Geppetto Chapter 3 - Read and Review!!!! Please :D

Eventual romance, action, and now to shed some light on our mystery :eek:

Sally set up her instruments meticulously. She had arrived at her lab two hours early. Having finished her fourth read of Une?s directives the butterflies in her stomach were an unnecessary reminder that her team would start their investigation today. She was still uncomfortable with Une?s insistence that another Preventer join their team. ?At least I?m still the ranking officer here? this is my mission.?

?You?re late,? Sally began, earning herself a glare from at least one of the young men.
?Chang you will assist our new member ? whenever they decide to turn up?? she said, with perhaps a bit too much bitterness. ??In deciphering the computer data we?ve collected. And?,? she turned to the taller man who was already making himself comfortable leaning against the large medical table in the back of the room, ??please examine the machine itself. I would like a full diagnostic report on how it works and if you can figure it out, exactly what it is doing. Be careful not to disrupt the ?passenger inside?? her voice trailed off into a whisper as her eyes followed the movement of the man who had just entered the room.
?Preventer Night here as requested by Director Une.?

~~~Flashback~~~
?Computers are not your specialty Sally??
?Dir., I know we can do this.?
?Perhaps you can, but to assure so I?m assigning you another agent, one whose abilities I?m sure you are familiar with?
Sally?s eyes widened in shock, ?Four agents on one assignment, that?s almost unheard of???
?So long as neither of my partners are reassigned for a rookie, that?s fine?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

?Good to have you join us,? Sally crossed her arms and smiled. ?A rookie, Une must have been laughing at me, I should have known.? The other two men having already begun their assigned tasks merely looked up and nodded. ?So,? Sally thought ?where you been keeping yourself Heero.?

Sally hardly had to time to think about her question, let alone look for answers. The first two weeks of work were busy. Sally quickly learned that all her conventional instruments were completely useless and could only determine what she had already assumed, that the girl inside was alive. So for the last month she had been revising them. As she would fuse wires together the taller man would lean over to inspect her work and she frequently adjusted her new designs based on the data he provided. To her amusement this close contact provided her with more than a few grim looking glances from Wu-Fei.

It had been a rough six weeks of deciphering half-sentences and personal excerpts before Sally was finally able to corner the elusive pilot. ?Aha, he?s alone? let?s see how good he is?? Sally mischievously crept her way into the room. Noticing her firends skulking around in the back of the room she silently pleaded with them for some time alone with the elusive pilot. Blackrose and KMF gave her a knowing glance before packing up and silently exiting the room. Holding her breath as she went she hoped the rhythmic sounds of another late night working would be enough to cover up any noise.

A small computer lit up the dim lunchroom making the typists face look sallow and ill. Not that the typist cared he didn?t even much care about the assignment he was working so diligently on. ?Boring, monotonous work? he thought, ?I?ll get it done and be transferred back to security, at least there something new might happen? He thought back on the many assassination attempts he had foiled in the past three years ?Not too much excitement left in this world. Just the way it should be, and I?ll keep it that way once this favor is done.?

He snapped his eyes open and momentarily froze ?someone?s there, footsteps trying to be light, scent ? not food ? it can?t be Duo? close now!? Spinning around he aimed his gun to the shadows. ?The click of a heel. Hn.?. He turned back to his work placing his unloaded gun on the right ?within reach? he noted.

?Did you know it was me all along or? am I getting better? a grinning face leaned into his line of sight. ?Well Heero??
?Hn.? He shut his computer down and looked around for a quick escape, ?...balcony....need air? he knew what was to come, ?the drill, the same thing everyone wants to know, I suppose it amuses them?.

?So how long have you been a Preventer??
?Four years?
?Based in???
?Sanc?
?Oh?
-silence-
?Do you enjoy it ? work I mean?
????yes?
?Seen Releena??
?Occasionally?
?And how are things?? Sally averted her gaze attempting to ease the tension.
Trying to look occupied by a sign advertising a sale, she hoped Heero wouldn?t see her smile. He did.
?What do you want from your future Heero??
?Everyday I try to figure that out."
?I?m glad you?re helping us out?"

Heero merely nodded as he closed the gap between them and sat next to her on the balcony railing, slightly surprising Sally.

?Ummm? do you have any theories yet??
?Yes? your right?
?Makes thing more complicated?
?Not for me ? I?m just decoding data?
?And then???

Heero hopped off the balcony rail. Sally thought he was ignoring the last question as he headed back to work. That was far from the truth, his mind chanting ?and then?and then?and then??, his eyes opened wide as warm feelings and vivid memories overwhelmed him ?I go home?. The familiar image of Releena, looking slightly too thin and pale, as she raised her head from behind a stack a papers and smiled. When he strove to be a shadow watching over her that smile always made him feel like more. The smile she saved for him as she greeted him. It was a brief allowed distraction. By the time he picked his computer and gun up from the empty cafeteria it was gone.

?Daydreaming, I never used to daydream before I met her. Why now?? Unable to come up with a better reason he chalked it up to exhaustion and over work and decided to head back to his room for a few hours sleep before dawn.

Wu-Fei thumbed through Sally finished draft of the weekly project report. He shook his head in disgust ?paperwork nonsense, waste of time?. With the negligible amount of progress the group was making he was not the only one who said it seemed futile to continue doing these weekly summaries. He tossed aside his glasses and rubbed his temples forcing his eyes to focus on Sally?s words. It had been years since he behaved so rudely to Sally. It took him a long time to realize just how strong she really was and how much he respected her abilities, and even enjoyed working with her.

'I have work to do, the more Preventer Night reconstructs the more there is to go through? He grabbed the report and began the short walk back to his office. Pressing the correct buttons on the elevator he leaned back, relishing the coolness of the silver railing in his hand. Night?s perpetual silence made him wonder just how little Heero seemed to have changed in these last six years.

?We all need to learn from our past and grow? he mumbled, his mind traveling back to the battlefield and their final battle, his final battle. Heero?s words which only served to confuse him at the time saved him. As much as his victory felt empty to his pride, it meant a debt of honor to his soul. ?Yes, he helped steer me on this path, one day I would like to repay my debt. In fact I would be honored if he would let me?.

Sally never left the building, only catching an hour of involuntary sleep in her lab. Picking up her latest modification Sally scanned the girl again.
?Eve when will you let us know your little secrets?? Sally said with an amused tone, her face mimicking an angry parent. She soon remembered she wasn?t alone in there.

The man who had been silently working around the back of the machine looked up out of the corner of one eye. ?Eve?? Returning his eyes to his work he waited for her reply.

?The first woman, Eve? look I know it?s not her name so don?t smirk at me like that, you think I didn?t notice??

Turning back to her instruments she continued? ?I have to call her something. ?Girl? just doesn?t work for me anymore. After all this time together and everything?.?her voice trailed off, he wasn?t listening anymore. He found something more interesting.

?What is it??
?There?s writing here? he pulled out a flashlight to show her as she leaned in.
?I can?t make heads or tails out of it; it?s nothing I?ve seen before.? Sally shook her head as she knelt down closer. Just then Wu-Fei came in.
?Onna! What are you doing with him!?
?Shut up, get over here, and look at this! Mind in the gutter you men? she backed off to give Wu-Fei room to see.
?Mmm writing, I have seen this before? he reached his hand out to touch the script. ?Where have I seen this before, it reads the other way I remember that much, what does it say?? His mind raced through several possible translations. He had studied various languages under the tutelage of his old master.

Meanwhile the man with the flashlight wanted to see more for himself. ?There?s a lever here as well,? he said while pushing only so slightly to see if it would give... Unfortunately that?s? just what it did do, give.

He jumped back, noticing Sally do the same, as he heard mechanisms inside spring to life. Vapor came gushing out of the front of the machine obscuring their view. Alarmed Sally lurched forward and grabbed Wu-Fei shoving him behind her.

?I almost had it, what are you doing to me, so its steam don?t? be foolish?

He knelt back down again disappearing from her vision briefly, before she heard him cry ?Of course,? followed by a few mumbles then ?stupid machine, it?s in English? good going? he said snidely as he walked over to Sally. ?You better get ready it said ?emergency exit??

**********

Nadja Edwards looked more like the rag dolls left in the rubble of the crumbling buildings of her home town than the porcelain dolls in the shop her mother once told her she resembled. But she knew that. In fact at first all she knew were the bruises, burns and broken bones that that covered her body. Struggling to open her eyes, she forced herself to ignore it, to ignore the pain pulsing through her. It was something she was good at, blocking things out, but it took concentration and she couldn?t concentrate when there were so many voices shouting.

?Voices?. Like a bolt of lightening shocking her mind alive again she forgot all else and listened.

**********

?We need to prepare?
?Prepare for what??
?I don?t know exactly, but incase that does what I think it?s going to do, Heero!?
?Hn, I?ll let the Director know of this situation?

**********

The thick glass protecting her from the outside elements was also distorting the voices, but she could make one thing out clearly, she had no idea what they were saying! ?What?s going on? This is not right, these are not the people from the lab, have I been captured? Who are they, what did they do with the others, are they here too? They could be the enemy. Be careful.?

Balancing her weight on her right leg she reached up on her toes trying to hit the secondary release lever inside. Her limp left arm threw off her balance before she could activate the door. Staring at it with disgust she batted it away and tried again.

The door unlocked and after pushing it slightly she could clearly hear the voices around her.

?I?ll alert the infirmary they may have a new patient?
?If that?s the case I?ll handle her care myself?

Nadja growled deeply at the three strangers in her line of sight. ?They are not here, where are they!' Balancing again, she stretched down slowly and withdrew a gun from a bag behind her. ?They will not capture me.? Slowly and with care she edged the thick glass open enough for her to pass by silently. The three strangers, she observed, were too wrapped up in themselves to notice her.

?Perfect and if I have to I?ll take them all hostage?. Pacing herself she crept behind the now empty machine. Her breathing quickly became ragged and she was already exhausted. ?Ignore.? Wiping her brow she leveling her gun to take aim.

This is a very original idea, in my opinion. I loved it all! When whilst thou write another? *taps foot impatiently* I'm not a very patient woman, so if I were you, I'd hurry up. Now would be a good time to finish. I loved it! I can't wait to see what happens to her.....Oh.....Or them, for that matter. I also love and appreciate how you're keeping everything in character....well....mostly, anyway. :wink: I love it! Keep it up!

Aku! I finally had a chance to catch up! Phew, and what a suspenseful chapter it was!

I'm going to agree with KMF and smack Heero for not realizing he's smitten. But huzzah for daydreaming. :)

And, LOL, cute - them not knowing English. Ha. Very inventive.

I'm anxious to find out just who this girl is. And whom she's looking for. And I hope she doesn't think she can get the drop on Heero. LOL Won't happen. ;)

*hugs* YAY!!!

Love,
Rose <--who's off to ch 4
