Chapter 6 - Private Conversation

Upon entering the room, tears cascaded down Relena?s cheeks but then disregarded them as she immediately grabbed her duffel bag and placed all the things that she will need in her endless journey. There?s no time to waste now because by tomorrow, she will be leading a new life in prison. Plain shirts, blouses and pants were carelessly stuffed inside the black bag when suddenly something on top of the night table caught her eye. She gently stood up from where she was seated on the floor and quietly made her way to the desk as if scared to awaken its occupant. When she had already reached her destination, she slightly stopped from her tracks to touch the soft brown fur of the bear. She chuckled a little and said to herself while reminiscing the good memories of yesteryears. ?You remind me so much of Heero. Those same brown hair and Prussian blue eyes.? Heero gave that bear to her on her fifteenth birthday. From then on, she cherished it as if it were the most important treasure in the whole world. She picked it up and cradled it in her arms lovingly; she then squeezed the bear to hug it tighter, imagining that it was him instead of a lifeless piece of fur. A noise coming from the door startled Relena out of her reverie; she accidentally dropped the bear on the floor and then turned around to face the intruder.

?Mr. Donenfeld, how ?? Relena gasped when she saw who it was. The person was the least expected. ?Heero! Umm? do I owe you anything to pay me a visit this late at night?? She asked trying to sound casual.

?Mr. Donenfeld? Why? Do you expect him to visit you inside your room?? Heero asked a little bit jealous but tried to hide it behind his mask and monotone voice. As far as he knew, he was the only one to enter her room even without her permission.

?No!? Relena said defensively while bending down to pick up the bear lying on the floor trying to cover her nervousness. Relena swallowed hard and explained agitatedly. ?I thought that it was him? umm? because ? we have some? agreement, uh I mean? negotiations to finish about the case. That?s all.? Almost every word she said faltered and that made Heero suspect that something?s not right.

?Something?s wrong. Tell me.? He again asked in a commanding character.

?Nothing?s wrong Heero. What made you think that way?? She retorted while turning away from him to continue packing her things.

?I?m not stupid. It?s obvious.?

?The only thing that?s wrong is you being here. So, what brought you here anyway?? She asked changing the topic.

Heero hadn?t notice the sudden change of their conversation. He didn?t even say anything to answer her question either; he just looked back at her in a trance-like state. After all, Relena?s a politician; she?s always the expert when to it comes to talking.

Upon hearing no reply from the other, she angrily and presumably replied, ?If you?re going to convince me to come with you in colony L1, I?m sorry to disappoint you but I?m not going.?

?You have no other choice. You?ll conform with our plan whether you like it or not.? Heero roughly grabbed her by the arm as he almost dragged her out of the room. Heero?s heart almost palpitated at the slight contact on her smooth skin but then, he put his perfect soldier mode back and ignored the feeling.

?Heero, release my arm right now. You?re hurting me!? She shouted while trying to get away from his vice-like grip.

He finally freed her upon noticing red handprints marked on her right arm. ?You have to. They don?t want you to die.? He explained in a flat voice and glared at her way.

?They? Don?t you even care a little about me by saying, WE don?t want you to die.? Relena asked in a low voice while her eyelids almost overflowed with tears.

?Don?t start up a fight. That?s not my concern as of now.?

?Yes, I can indeed see that. I?m none of your concern anyway, so why don?t you just leave and let me be.? Relena bit her lower lip and then continued her ranting as a tear rolled down her cheeks followed by another and then another. ?You weren?t there during the time I need you most and then now, you?ll come here to just drag me forcefully out of my room to follow your selfish plan. I?m not your slave, Heero. I do love you but that doesn?t mean that I have to follow your every orders.? She covered her mouth when she realized that she had slipped and gave away her obvious secret. ?Uh? sorry, I? uh, didn?t mean to say that.? In order to conceal her humiliation, she bowed her head down and wiped her teary eyes.

?I do love you but?? Her words were all echoing through his mind and were mocking him to admit the same feelings to her. Heero was at loss for words upon hearing Relena confess her very feeling and then finally decided to say; ?I don?t love you and don?t expect me to return the same feelings to you either. All I want is to accomplish my??

Upon hearing his harsh words, Relena?s heart felt as if it were squeezed and were drained out of blood. Nevertheless, she instead mustered all the courage left within her and finished the sentence for him, ?Mission. Is that all I ever was to you? Don?t you even consider me as your friend?? She asked as a new tear started to form around her puffy eyes. She had already bore her soul to him but he still chose to push her away like that. The truth hurts, however she could do nothing but to accept it.

?Damn it! Stop acting like a child. You know, I hate weaklings. I thought you were damn strong but now I know that you?re just pretending to be because you?re not. Why don?t you just comply with us, with your brother? So that once and for all, we?ll all be able to get out of this fucking mess, which you have started.?

?Pretending? Is that how you can describe my actions? You?re right! Heero, all my life I have been pretending? pretending to be happy when I?m really not, pretending to smile sweetly in every politician I encounter during a grand ball or whatsoever, pretending that I?m not a little girl anymore, who wishes to live a normal life, pretending that I really don?t miss my father, pretending that I am not lonely. I?m sick and tired of pretending Heero!? Relena?s words almost wavered as she continued to sob helplessly on the carpeted floor, not even minding that she was now a total mess.

?That?s beside my point, you know that your life?s in danger. Be open-minded Relena, some people are really destined to sacrifice their own happiness for the betterment of this world. You?re not the only one who?s suffering. So, quit your self-pitying Relena because that won?t get you anywhere.? Heero said as he paced back and forth while rubbing his temples in utter irritation. ?Let?s just stop this bullshit.?

?You don?t understand. If you only knew what I?ve been going through right now, you?ll be able to comprehend.?

?Then, tell me what I don?t understand.? Heero flatly stated while running his fingers roughly along his brown tresses trying to control his rising temper.

Relena didn?t say any reply, which made Heero?s blood boil even more. ?Fuck. You. Don?t be a selfish pathetic bitch. Just concur with our plan. This is the best thing to do. Think of your brother, what would he think if you?ll just reject this plan, which he had thought of??

?No. There are some things that cannot be explained. My answer?s plain and simple, I just can?t.?

?Fine, be as stubborn as ever but don?t expect me to come here again to persuade you with our plan. I?ve had enough of your babbling mouth. I hate you. You?re better off dead.? Heero said and were almost behind the door when she called out.

?Heero, I?? She hesitated while trying to explain. ?I hate you. You?re better off dead.? His words were all coming back to her and were exploding inside her eardrums like firecrackers. Relena covered her ears with trembling hands while tears streamed down her face. Her breath was ragged as she tried to hold her chest to gasp for more air.

?Just shut your fucking mouth Relena and listen to what I?m about to say. At this time, emotions should be disregarded. You know that emotions won?t get anyone anywhere. Now, this is the last time I?m to ask you this. Are you going to come with me or not?? Heero asked through clenched teeth. It was very evident from his eyes that he is not pleased with how things were turning and Relena?s stubbornness had already drained his patience.

Relena paused for a while to think and then almost regretfully answered, ?I can?t, and I hope you?ll understand.?

Heero just shrugged his head in disappointment at Relena?s answer and brusquely left the room.

The princess just stared at his retreating back and then found herself crying even more as she took hold of the banister for support. She sat on her bed and cried all her heart out. Heero had never cursed her but this moment was the exception. Almost all dire words have been said right at her face. ?Heero, please understand. I?m doing this for you because I love you that I?m willing to sacrifice my own happiness for your future.? She managed to whisper as tears rolled down her rosy cheeks from crying and soon drifted off to unconsciousness.

*****

?Damn it! Why does she have to be always stubborn? Heero strode down the hall and out of the Peacecraft mansion to go back to Colony L1 while his mind?s full of unnecessary thoughts.
