I'm completely rewriting chapter 3 (yes, it sucked that badly), so it might take a while before I post that part.

WORTH A LIFETIME
CHAPTER 2 - REGRET
?Hn.? Heero Yuy lunged at the poor alarm clock the minute it started to inform him of the time. The device ended up flying across the room, colliding with the concrete wall where it found its last breath. The soldier grunted, throwing his head back into the pillow. ?Great.? he muttered quietly. This would be another morning that just didn?t get off right. He reached for his head, massaging his temples. It was hard trying to calm down. He didn?t even know what he was so fussed about this time.
A normal human being would?ve stayed where he was. Clinging to the warmth of the bed as long as possible. One would usually postpone daytime by pulling the covers closer and doing everything it takes not to break the warm cocoon he was in. But Heero wasn?t quite human. He removed the sheets from his toned body. Several scars were visible on his skin. Some of them still ached when he made a certain movement. Even after five years, several injuries reminded him of his former ?profession?. He had hoped these marks would scare off people. He hated socializing.
When he was fighting, completing secret missions, he was supposed not to let anyone know about him. Those days seemed to be so much easier. Now that there was no reason to battle, he had to find a new way of living. Unfortunately that meant talking to people. Blending in with the crowd and crowds were not his thing. At least he would?ve wished the women would leave him alone. However no woman seemed to be able to walk past him without goggling. He hated it when that happened. Women were a distraction, he had decided. One had been enough to mess him up thoroughly. He could not let that happen again. At that he pondered for a moment. Yes, he was sure he had dreamt about her again. Dreams, he thought sadly, could not be controlled. Devilish creature. She had taken hold of his unconsciousness. Maybe he should try not to sleep at all. Unfortunately he was still ? partly ? human and forcing himself to stay awake would fail eventually. True, he would last longer than most but inevitably his body would take over.
Ruffling his wild untamed hair he made his way to the bathroom. Only a shower could lighten up his mood. He wondered when he got these morning tempers anyway. Quite a few years now, he presumed. Maybe ever since the day he left? her? No, he shrugged that thought off. That could never be the reason. She would never have this effect on him, anymore. Well he always seemed to be in a temper to those around them, so no one would notice. He however, felt the change. Something was angering him. As if something about his life was really wrong. Control yourself, he thought. He could not afford loosing himself to an emotion as anger or regret. Regret, he sneered angrily. No, he couldn?t regret leaving her, could he?
Silently fuming, he grabbed the remnants of the damaged clock and tossed them on the bed next to it. He would fix it later, when he didn?t feel like attacking the thing even more. An annoyed whine had come in response when the clock hit the bed and the mattress creaked when the person inside it turned around, away from the object that had just bumped into him.
?Wake up, we?ve got work to do.?. Heero gave the sleeping beauty a hard poke in the ribcage. More moans were thrown at him. The person in the bed cursed under his breath, pulling the covers over his head. ?Leave me be Heero. I?ll be up in five?. Heero cocked an eyebrow. He really wanted to be in the shower right now, getting rid of all this grumpiness. However if his roommate decided to be difficult, he could just work it out on him. At least the clock was safe now.
His hands took hold of the side of the bed and rolled the mattress over. Duo yelped helplessly and grunted as the coldness of the floor greeted him. ?Five minutes could mean the difference between life and death.? the soldier stated as a matter of factly. The poor man on the floor stumbled to his feet, glaring at his roommate. ?Give me a break, there hasn?t been a war for 4 years.? Of course Duo knew that Heero had always had troubles with accepting the fact his skills in combat were no longer needed. He couldn?t blame the soldier. He had known nothing else but to fight. It was all he had been trained for. It was his niche. And now Heero seemed like a fish on dry land. A situation that would slowly be his death. Duo curiously took a look at what had woken him. The scraps of metal lying hopelessly on his bed, made him shake his head in disapproval. ?What the hell happened to the clock?? Duo asked slowly. He had lost count of the objects Heero had broken in the past few years. ?It annoyed me.? was the answer. His voice as monotone as ever. This bleakness used to give Duo a whiplash but he had gotten used to it. Heero went into the bathroom leaving a slightly irritated Duo behind. He was growing tired of his roommate?s behavior. He seemed to be getting less tolerable by the day. Naturally Heero had never been the most cheerful person to live with. But it was getting worse. As if he was growing? depressed? He chuckled at the thought. Surely that would be the last thing that could happen to his friend, right?
After all, he reminded himself, Heero was a man to be feared. Emotions were not an option for the soldier. And that is what made him the perfect weapon. He hoped, for Heero?s sake, and it sounded a bit radical, that war would start over again. At least he would return to his normal self. Weird and murderous as ever, of course. But he would be happy, in his own way. Lousily, he opened the blinds of the single window in their apartment and decided to make some coffee to get rid of the sleepiness. Yes, coffee was a good idea. Coffee might cheer Heero up slightly as well, which was a good thing for all mankind.
Next to the coffee machine lay the remote control, as always. Duo switched on the small TV and as the sound of morning?s newsflashes invaded his drowsy trance he moved to get some cups. From the bathroom, water was starting to run and he suddenly remembered something very important, unprotected in the shower. The damn thing was expensive enough already. His hair relied on it and obviously his hair was his pride. ?Heero, this time please stay off that shampoo, my hair dresser said it w?? He trailed off, not being sure he should mention things as having a personal hairdresser to someone like Heero. ?Don?t worry Duo.? A faint voice called out from behind the door. ?The last thing I need is a lavender smell.? It sounded like mocking and Duo presumed it was. ?I wouldn?t have used it in the first place if I had known.? Heero added.
The ex-pilot turned off the water. The shower had helped him slightly, he noticed. The moisture ran off his chest, wetting the tiled floor as he reached for a towel. He had to admit, he thought as he toweled his hair dry, that Duo?s shampoo had loosened the knots in his hair last time. He never combed it anyway, it just fell into place eventually. The same wild mess every single time. It was easy and he wasn?t much into grooming anyway. He dried the rest of his body, tossing the towel into the basket in the corner. Later that day, he would have to do laundry, he thought sadly. He?d rather have broken into a military base and stolen a shuttle. To any degree, those things were unfortunately behind him. Now he was a simple mechanic, working at the closest garage in this colony. It was the best fitting work for him. Duo and him knew enough to fix the hardest things and improve them on top of that. The boss was happy, they were happy to some extent (mostly Duo) and they were able to survive on their paycheck. Plus he didn?t need to talk much, which resulted into him being practically unknown here. Something he appreciated.
?Duo can you stop by the stock to fetch those cylinders we needed?? They had recently been working on an old racecar. It had caught Heero?s attention. Fixing a beauty like that was like working on his Gundam. He had got it working in no time and it was time to improve the car now. It had cost him quite a lot, but he had added a V12 engine. If he got the parts he wanted, the car would be able to reach 336 horsepower. He couldn?t wait to rev that engine. However he suddenly noticed his long-braided friend had not responded. ?Duo?? he questioned, narrowing his eyes. He pulled on his jeans and walked to the door, calculating the possibility that someone had broken into their apartment and knocked him out. They still had enemies, right?
?Heero, get over here!? Duo called back. So nothing had happened to him then. No one had broken in. He noticed the slight disappointment washing over him. Funny, he thought, how he had hoped Duo would?ve been hurt by someone. He sheepishly noted how badly he wanted to fight again. ?Heero!?? his friend yelled a little more pressing. He had to admit Duo sounded serious and curiosity got the better of him. The minute he opened the door, the TV blurred into his ears.
?? butler found her room empty and in a mess. The possibility that Relena Peacecraft has been kidnapped is not ungrounded. What concerns the security most of all??. Heero did not hear what was said after. He drew a long sigh and went to the counter to get some coffee. Duo watched him closely, somewhat disturbed by the way he was acting. The news ended and he turned down the volume, waiting for Heero to respond. He had to say something.
The soldier took a sip from his cup and chuckled lightly, as if amused by the bad news. ?Why does she keep getting herself into trouble and expect me to save her?? he murmured looking at nothing in particular before him. Maybe because he would save her? That was certain. He?d do anything it would take to find her. At that, he smiled miserably. He had been fooling himself. It had never been mind over matter with Relena. He couldn?t forget her. It had taken him much effort not to return to Earth in the past five years. So he had started lying to himself, convinced that she was in the past. Duo frowned at him. Heero knew his friend hadn?t believed him. He never had.
The soldier was having a hard time. His heart was screaming at him to go and find her immediately. He tried to calm himself but that familiar knot in his stomach tightened, a feeling he hadn?t had for quite a long time. Nothing had happened to her for so long and he had actually started to believe pacifism was achievable. But he was proven wrong now, there was still someone in this world that couldn?t stand the nonviolent situation Relena had created. Something was wrong, he felt it. It was gnawing in the back of his head, alarming him immensely. Something well-known awoke in him. The feeling that fit him so well, which he had missed in those peaceful years.
A mission. The protective swelling in his chest rose when he thought of the task?s object. ?I need to get to Earth.? he informed Duo. The look that met him, told him his roommate had agreed on that a long time ago.
