, her beloved family who she only just realised now that she missed, was gone. She might as well be a rotting carcass, because she had forsaken everything for a pack of the crazed beliefs of a deranged monastery in a colony gone wrong.

A/N: I hope that isn’t too short but you see, if I tried to write a long one right now, I probably wouldn’t even finish the story. So anyway, I hope you enjoyed it and the next chapter’s coming out soon. By the way do you like the phrase in my disclaimer, bloodthirsty isn’t it.

Despite the dire situation our lovely Relena is in, I feel no sympathy for her. I do, however, feel sympathy for that meddling Pilot 01. Poor baby! If I didn't have Trowa...scratch that. I wouldn't comfort him. I'd just nod politely while he didn't express himself.

For now, I shall forgive the short chappies (did I just write that word?) but I expect LONGER ones in the future Torn! I'm most interested in seeing Heero's reaction when he spies his beloved for the first time. And I'd really like to see what he does to this "monastery." *smirks*

Keep 'em coming!
