~~ A Room in the Conference Hall Complex ~~
?Wait a sec, let me get this straight, will ya? The lady who protects Lena?? Duo asked. He was dying to know why his pal from the past wars had told him to come to the conferences.
?Hn.?
?I?ll take that as a yes.? Duo ignored his former comrade-in-arms? deadpan behavior. ?Hiiro, you?re being paranoid! The chick?s been at that job for years!? Then a thought struck him. ?I thought Lena was your girlfriend, Hiiro! How come you?re checking out some other girl?? Another pause. ?Okay, so she?s hot, has a perfect body, has a nice pair of legs??
Glare.
Duo yelped, he going to end his life prematurely if he didn?t watch what he said. ?No, no, no, NO! That?s not what I meant! I am not and was not checking out Lena! I was talking about the chick that protects her! Honest!?
Hiiro said nothing; he had no need to. Count on Maxwell to gawk and drool at the girls before paying attention to the task at hand. ?Maxwell no baka??
<Who?s your friend?> asked a feminine voice from somewhere in the room.
Duo whirled around, his gun drawn. ?Who?s there??
Hiiro?s eyes narrowed. <Why have you left Relena, Yamasaki?>
<A former comrade of yours is watching her.> Then her tone altered entirely. <Relena?s in danger.>
?Hn. Ninmu ryoukai.?
?Quit speaking Japanese, will ya? It isn?t fair!? Duo complained, ?I can?t understand a thing you?re saying!?
A comlink sounded, and a click was heard. ?Retribution here,? the woman said automatically.
[Woman!] came a loud, angry, Chinese voice. It was none other than Chang Wufei a.k.a. Preventer Dragon. [Where the hell are you?! You?re Vice Foreign Minister Darlian?s personal bodyguard!]
[Around. I?ve got some reinforcements with me,] she replied, ignoring Wufei.
[What reinforcements?!] he demanded.
[Old friends of yours,] she replied. ?Retribution out.?
[Woman! What the hell do you-] Then the comlink was abruptly cut off.
Midori Yamasaki stepped out of the shadows for the very first time. ?Hello, Shinigami.?
?What?how?how much did you hear?? Duo stuttered out in shock.
?We?re wasting time here; I?ll explain everything later.?
?Hiiro?? Duo turned around and was met with?a wall and no Hiiro. He grinned, ?Well, whadda ya know? He?s already gone.?
She had known that Hiiro had left the moment she said Relena was in danger, and there was no need to stay. ?Ikimasu.?
He blinked several times. ?What d-?
Midori sprinted out the door, leaving a very confused Shinigami behind. Having to decide between staying and becoming completely ignorant to the events outside or to run after her to see what the hell was going on, Duo choose the latter and chased after her. He had a bad feeling about this?
~~ The Room Adjoining the Conference Hall ~~
?Damn it!? Wufei yelled, nearly throwing his comlink to floor in frustration. ?I ought to get that woman fired for pulling those stunts of hers!?
?Wufei!? Sally Po a.k.a. Preventer Water, admonished, ?She knows what she?s doing! She would never let us down!? She glanced nervously at the long oval table where the government officials of the Earth Unified Nation sat. ?And keep it down! You?ll get us in trouble for disrupting the conference!?
He glared at her for interrupting, but fell silent as advised. Disobeying orders was something he couldn?t risk at the moment. This conference was concerned the Mars Terraforming Project. Preventers Wind and Fire had chosen to go to Mars to help speed the project along four years ago, but it would still take years to be completed.
The door to the room creaked open and Midori stepped in. [Sorry for taking so long.]
[You?re-] the Solitary Dragon began.
SLAM!! Midori was unceremoniously shoved farther into the room by a fast moving, black and brown blur.
[-Late.] He finished, staring at the sudden shifting of positions.
?Duo! This is a pleasant surprise,? Sally remarked.
?Woman!? Wufei demanded. ?Exactly why you were late? The conference has been in session for ten minutes already!?
Midori flicked back a strand of hair that had gotten loose from the low ponytail at the back of her head. She didn?t bother to hide her vexation when she replied. ?I left Vice Foreign Minister Darlian under your charge because I spotted an irregularity among the people in the complex. How often does one see a man with a meter long braid under normal circumstances, Long??
?Hey! What?s that supposed to mean?!? came the indignant cry from the braided pilot.
Wufei scowled darkly. ?Woman, you court danger far too readily.?
?And you presume too easily,? she snapped back irately. ?Cut to the chase and explain the situation. We are wasting time.?
?Sheesh, what?s got her so worked up?? Duo whispered to Sally as he watched Midori and Wufei begin the semblance of an argument.
?She?s extremely protective of Miss Relena.?
?Kinda like Hiiro?? Duo asked with a sly grin. Blackmail time?
?Now, now, Duo,? Sally chastened, ?Don?t go bugging Hiiro about Relena. The two will sort things out in time. Midori?s protectiveness for Miss Relena is more like what one has for a younger sibling.?
Duo made a face. ?Knowing Perfect Soldier boy, he isn?t gonna say anythin? even if his life depended on it!?
?That isn?t fair!? Midori protested, having ended her argument early enough to listen in on the last of what was being said. ?People change over time!?
?And who are you to judge that?? Duo retorted.
?I-? she chopped her reply short as her hand flew to the handgun at her waist. ?Shimatta.?
Sally knew her well enough to know that something was amiss. [What?s wrong?]
?Sniper,? She tersely replied, ?In the conference room. The intelligence reports I received said that there would be a sniper here. Today.?
Everyone in the room stopped moving.
?Damn.?
?I second that.? Duo agreed, also bringing out his gun from the inside of his jacket. ?Never hurts to have one around,? he explained when he was given surprised looks.
Midori shrugged off the explanation, merely concentrating on the immediate threat. ?Permission to lead?? she queried.
?Granted.? Sally replied; she knew that Midori had the skills to pull this off.
?Injustice!?
Midori fixed a pair of very intent eyes on the Chinese man. ?To refresh your memory,? she began, ?I outrank you. If you have any objections with my leading the team, I will have no second thoughts of pulling you out. Is that clear??
Wufei stiffened; she had hit his weak spot. ?Understood.?
Duo opened his mouth to make a smart-ass comment, but the glance that Midori sent him told him to let it go. Discord would only hamper their mission and weaken their chances of success. It was similar to any other mission that he had taken upon. ?So, what do we do??
?Enter the room unseen. Remain in the shadows and keep a lookout for anything unusual.? She tossed Duo a spare comlink. ?Use the color-coded buttons on your comlink to signal your progress. Blue means nothing unusual has been sighted, green means sniper spotted, and red means the sniper is about to make a move. Understood??
?Ryoukai,? Duo replied automatically, followed by a unison reply of ?understood? from Wufei and Sally.
Midori raised an eyebrow but didn?t comment on his rather odd response. Instead, she continued on with her plan. ?I?ll go back to into the conference room. Use the distraction of me entering the room to station yourselves.?
?Got it, babe.?
?Understood.?
Midori paused right when she was about open the door. ?Don?t call me that, Maxwell.? And before he could react, she slipped into the adjoining room.
?My name is DUO!? He spun in frustration to face Wufei. ?You taught her that, didn?t you?!?
Wufei fought the urge to smirk. ?Of course not?Maxwell.?
~~ Conference Room ~~
The sound of a door opening captured the attention of almost every person inside, and heads swiveled to scrutinize the newest person in the room. Duo, Wufei, and Sally slipped into the room unnoticed by everyone.
Midori inclined her head at the occupants of the table in a single smooth motion. ?I?m just returning from a debriefing. Please continue, gentlemen,? she glanced at Relena with a gentle smile. ?And lady.? Then fully intending to claim her rightful spot beside her charge, she placed her gaze to the right of Relena only discover that someone else was in her chair! A very interesting someone at that?
The ?thief? glanced up from his laptop, his mop of unruly chocolate brown hair falling forward to obscure his intense Prussian blue eyes. ?Hn. Long debriefing??
?Hai,? Then she saw what she had been looking for. ?Damn. I was hoping to buy more time?? Her hand flew to her comlink?and her finger hit the red button. Then wasting no time, she caught Hiiro?s gaze, her eyes speaking multitudes.
A shot was fired?
A searing, burning pain nearly caused a savior to fall?
The world turned *crimson*?
And time seemed to slow down?
~~ TBC ~~
Just so you know, I'm assuming that Sally can speak at least one dialect of Chinese because she had lived in China before joining the Alliance military way back when.
